I would like to thank all the EIOS members who returned their questionnaires. 21 out of 32 were returned and tabulated which is great for a questionnaire study. The majority of club members want to continue our meetings at the Presbyterian Church on Rochester Street in Iowa City on Tuesday evenings as is currently done. SO BE IT! Our members grow many types of orchids with Paphiopedilums and Phalaenopsis leading in numbers. There is a wide range in number of orchids grown from 10 to over 800 per member. Location of growing areas vary with the basement being the most common followed by a plant room. Growing under florescent lights was common (Continued on page 6) Calendar of Events EIOS Meeting, 6:30 Social, Meeting at 7:00 pm, First Presbyterian Church, 2701 Rochester Ave, Iowa City, IA Illinois Orchid Society's "Fall Orchid Odyssey" Chicago Botanic Gardens, Lake Cook Rd., Glencoe, Il Second Annual Eastern Iowa Orchid Show and Sale Noelridge Park Greenhouse, 4900 Council Street NE, Cedar Rapids, Iowa EIOS Meeting, 6:30 Social, Meeting at 7:00 pm, First Presbyterian Church, 2701 Rochester Ave, Iowa City, IA EIOS Holiday Party, Details TBA First Presbyterian Church, 2701 Rochester Ave, Iowa City, IA Orchid Society of Minnesota "40th Anniversary" Winter Carnival Orchid Show, Marjorie McNeely Conservatory, 1225 Estabrook Drive, St. Paul, MN 10/01/13 10/12/13-10/13/13 10/19/13-10/20/13 11/05/13 12/03/13 01/25/14-01/26/14

Page 2 September 2013 Meeting Club President Lois Dusdieker said that she will review the questionnaires sent to members this summer and will use the results to pick the future meeting day and time, as well as set topics for 2013-2014 meetings. We discussed changes to the raffle. Members are welcome to donate orchids, other plants, old orchid books, etc. for the raffle. It was suggested that members who bring plants for show and tell get one free raffle ticket. We decided in advance to cancel the January meeting due to impending weather. However, there will be a January newsletter for Holiday Party photos, show announcements, and other business. Several club members gave presentations on how they care for their orchids. Nancy Granner grows Phalaenopsis orchids in an east window and moves them to the family room where they grow under lights after they start to bloom. Laynez Ackermann talked about Cattleyas. He likes to grow them on bark and uses organic fertilizers. He grows hot peppers to make his own insecticides. Jim Quaintance grows Paphiopedilums in semi-hydroponics so he only has to water about every 5 days. Nile Dusdieker talked about dealing with pests. Cinnamon is helpful for crown rot or black rot. Neem oil can be useful but it must be mixed with warm water to keep sprayers from clogging. Nile also likes Dr. Bronner s Peppermint Castile Soap for scale and mealy bugs. Lois and the raffle table. Laynez talks about Cattleyas. It s Quarter Auction Time! We will have our annual quarter auction at the October 1 meeting. Have a plant that you just can t get to bloom no matter what you do? Bring it to the quarter auction and let someone else have a try! Is your house starting to look more like a jungle with all those keikis and divisions? Bring them to the quarter auction! Are you envious of Lois and Nile s huge collection of exotic orchids? Come to the quarter auction and add fabulous plants to your collection at bargain prices! Here s how it works: One or more of our members will act as auctioneers, while the rest of us bid on the available plants. We bid in quarters so a bid of 1 is $0.25, a bid of 2 is $0.50, a bid of 3 is $0.75, and a bid of 4 is $1.00! Proceeds from the Quarter Auction will help support our Holiday Party! Bring lots of plants and bid often or else we will serve SPAM at our Holiday Party! Blue Cheese for EIOS at Wisconsin Orchid Show! Your society did well at the Wisconsin Orchid Show at the Mitchell Park Domes in Milwaukee on the weekend of September 14-15, 2013. The Dusdiekers and Hamptons setup a 50' exhibit and received a 1st place blue ribbon for the effort. The show had over 400 orchids for judging which was a bit of a surprise considering our unusually hot dry weather. A special thanks to Doc Bannister for providing some beautiful large Cattleyas and Phalaenopsis. We had 41 plants from 7 club members and received 17 ribbons including Best Cattleya of the Show and Most Fragrant Orchid in the Show. Doc Bannister also received an AOS award for the Phalaenopsis Ox Spot Queen Iowa AM/AOS. Several of our members have one of these unusual harlequin clones and it is now nice to see it recognized by the judges. Five different orchid societies attended the show and most are coming to our show in October. Competition will be tough so encourage your beauties to bloom and be ready for the Eastern Iowa Orchid Show and Sale, October 19-20 at Noelridge Greenhouse in Cedar Rapids. Nile D. (Continued from page 1) which makes sense if orchids are in the basement. Others frequently use sunlight on a window sill. A few members grow their orchids in a greenhouse. Most members especially enjoy program presentations: slides, talks or guest speakers. Preferred topics were on orchid growing and care. Socializing/networking was frequently cited as important to members. Members also requested more member participation which is planned for the coming year. About one half of the responders are American Orchid Society members. Many members are willing to help with a variety of functions - refreshments, presentations, welcoming new members, raffle plants, orchid shows and serving as club officers. A GREAT RESOURCE!
