What a great meeting! Projects and Operations Manager Brooke Vacovsky gave a very informative presentation on organic gardening and pollinators. Afterwards, we toured the grounds of the Preserve. What a beautiful day to be outside! This was the first time many of us had been to Blue Heron and it was very interesting to learn of their history and all that they do! through Nov 30 DeKalb County Extension Service Importance of Evergreens in the Landscape and Their Winter Interest 4380 Memorial Drive, Decatur Nov. 6; 10:45 am; $10 fee Avondale Estates Garden Club Christmas Bazaar November 10, 9 am to 5 pm Avondale Community Center, 59 Lakeshore Drive, Avondale Estates Avon Garden Club Pancake Breakfast and Christmas Crafts November 17, 8 to 11 am Avondale Community Center, 59 Lakeshore Drive, Avondale Estates 3
Redbud District Annual Meeting The Redbud District Meeting was postponed from October 11 to October 15 due to the possibility of bad weather caused by Hurricane Michael. Deanna, Alice, Vickey and Sandy took off early Monday morning armed with a set of printed directions with the intention of arriving by 9:30. As has become a habit on these trips, they got lost! Fortunately, with the use of Google Maps on a cell phone, they were able to arrive only 30 minutes later than planned! Our bird-themed basket arrived in plenty of time for the raffle! Angelyn Tipton, a renowned floral designer, was the speaker. It was fascinating to watch her assemble flower arrangements as she spoke. She also provided one-of-a-kind arrangements for each of the dining tables (photos, right), and she described the style and types of flowers used in these during her talk. Shenandoah Rose received the Deanna McFarlan Newsletter Award. We were also presented a Standard of Excellence Certificate from the Garden Club of Georgia. To round things up, Deanna won a door prize and Sandy won one of the raffle baskets. 4
Callanwolde Planters Deanna, Barbara Maaskant and Sandy Reed met on October 31 to plant pansies in the 12 concrete planters outside the Garden Center. In keeping with the Homegrown Heroes theme, Sandy and Barbara had purchased trays of red, white and blue pansies earlier in the week at Growers Outlet. The plants are small now, but already add some color. By spring, they should be beautiful assuming the birds or squirrels don t dig them all up! Pull-a-Tab for Ronald McDonald House Something our newer members may not be aware of... Our club, along with DeKalb Federation and the Redbud District, save and collect aluminum pop-top tabs for Atlanta Area Ronald McDonald houses. You can bring these to any meeting and give to one of our Federation board members (Deanna, Barbara M., Barbara A., Sandy, Alice) and they will turn them in to Judy Lemoine, who is the chair of the Pull-a-Tab project for the Federation. This is such an easy thing to do that s has such great benefit! Ronald McDonald houses provide a place for family of hospitalized out-of-town children to stay. Since 1998, $133,000 has been collected for the Atlanta Ronald McDonald Houses through pop tab donations! Have a Happy Thanksgiving, Happy Hanukkah, Merry Christmas and Happy New Year! 5
