FEATURING Advanced air piping system Piranha 338 SS Pump SATA RPS n Vol. 6 No. 2 Fall 2010 NEWS Eurotech Spray Products Ltd. Calgary, Alberta Join SATA Spray Equipment this year at SEMA at the Las Vegas Convention Centre Booth 10703 November 2-5, 2010 SATA RPS - Rapid Preparation System Advanced air piping system & Shop layout tips: The safety professional or business manager faced with providing clean compressed air for the needs of today s body shop may find information complex and inconsistent. The most important and confusing area is defining the capacity and duty cycle to prevent compressor damage. Consulting with the compressor supplier is usually the best solution to establish air volume requirements. Usually a low-pressure (150 psi) compressor is utilized in the majority of body shops and many other industrial manufacturing firms. Air compressors are normally of the reciprocating or axial screw type. Either type can provide safe, clean breathable air quality when properly located, filtered and Eurotech Spray Products Ltd. 3636 Burnsland Road SE Calgary, AB T2G 3Z2 Child s Play 6860893 Entire contents of SATA News copyright by Eurotech Spray Products Ltd. SATA RPS - The mixing cup for painting, refilling, and storing paint. Very Simple - only three component No compromise - no adaptors required Perfect - reliable gravity flow principle Economical - saves time and cleaning solution Sturdy - perfect for storing remaining material Available in 0.3L, 0.6L, and 0.9L monitored. Choosing the location of the compressor that supplies the breathing air system is crucial. If intake air is clean and free of toxic gases the remainder of the system should not cause any special problem. However, if the compressor air intake is located inside a manufacturing plant, on the roof in proximity to vents and exhausts, or through a wall into an environment of auto exhaust, or within any toxic environment, there is virtually no chance that the system will function satisfactorily. Badly worn compressors often introduce excessive oil into the air delivery system and produce greater demands on the filtering conditioning units. (continued on page 3 - Shop Layout Evaluating Equipment for Waterborne Transformation Evaluating Equipment for Waterborne transformation With VOC regulations taking effect in Canada and other areas around the world - with more to follow - many shop owners recognize the need to switch to waterborne. There are a number of painters who are reluctant to change from solvent base materials to waterborne for collision repair. Many shop owners believe that changing from solvent borne to waterborne material will cost them dearly in new equipment. For most shops that is simply not true, in most cases the reward is worth more than the investment. Shop owners say that being greener and cleaner, there are less air borne solvents resulting in happier painters with less sick days taken. They also state that cleaner worksites mean less jobs reworked, resulting in higher profitability. Many shops already have most of the needed equipment in place. But when switching to waterborne, one of the most important things to look into is air quality. As compressed air flows through the air supply pipes, condensation, scale and oil or oil vapor can be carried along downstream. Even tiny amounts Introducing the new SATA air tester The quality of compressed air plays a decisive role in achieving high quality finishes. Oil, condensation and particles are the most common causes leading to coating flaws. To give end-users permanent security that they are working with clean compressed air, SATA has developed the SATA air tester which is from now on available under part # 156299. By blowing compressed air into the specially coated mirror glass surface potential residues, and thus possible causes for coating flaws, become instantly visible. Contaminations on the SATA air tester surface indicate that either the filter unit requires immediate maintenance (exchange or the filter cartridges) or that a suitable filter unit needs to be installed. That is usually not a problem for sanders and some other air tools. But it can be a problem for breathing air and/or spraying paint material particularly waterborne. Waterborne paint is extremely sensitive to oil contamination. Oil contamination introduces oil vapor into the air stream for breathing air and usually causes very small silicone-like craters (fish eyes) in the paint coating. That results in expensive repair work regardless of whether conventional solventbased or waterborne material is used. The twostage filter system that filters down to 0.01 micron has been standard SATA 444 Filter equipment in many quality body shops. However when compressed air is carried downstream typical two-stage filter units cannot purge oil vapour. (continued on page 2 - Evaluating Equipment) Permanent control provides enhanced security and thus helps avoid costly rework. Fits into the pocket of every painters overalls to be ready at hand whenever needed. Reasonably priced, yet effective control instrument - should not be missing in any body shop.

TECH TIPS NOTE: Excerpts from Online Forum - Minor corrections or changes have been made to the text for clarity. If you have a question about SATA spray equipment visit our web site at www.satacanada.com Q: With all the new water borne paints out there how do I know which nozzle size is best for my SATAminijet 3000 B HVLP gun? A: Well I wish it was that easy to tell you which one works the best but like its big brother the SATAjet 3000 B guns there are a lot of variables! But here we go, from what we have seen in the field you could see people spraying 1.0 SR to people using 1.4 SR sets. The best info I could give you would be to contact a local paint rep. or Tech. Reason being he is the one most familiar with which product you are using, and even more important would be the part of country you are spraying in. As we have found with the big guns the temperature as well as humidity play a huge role in nozzle selection. I can also tell you that the SATAminijet 3000 B HVLP is coated just like its big brother so if cleaned and lubricated as recommended you should have a water or solvent gun forever. Good luck and enjoy your SATA guns! Dear SATA First off, I would like it known that I am a dedicated, lifetime SATA Man. I will never buy any other spray gun brand again. 6 years ago I bought a 2000 HVLP spray gun and it was the best gun I d ever used, however over time it wore out from the heavy usage, and I sought to buy a new gun, regretfully through a SATA competitor. It was complete junk as far as I was concerned. I went through a few other brands, never having the finish, quality or standards I excepted, and never any of them lasting more than a few months. I used the competitor guns for both top and base coats, so I feel I had a good measure of performance from both ends of the spectrum, FINALLY - I told myself I am going to spend the money and buy 3 new guns from SATA. I bought the 3000 RP, 3000 HVLP and the new 100 HVLP for primer. They work amazing! I will never go back to any other spray gun. I tell everyone "I know how great SATA is." Just want to say thanks for building amazing spray guns. Believe me these guns are not cheap, but worth their own weight in gold. Thanks a lot! Steve J. Toronto, ON (continued from page 1 - Evaluating Equipment) Usually oil vapor can be detected by odor if the painter is using a supplied air respirator but can be eliminated by using a charcoal belt unit or by adding a charcoal filter. When spraying waterborne, adding a third stage activated charcoal filter is Add-on charcoal filter for breathing and painting waterborne material ideal. Activated charcoal absorbs oil and organic vapours in compressed air making it suitable for breathing air and spraying waterborne. When the activated charcoal filter cartridge becomes saturated or the expiration date is exceeded, the filter cartridge is replaced. SATA offers two different three stage filter systems that filters out water, oil droplets and particle sizes down to 0.01 micron, these systems also have the charcoal filter that eliminate oil vapours SATA 484 Filter and odors. At this point we are spraying with breathing air quality. You may ask why it is so important to have the quality of air this clean? You must keep in mind that you are not only breathing and spraying with this air, but you will also be drying your waterborne base coat with portable dry-jets on stands or by hand. With all of this air blowing on to your wet base coat, just the slightest amount of contamination from oil vapours and you will end up with a costly rework of the job. In general the paint booth of today has been designed for solvent base material. It relies on heat to speed up solvent evaporation. On the other hand waterborne requires high airflow volume to speed water evaporation. Some drying systems now available 2 are being offered to outfit spray booths that cost upwards of $100,000, however investments in expensive waterborne drying systems are not necessary. SATA has developed a cost effective drying system. We have found that this alternative is so effective that even shops that have outfitted their booths with expensive stationary air-drying units are still buying portable units like the SATA dry-jet and stand. SATA dry-jet (right) is a practical, lightweight handheld blowgun that makes quick work of drying waterborne material. An alternative, the SATA dry-jet "S" (shown below) operates with the same flawless technology but is mount only for blow-dry stands SATA reacted to demand by developing a simple to use, cost effective waterborne drying system named SATA dry-jet. This convenient blowgun can be hand held or mounted on a stand. The special design multiplies ambient air volume by utilizing the venturi injection principle. The SATA dry-jet has an intake filter to prevent paint contamination. It is equipped SATA dry-jet with stand, available with extension for 3rd SATA dry-jet blow gun with a Teflon ball shut-off valve and air consumption is only 8.2 cfm at 29 psi. This means that the SATA dry-jet, uses the least amount of air in the industry, compared to some of the portable units that use up to 20 cfm per portable hand held unit. Most shops will require two stands with two drying units per stand to dry a typical front clip. This is when the volume of air becomes important. If your filter system or compressor cannot deliver the volume of air needed then the waterborne base coats will not dry as paint manufacturers claim. Now that we have quality spraying and drying air - we must now consider our breathing air. All paint manufacturers strongly suggest fresh air respirators. SATA offers a NIOSH approved air respirator hood, the SATA vision 2000 is a type C continuous flow supplied air respirator hood with a full face shield and does not need to be fit tested. It consists of two major components: the full respirator hood and the belt unit or the belt SATA vision 2000 respirator hood valve. Breathing air is filtered through activated charcoal to purify the air and remove odor or hydrocarbon vapor. Airflow is adjusted with a throttle valve and a gauge is installed on the belt unit to visually monitor accurate airflow. The vision 2000 hood is very comfortable and features an adjustable headband. Painters with beards, mustaches or eyeglasses will appreciate the full hood protection. It has a wide field of vision with single pane, non-glare, anti-static, and nondraft, tip-up visor. The hygienic linings and sweatband are easy to replace along with tear-off sheets for keeping clean field of vision. The clean up of waterborne paint brings up two major concerns. The first being, can my current spray gun be used with waterborne paint? As we know, aluminum and water is not a good combination. Many spray guns being used in the shops today have aluminum cups. These must be replaced with plastic reusable cups or (preferably) a plastic single use cup system. Single use cup systems reduce the amount of paint waste material which can cost as much as three times the amount of waste to dispose of. SATA has RPS Mix - Paint - Dispose (or Store) answered this issue with the SATA RPS. This single use cup system comes complete with graduated ratios for mixing, plug-in sieve or flat sieve, and quick connect lid. With a plastic cup, yes most guns can be used for waterborne paints. The second concern is of the spray gun itself, is it designed to atomize waterborne paints and will it corrode with water?. The SATAjet 3000 B HVLP and RP along with the SATAminijet 3000 B were designed to give the atomization needed and have been approved by all paint manufacturers. The guns have also been designed not to corrode using waterborne paints. They are manufactured with a threestep process ending with chrome on the exterior to ease the cleaning. This along with the stainless steel fluid nozzle needle set eliminates corrosion. In conclusion; paint shop and spray booth areas will need to be cleaner in today s waterborne shop than they were when spraying solvent paints. Painters should wear paint suits, gloves, and use fresh air systems, not only to be safe but also to eliminate contamination of the surface to be painted. Poor air from compressors, filter systems and low quality airline hoses can create contamination and need to be upgraded. Now having clean air, proper spray equipment and drying equipment in place, shops will need to have clean spraying and drying conditions due to all the extra air movement during painting and drying. The transformation to waterborne need not be expensive with a thorough evaluation of the shop equipment. As the compressor produces hot air, the refrigerant dryer cools the compressed air and condenses much of the moisture for easy removal. This prepares the air for further treatment. A storage tank is necessary to maintain a constant supply of compressed air as needed. The tank should be sized to meet the demands of the shop. In regards to an air compressor as the source of breathing air, the following is recommended: Compressed breathing air shall meet at least the requirements for Grade D breathing air to include: Oxygen content of 19.5-23.5%; Hydrocarbon (condensed) content of 5 milligrams per cubic meter of air or less; Carbon Monoxide (CO) content of 5 ppm or less; Carbon Dioxide content of 500 ppm or less For compressors that are not oil lubricated, the employer shall ensure that carbon monoxide levels in the breathing air do not exceed 5 ppm. For oil lubricated compressors, the employer shall use a hightemperature or carbon monoxide alarm, or both. If only a hightemperature alarm is used, the air from the compressor shall be frequently tested to monitor carbon monoxide levels... Often pipes may be a long distance from the compressor to the delivery point. Pipes of adequate diameter and proper material to avoid pressure loss and contamination of the air stream are required. The most common material in use is black iron pipe. With proper design, filtering and monitoring, it is fully acceptable. Thermo-plastic pipes should never be used because the material might out-gas in the event of high ambient temperatures. Out-gassing is a term meaning the release of toxic gases as air flows over the material used in the manufacturing process. The size of pipe and over-all system design for a major installation would exceed the scope of this review. However, Pipes must be carefully sized, looped and arranged to minimize pressure drop and should be sloped to drain towards a drop leg or moisture trap. See figure below for a general overview and correct method of installation. The objective is to plan a delivery system that will avoid pressure loss due to unnecessary flow restriction with a reasonable size of plumbing and deal with the accumulation of oil, scale and water. Pressure drop between the compressor and point of use is irrecoverable. 2. Pipe size should be large enough that pressure drop doesn't exceed 10% between receiver and point of use. 3. Arrange piping to avoid strains. 4. Locate air compressor to draw clean uncontaminated air from the atmosphere. 5. Drain air compressor and drain legs in the a.m. 6. Plan ahead for future expansion and establish an area of loop to install temporary compressor. 7. Consider by-pass lines on all items that may require future maintenance. 8. Use loop piping system if possible, both around the plant and within each shop. Loop piping has 1/2 the pressure drop than that of a straight run for the same overall length of pipe 9. Consider second air receiver at end of line or loop if you have peak demands for air of short durations. 10. Locate outlets from the main header as close as possible to the point of application. This limits pressure drops. 11. Outlets must always be taken from the top of the pipe line to prevent carryover of condensed moisture to tools. 12. All piping should slope so that it drains towards a drop leg or moisture trap - away from compressor. 13. A minimum of 25 ft. to first outlet is recommended to cool air. 14. The main air line stand pipe should not be smaller than the compressor outlet size. 3

Recommended for Waterborne! When switching to waterborne, one of the most important things to look into is the air quality and volume of air. The two-stage filter system has been standard equipment in many quality body shops. However when compressed air is carried downstream typical two-stage filter units cannot purge oil vapor. Usually oil vapor can be detected by odor if the painter is using a respirator. When spraying waterborne, adding a (464 filter) third stage activated charcoal filter is ideal. Activated charcoal absorbs oil and organic vapours in compressed air making it suitable for breathing air and spraying waterborne. ed mend Recom al turer ri c te fa a u em Man Paint r Waterborn fo SATA 484 Triple Stage Fine Filter When using the SATA belt valve, breathing air must be filtered through activated charcoal on the wallmounted filter. An activated charcoal stage is also an excellent choice when using water borne paint to remove oil residue. Two ball valves and single air connections module. Order Number 92320 Filter Accessories The 200 filter system for small or intermediate shops Along with the 400, the 200 filter series is the most versatile modular filter system currently on the market but at an unbeatable price. The 200 is rated at 72 cfm @ 90 psi, more than adequate for many small shops. It can be connected to compressed air pipes from either the right or left side. When atomized air leaves the spray gun, it must be clean, dry and free of condensation, silicone, oil or any other contamination. Otherwise, the finished result can have a dull finish, fish eyes, water or dust. Clean, pure air is also a must for breathing air. Piranha 338 SS Double Diaphragm Pump SATAjet 20 B Glazing Gun Pump is a stainless steel unit that delivers consistent fluid delivery with the robust durability of stainless steel. This compact unit offers functionality with numerous coatings from low viscosity waterborne to high viscosity urethanes and epoxies. Regardless of your coating selection, the Piranha 338-SS Double Diaphragm is ready to work for you. Pump is at home in the fleet, miscellaneous metal manufacturing, cabinet manufacturing, aviation and marine environment where equipment dependability is a must. Pump is a user friendly, easy to maintain pump that can be a direct replacement for the conventional pressure pot. This allows the operator to inspect fluid levels and/or add additional material without having to disconnect the air supply, bleed pressure off of the tank and remove the lid. There are multiple configurations that allow 1 to 2 applicators to work with a continuous stable fluid delivery free from pressure surge. Clean up is improved by eliminating the tedious steps to clean a pressure pot. Just flush the system with good, clean solvent and clean wipe the pick up tube. The unit can also be configured to cycle the solvent into an approved container as a continuous flush cycle. This allows the unit to loop the material through the hose back to the container. After you have completed several cycles of cleaning solvent, just purged the lines and put away. This process also allows the technician to dramatiy reduce the amount of solvent waste which in turn, saves money. Pump can be used with all Satajet K spray equipment be it HVLP or RP. Sata fluid couplers complement this unit allowing for quick connect/disconnect of the spray gun from the fluid hose and are available with or without an internal filtration sieve. Pump is available as a wall mount, stand mount or mobile cart mount configuration. Contact for additional information today!
