1. Introduction The Spectra FIA light engine consists of 5 individually addressable light sources with 4 individual LEDs and 1 luminescent light pipe. The output of these individual sources are combined with dichroics such that the light from each channel illuminates the entrance port of the two fiber bundles. These light sources are precisely mounted on a common heat sink. The circuit boards are mounted below the heat sink. The exhaust fan pulls fresh air from the front of the light engine across the heat sink fins and exhaust the heated air out the rear panel. The light sources within the Spectra FIA light engine are controlled by software; via one of two serial interfaces, RS-232 or TCP, to the onboard computer operating Lumencor firmware. The user can enable or disable each source independently by serial commands as well as change the intensity of each source independently. The only manual control is a power switch on the front panel to turn on/off the power into the unit. The Spectra FIA light engine can either be controlled by a Lumencor GUI or by a LAN connection to an onboard computer with an embedded command library. Spectra FIA Light Engine Instruction Manual 3

decreased product life and/or premature failure. Thermal overload protection is provided by the on-board computer in conjunction with an onboard temperature sensor. If the internal temperature registered by the sensor exceeds 50 C OR the fan rotor is stopped, all light output channels automatically turn OFF and are locked in this state until the internal temperature is below 50 C and/or the fan restarts. The current reading of the on-board temperature sensor is displayed in the GUI (Figure 5) or can be accessed using the GET TEMP software command. Normal exhaust airflow (with all light sources operating at 100%) has been measured at 52.7 m 3 /hour with a temperature 6 C above ambient. Connect the DC power supply to the power input port (front panel, lower left corner) using the DC power cable (Lumencor part number 29-10098 or 29-10103). See Figure 2 for pin connections. Position the unit in such an orientation that allows unrestricted access to the DC power connector. In an emergency, you may ned to disconnect power to the unit quickly. Spectra FIA light engine schematic The Spectra FIA light engine has two identical light output ports A and B built directly into the light engine front panel (Figure 3). The ports are custom designed for connection to Nikon s fiber bundles. Each fiber bundle should be inserted Spectra FIA Light Engine Instruction Manual 7
all the way into the correct port and then 3 screws are used to mechanically attached the fiber bundle to the light engine. The insertion depth is set at the factory for optimum performance. 3.3 Operation The only manual control is a power switch on the front panel to turn the electrical power to the unit on or off. A green power indicator on the front panel is lit ( ON ) when the power supply is connected to the Spectra FIA light engine and the power switch is in the on position. Prior to turning the light output on, be sure the output end of the fiber bundle is safely directed into an enclosed optical path (e.g. a beam dump). The Spectra FIA light engine can either be controlled by a Lumencor GUI or via the built in library of software commands. A complete listing of the commands is provided in the Lumencor Light Engine Command Reference (Document Number 57-10018). The software commands can be Figure 4. Spectra FIA light engine control GUI screenshot transmitted via the RS-232 port or the LAN input. The default IP address for LAN communications is 192.168.2.1. The current IP address can be determined using the GET IP command sent over RS-232. The RS-232 port conforms to the standard RS-232 interface protocol using standard RS-232 connector pin definitions. The default RS-232 port parameters are 9600,8,N,1. The RJ-45 port enables communication using Transmission Control Protocol (TCP). The GUI provides a quick and easy way to control the light engine providing the ability to turn each source on/off, adjust the power of each source independently from off to full power. The GUI also tracks the total on time and the power sensor readings. The GUI is accessed by typing in the IP address into a web browser (Figure 4). Spectra FIA Light Engine Instruction Manual 8
