CBI Report (2007) Market forces will drive big changes, but they will not by themselves be enough to do the job. The full range of public policies must be deployed to create the right incentives. Next 2-3 years are critical Carbon= corporate DNA
Challenges A key challenge is the 98:2 % ratio existing v newbuild stock. New legislation here should create asset value differentials (energy rating of buildings). Cities and built environment are complex: they present wicked problems (RCEP, 2007)... Need to remember its not just environmental sustainability. Economic recession will sustainability suffer ( eco-crunch )?
Oxford Brookes and Oxford Institute for Sustainable Development (OISD) (Prof. Tim Dixon, Director OISD)
Oxford Brookes University Consistently ranked the topperforming modern university in the UK (Times, Guardian): 18,700 students Progressive, inclusive and responsive Strong teaching Research given high priority, with high quality staff and links closely with teaching Environmental status Green Gown award, sustainable travel plan and Fairtrade Redevelopment of campus
Oxford Institute for Sustainable Development OISD---largest UK research institute dedicated to sustainability/built environment research Environmental Assessment & Spatial Planning (EASP) Urban Policy & International Development (UPID) Urban Design Group (UDG) Sustainable Urban Environments - Wellbeing and Cities (SUE) Architecture, Culture & Technology (ACT) International Land Markets (ILM) Achieving a balance
Where OISD and SoBE expertise can be applied Compact and healthy communities what makes for a sustainable community? Urban renewal how can we develop brownfield sites sustainably? Strategic Environmental Assessment what is the impact of major infrastructure projects? Carbon reduction how can we reduce carbon footprints? Energy performance how can we improve the energy performance of existing stock? Modular buildings what are the key trends? Sustainable real estate- what s the value impact?
Applications of OISD expertise: some current examples Inclusive Design for Getting Outdoors (EPSRC I DGO) Sustainability and urban environment (EPSRC City Form) Sustainable brownfield regeneration and contaminated land (EPSRC SUBR:IM) Planning for climate change (EPSRC ASSCUE) Sustainability and issues relating to green buildings: IPF and RICS Carbon modelling, photovoltaic, energy and sustainability, and solar design. Post occupancy evaluation Knowledge management and knowledge creation (EPSRC). Environmental Impact Assessment. EIBURS
