Open Gates A publication of the Gates Cactus & Succulent Society July 2018 NEXT MEETING, WEDNESDAY, July 11th at 7:00 PM AT THE REDLANDS CHURCH OF THE NAZARENE 1307 E CITRUS AVE, IN REDLANDS, CA Plants of the Month Cactus Photograph Succulent - Photograph Save the Date! July 19-21 - Orange county cactus and succulent show and sale AUG. 11-12 - 33 rd Annual Intercity Show and Sale Sept. 1 st - Huntington Botanical Garden succulent symposium Sept. 15 th - Long Beach Cactus Club Annual Plant Actuion From Our President: The summer solstice has finally arrived and so too has the high temperature reminding us to water our plants more often. While you are hydrating yourself and the plant, here are some further tips to managing the heat, with respect to your plants, during the next three months. Microclimate is everything to the successful thriving of the plant so be mindful of where you place the plant. When in doubt, place your plant on the south and/or southeast side of your house. The west-facing side of the house will bear the brunt of the scorching heat and direct sun exposure during most of the summer days. Therefore, avoid this side for most of the non-cactus succulents as well as for many of the burn-sensitive cacti. Here s where you need to balance the need of the plant to have sunlight exposure for healthy growth versus the irreversible burn damage from over exposure. You need to know the specific nature of each plant s limitation. Many of the hardy agaves, aloes, and cacti, and also depending on the maturity of the plant, will be able to tolerate the full and direct sun exposure and heat. These include our favorite barrel cactus, opuntias, echinocereus, echinopsis, ferocactus, and the columnar cereus. Be cognizant of how much watering each particular plant needs. Even with the dry summer heat, you can over water the succulent and consequently drown it. That s why proper and optimal soil drainage is the key factor to growing happy succulents. If you are novice or beginning gardeners and you are wondering how and where can you learn more about caring for your succulent? Come to our monthly meeting and learn from other club members and our main presentation. -Phuc President 909-910-9195 Phuc Huynh Director 951-897-2220 Karen Roholt Vice President 760-881-0184 Trisha Davis Director 909-567-4027 Andrew Gould Past President 909-783-2477 Don McGrew Director 909-882-6013 Sande Martin Treasurer 909-633-6934 Jo Ann Crabtree Director 909-987-5706 John Reynolds Secretary 330-986-6313 Jeffery Loew Librarian 951-682-3795 Karen Fleisher Editor 760-881-0184 Trisha Davis Greeter 951-781-8205 Teresa Wassman Sales Chair 909-987-5706 Ann Reynolds Cactus Rescue 330-986-6313 Jeffery Loew Program chair 661-406-9816 Woody Minnich Leadership Team 2018

Our Program This Month Ernesto Sandoval " Propagation of Succulents from Seed at the UC Davis Botanical Conservatory Ernesto and Company been experimenting with various techniques for propagating succulents from seed and want to share these techniques and tips for better seed germination. If you haven t tried growing from seed or if you are looking for ways to perhaps increase your success rate, Ernesto thinks you ll appreciate this visual tour of propagation of plants such Welwitschia, Aloes, Cacti, Dorstenia, Othonna, Mesembs and more. BIO Ernesto Sandoval has been wondering and seeking questions to why plants grow and look the way that they do fro a young age. Now he explains and interprets the world of plants to people of a variety of ages and experiences from K-12 to. He regularly lectures to a variety of western Garden Clubs throughout the year and particularly to Succulent Clubs throughout California and elsewhere since that group of plants is his particular passion within his general passion for plants. He describes himself as a "Jose of all plants, master of none." Ernesto thoroughly enjoys helping everyone, and gardeners in particular, to understand why and how plants do what they do. When he was about 13 he asked his dad why one tree was pruned a particular way and another tree another way. His dad answered bluntly "because that's the way you do it. Since then he's been finding the answers to those and many other questions by getting a degree at UC Davis in Botany and working from student weeder/waterer to Director over the last 28 years at the UC Davis Botanical Conservatory. He's long left the "mow blow and go" landscape gardening world of Los Angeles and has immersed himself in the world of biodiversity by growing several thousand types of plants at the UC Davis Botanical Conservatory, many of them succulents. He loves the technical language of Botany but prefers to relate information in more understandable methods of communication! By helping people to understand the workings of plants he hopes to help us better understand how to and why our plants do what they do and how we can maximize their growth, or at least appreciate what they do, with less effort and a better understanding.
