e The INFLORESENCE Orchids for Amateurs South Bay Orchid Society, Inc. P.O. BOX 3793 Torrance, CA 90510-3793 www.southbayorchidsociety.com Dendrobium Avril's Gold 'Don Brown' Our February 19, 2016 Guest Speaker will be Fred Clarke Sunset Valley Orchids Aussie Native Dendrobiums and Their Cultivation Our friends down under have been breeding their native Dendrobiums and creating some fantastic flowers, the word is out! Aussie Dens are easy to grow, tolerant of heat and cold, have fragrant flowers, and re-bloom from the old bulbs!!! They grow well with Cattleyas and in frost free areas they are perfect plants for the shade house. The presentation will cover the best practices for growing these remarkable plants. Fred Clarke has been growing orchids for 33 years and has been hybridizing for 25 of those years. With over 25 years as a professional grower and manager in the horticultural industry, Fred applies these skills at his orchid nursery; Sunset Valley Orchids, located in San Diego, California. He is a passionate orchid grower whose curiosity in orchids is broad and varied. Although developing Cattleya hybrids has been his sustaining interest, he is also actively creating new Aussie Dendrobium and Paphiopedilum hybrids. His pioneering work in Catasetum intergeneric hybrids led to the development of several notable hybrids, most recently the grex, Fredclarkeara After Dark, which produced the blackest flower ever witnessed. This grex has received eight FCC s, eight AM s and the coveted Award of Distinction on the first flowers shown for judging! Fred is an Accredited AOS Judge in the Pacific South Judging Region. His plants have received hundreds of quality awards from the American Orchid Society. The plant table will be provided by Fred Clarke from Sunset Valley Orchids February 2016 South Bay Orchid Society page 1
February President s Message Greetings Everyone, The month of January provided some wonderful opportunities for the members of our society. George Hatfield, from Hatfield Orchids, presented a potting demonstration for cymbidiums. All of the participants received a three year old seedling of one of Mr. Hatfield s crosses. He stressed the need to use damp bark and a clean pot when repotting. A final step was to verify that the bark was tight around the new plant. This was accomplished by attempting to lift the pot by holding the new seedling. If the plant stayed tight in the bark, then you were successful. We cannot wait to see the results of these crosses. George followed with an interesting presentation on some of his award winning cymbidiums and their parentage. One of the most interesting facts for me, was once green cymbidiums are in bud, you need to place them in the shade. If you do not, the flowers will turn from green to a pale yellow. For all new orchid growers, cymbidiums are one of the easiest to grow and flower. Brandon Tam led a marvelous tour for the members of our society, who visited the Huntington Library. He began his tour with a short history of the grounds. He went on to describe the Huntington s home and even their mausoleum. Next was a visit to the Conservatory, where numerous Phaphiopedilums, Phaleonopsis, and Cattelayas were on display. However the highlight of the tour for our members were the greenhouses. We visited a warm, cool, and intermediate greenhouse. In the intermediate greenhouse we saw numerous Phaphiopedilums in bloom in addition to Cattleyas, Lycastes, and numerous other genre. The variety of colors was unbelievable. He gave us a brief lesson on the famous rare stinky plant (Amorphophallus titanium The Stink). Brandon also mentioned that the Huntington can always use more volunteers to help with repotting. Volunteers can contact him. Following the tour, we were allowed to continue viewing the grounds. The Chinese and Japanese gardens were breathtaking. All of the members who participated had a tremendous time. Thank you to Karen Low for arranging this field trip for the society. Our February speaker will be Fred Clarke. His topic will be on Australian Dendrobiums. He is the owner of Sunset Valley Orchids. Please join us in February to hear his presentation.
