Instructions for use of the above IHS HOTY Trialing Form: Introduction: This form is designed to provide all the information for all candidates for a given year, throughout the 3 year trialing period. For example, one fills out the data for the first nth period and submits it as indicated below to the IHS. For the next nth period the same form with previous data is completed and submitted. Accordingly, at the end of the 3 year trialing period, all information for all candidates for that year is included in this single form. There will be similar such forms for each of the 3 years candidates, meaning a given trialing station has only three forms (one for each year candidates) to cover all the data requested. The changing data has provision for comments for each of the six months periods. Should the static data (essentially unchanging data) requested additionally evolve, it can be noted for a giving trialing period in the comments section at the bottom of the form. For example static data includes the below which should be pretty much unchanging, but should they change or evolve, such can be noted in the comments section. Take a specific case where say during the first three six month periods a given candidate was prone to white fly infestation, but out grew this problem in the 4 th period, it could so be noted. Likewise, should bloom size change as the plant matures, it could be so noted in the comments section, etc. for any of the below basically static data. Pest or Disease Date of first bloom Bloom Size a,mi-mx Bloom Substance1-3 Bloom Duration 1-3 Color Stability 1-3 Bloom Form 1-3 Bloom Pres. 1-6 Optional Info. Prun = no branches Prop=Gr, OR,Op,BG Seeder = 1-3 Pollen = 1-3 HOTY Trialing Form - Page 8 of 11

Please provide a copy of this form after filling in the appropriate information in the above table via email to the IHS HOTY Coordinator every nths (end of January and end of July for the preceding nth periods). The current HOTY Coordinator is Nina Bjelovucic at nina.bjelovucic@inet.hr In the appropriate space provided on the table, please provide a paragraph to describe your growing techniques: root stock used, type of graft, whether trialed with plants grown in the ground or in pots (mention pot size), whether grown in a greenhouse, outdoors or alternated from season to season, growing media, watering techniques (manual, automated, frequency), water quality ph, fertilization program (frequency, formulas used), illumination (full sun, under shade cloth [percent shade]) light meter readings, temperatures (high and low) experienced by the plants etc. If all plants are grown the same way that should be stated, and if the methods change for all or fewer than all varieties, there is also space in the above table to enter that information. Please include anything else thought to be pertinent. Photos: At each sending, please provide the following photos: (resize to approximately 450 pixels in one dimension leaving the other at whatever is required to maintain the aspect ratio) see examples below. Every nths: Bush: a lateral photo showing as much as possible the complete bush, hopefully where it is easily distinguished from the background and other vegetation. At the end of the trialing period: Bloom photos: those considered representative with 3 angles (top, diagonal and side view of a single flower) Bloom variations, not more than three bloom variants, i.e., daily or seasonal changes. Recommendations: You have been selected for your expertise in trialing tropical hibiscus, and the IHS extends its appreciation for your efforts in this regard. At the same time, we would like to make a few recommendations. As the purpose of trialing is to determine the performance of a given seedling as dictated by its inherent genetic make up, trialing stations should make every effort to assure variables are reduced to a minimum. For example, all candidates should be grafted on to the same root stock of similar age and development; the same kind of graft should be used on each where feasible; they should be grown under essentially identical conditions with respect to growing media (root competition if grown in the ground), illumination, water and fertilization frequency, etc., with the exception that these elements need to be fine tuned depending upon the demands of the seedling in question. The requirements to produce a good bush or any other pertinent observations can be described in the comments section for each candidate at the bottom of the above table. Please note that if more room is needed for comments, just keep typing and the space will automatically increase. HOTY Trialing Form - Page 9 of 11

Propagation & Use Of HOTY Candidate Wood by the IHS Propagation Station and IHS Trialing Stations: Propagation Station: Normally 4 to 6 pieces of wood of each candidate is to be supplied by the hybridizer to the IHS propagation station. It is to be grown for 14 to 1nths, so that ideally the propagation station can supply four 6 pieces to each trialing station in the hopes that they can all get at least two plants of each candidate growing all at the same time one for a back up in case the original plant is lost during the trialing period. If a trialing station fails to get two plants growing, they are expected to request additional wood from the propagation station. Trialing Stations: Wood is provided by the propagation station to each trialing station as above. We would respectfully ask that each trialing station do their best to achieve of the each candidate the best possible bush, with the largest possible number of branches and, accordingly, the greatest possible number of blooms through spring, summer and autumn. Any propagation by the trialing station of IHS HOTY candidate wood should only be done with wood from normal pruning, which is done systematically to each of the candidates in the normal pruning season, so that all plants receive the same treatment. For both the propagation station and trialing stations, with authorization from the hybridizer, excess wood may be propagated for the purposes authorized by the hybridizer. Such hybridizer authorizations should be passed to the IHS HOTY coordinator to be forwarded to the HOTY committee where it will be archived as a matter of record, and it will also be sent to the propagation station and trialings stations for their records. Normally this authorization will be provided to the propagation station or trialing stations at the time of their receipt of wood, but propagation or trialing stations are free to request such authorization from the hybridizer at any time. Once such authorization is provided by the hybridizer, the hybridizer may not revoke same without the express consent of the propagation or trialing stations concerned. In case no such authorisation is provided, such propagations and wood are free for the trialing station to use as it sees fit only after the termination of the 3 year trialing period for each candidate. Definitions and explanation of categories in the above table: Bush height and width should be provided in inches to the nearest inch Number of branches are the number of branch tips that can potentially produce blooms when the trialing report is compiled at the end of each 6 month period. Pest or Disease: PF=problem free, BlP=bloom tends to have problems - pollen beetle, etc, BsP=bush tends to have problems - prone to scale, fungus, etc. if further description necessary use comments section below. Date of first bloom is self explanatory Maximum number of blooms is the largest number of blooms seen on the bush on any given day. If it happens to be a two day bloomer, those flowers that were still fresh looking would count as blooms for the maximum even if it was their second day. Floriferousness: 1=poor, 2=below average, 3=average, 4=above average, 5=very good, 6=maximum as in near species types. Bloom size in inches should be listed with average followed by minimum and maximum, e.g. 7.5, 6 8 Bloom substance, the thickness of the petals as follows: 1=thin, 2=average, 3=good Bloom duration: 1,2,3,4 days etc., i.e., the number of days the bloom remains open Color Stability: CF=colors fast meaning it hold it color, F=fades, B=burns, the blackening noted particularly in reds. Bloom Form: NR= basically flat, RF=always has a degree of reflexing, RFE = Reflexes early by flattens later, e.g., RFE-12 would mean, reflexes early but flattens out by noon or RFE-24 reflexes early but flattens out next day. T=trumpet shaped, and TE means trumpet shaped early but flattens out later as for RFE. Bloom Presentation: U=upward, DU=diagonally upward, LU=lateral to upward, LD=lateral to downward, DD=diagonally downward, P=pendulous or hand almost vertically. Optional Info: in information that is not required but should the trailing station makes these determinations in the course of trailing would be considered of value. Prop or Propagation: Gr = grows as a Grafted plant only, OR = will grow well on its Own Root, Op = optional - fine either way, BG= Better Grafted but will grow on its own root. Seeder: 1=reluctant seeder, 2=average seeder, 3 good seeder Pollen: 1=little or briefly viable pollen, 2=average pollen, 3=hot pollen, i.e., particularly good in getting even reluctant seeders to produce pods.
