APPLICATION FOR RESIDENCE IN THE MACALESTER COLLEGE ECOHOUSE ***Your electronically signed application is due to an Ann Esson at esson@macalester.edu no later than 2 pm, Monday, February 25, 2019*** Name (please print): I wish to apply for residence in the EcoHouse during: The full 2019-2020 school year Fall 2019 Spring 2020 Are you submitting your individual application along with a group of other students? Yes No (check one) If yes, who is the lead contact student for your group? My expected graduation date (month and year): My major(s): My minor(s): What Environmental Studies courses or other relevant courses have you taken in college? Course Instructor Grade What Environmental Studies courses or other relevant courses will you be taking while you live in the EcoHouse?

Residents will be announced on Wednesday, February 27 In no more than two pages please explain your reasons for wanting to live in the EcoHouse, what you expect to gain from this experience, and what you expect to contribute. How will you facilitate and participate in this intentional, cooperative, sustainability-focused group living experience? You may also wish to describe your participation, if any, in environmental and/or sustainable living work while at Macalester.

I understand that living in the EcoHouse is campus housing. All residents must abide by Residential Life and College policies and agree to the 2019-20 Housing Contract that will be available through their MyHousing page. Living in the EcoHouse will cost $100 more per semester than the regular dormitory charge. In addition, I agree to work together with other house members to equitably delegate the tasks of house cleanliness, property upkeep, worm bin maintenance and communal meals. Communal meal times and frequency will be decided among house members as needed. They form a key opportunity to reflect on the experience, bond as a group, and discuss house matters. I agree to explore and expand the EcoHouse mission and activities, as outlined in the following sheets, and to propose amendments as needed. I will help host 2-3 events throughout the semester, and will participate in regular meetings with the EcoHouse advisor, Prof. Christie Manning, to be scheduled at the beginning of each semester. I also agree to write a reflection on the EcoHouse at the end of every semester of residence, offering feedback on the experience and advice to be passed on to future residents, which will become a permanent part of the EcoHouse journal. My typed name on the line below is my electronic signature, which signifies a binding contract and should be understood as an actual signature. (Signature) (Date) Campus address: Phone: Email:

Residents will be announced on Wednesday, February 27 MISSION AND GUIDELINES The Vision The EcoHouse gives students a unique opportunity to explore practical green-living lifestyles, to test the effectiveness of new green technologies, and to work with community partners to develop better resources on green renovations and sustainable lifestyles. In addition, once it is equipped with a planned state-of-the-art energy monitoring system, the house will function as a "live-in" laboratory for testing the energy savings and cost-effectiveness of various renovations and green technologies. Such a system will allow the EcoHouse to provide empirical data on the performance of various house systems that we can then share with many others. EcoHouse residents will host various events, skill-shares, and workshops, and will develop a comprehensive web site to help build connections between on and off-campus resources. The EcoHouse is guided by an ambitious vision and is in continual development as the needs and desires of the house s residents evolve. Selection Criteria and Process Criteria 1) Enthusiasm for EcoHouse goals and desire to explore sustainable living practices. 2) ES major or minor and/or strong interest in sustainability issues. 3) Commitment to contributing to the EcoHouse and to developing its various activities. 4) Respect of housemates and ability to live collaboratively with others. 5) Active participation in EcoHouse Advisory Board meetings and activities. 6) Priority will be given to students that apply as a group but individual students are also encouraged to apply. Students may apply for a semester or for a full year. Process Students will be evaluated on stated criteria by a selection committee assembled by the Department of Environmental Studies.

Residence in the EcoHouse: presents an opportunity for students to collectively explore ideas of sustainable living and home energy efficiency in an intimate setting. offers the chance to apply and evaluate the meaning and implications of sustainable living; residents may explore both conventional and unconventional approaches while periodically reflecting on the experience. is a privilege and includes active participation and development of current and future activities. This project will only be a meaningful and beneficial experience and have a significant positive impact if students commit to the goals and activities of the house. LIVING AGREEMENT FOR THE HOUSE 1) Residents should work to establish a community and be considerate of others concerns and needs. Interactions that promote good faith and goodwill are central to the mission of the house and highly encouraged. 2) Residents must work together to maintain household cleanliness (recycling, trash, shoveling snow from steps and walks, dishes) in addition to maintaining the worm compost bin. Some maintenance of landscaping may be needed as well. The house is intended as a model, and residents agree to host occasional tours in the house, in consultation with the EcoHouse Advisory Board. 3) Residents should collaborate on communal meals several times a week (times TBD). 4) Residents must write a reflection at the end of every semester lived in the house, to be added to the house journal for future students. 5) Residents will help plan and host several house events (2-3) every semester. 6) Residents are highly encouraged to reflect upon EcoHouse requirements and to propose amendments on an as-needed basis to the EcoHouse Adviser.
