Details DEFINE STORY ADRIENNE BROWN PHOTOGRAPHY JASON HARTOG DESIGN It s easy to dream up all the details you want to incorporate in your someday house, especially when you own a piece of land you intend to build on. But when someday finally arrives, executing all those elements can be a different story. Tackling the building project for the home they had been dreaming of for years meant finding a builder who pays as much attention to detail as they do. The owners considered every detail in this home, says Erica Carolus, Project Co-ordinator at Sutcliffe Homes. And that s why they wanted to work with Sutcliffe Homes and Sutcliffe Kitchens to begin with they knew the family of companies to be equally detailoriented, and would be a good match. Every room is carefully curated, from custom furniture to coffered ceilings and hundreds of pieces of hardware carefully selected for their specific locations. Bigelow Flooring installed the appropriate tile, hardwood and carpeting to suit each space, chosen with the help of Jamie McLaughlin Design. BOTTOM RIGHT: The twopiece main floor powder room is one of six bathrooms, all unique with a different feel and look. This is a place where our family can hang out and enjoy each other, says Linda. We have a large family. They all live nearby and visit often. Our house is the central gathering place for family and their friends. Features like heated floors throughout (including in the lanai) and ICF Block foundation make this a very comfortable home. While the whole home is inviting and comfortable, including a retreat-like loft area with a kitchenette, in addition to spare bedrooms upstairs and down, the basement space was specifically intended for entertaining. The walk-out is full of light and is an ideal party space, with a games area, bar, fireplace and, the pièce de résistance, a home theatre. Station Earth designed and installed the theatre, which features 10 reclining leather seats, a large screen and a ceiling that looks like the night sky. They also took care of all of the entertainment, communication, sound and security systems. The basement also features a second laundry room, two full baths and fitness space. Our lower level is designed to be very open to allow a friendly entertaining area where people can be together but doing different things, says Linda. She and husband Steve regularly host parties with lots of games, as well as movie nights. The six bathrooms are all unique. We wanted every bathroom to have a different feel and look, says Linda. They designed each one based on its function and location, while still keeping the overall flow of the home in mind. Most have custom granite counters and custom cabinetry created by Sutcliffe Kitchens. The master bath design took a while to choose because we wanted it to be very special, says Linda. The copper in other places of the house, like the kitchen, transitioned to the gold in the master bath. She fell in love with a gold vanity, and had the ceiling above the soaker tub painted gold to bring the room together. Not only beautiful, the master bath is also high-tech and functional, as is the rest of this smart home. If they need to check the news while they re getting ready in the morning, they can turn on a television that displays in the mirror above the built-in vanity. Their huge walk-in slate shower has a rain showerhead, body jets and two other showerheads, each built in exactly Linda and Steve s heights. Outside, the lanai is a favourite space. (back-to-back with the fireplace in the great room both by Truwall Masonry and Bast Home Comfort), and can be entirely enclosed with automatic screens (by Phantom Screens) at the touch of a button. It s an incredible way to bring the outdoors in, says Carolus. Heritage Stoneworks installed landscaping, designed by Susan Peister Landscaping, and Gardens of Grandeur planted the beautiful gardens. For their outdoor dining table, the owners had Paul Lemiski from Canadian Woodworks create a custom piece from old beams. Paul also custom-made the kitchen table to complement the server island and wine-room door, says Linda. The main-floor wine room houses vintages the owners have collected on their travels. It has everything they need to host their very own tastings in a rustic setting and is right at hand just off the kitchen. It s finished with river-rock flooring and ledgerock on the walls. The door was custom-made by Homestead Woodworks. The large kitchen is a natural gathering place, too. With two islands and a table large enough for the whole family (although there is also a formal dining room at the front of the home) there is plenty of space for gatherings. Station Earth designed and installed the theatre, which features 10 reclining leather seats, a large screen and a ceiling that looks like the night sky. A casual living space is located on the far end of the kitchen. Huge windows by Bavarian Window Works look out onto the expansive yard. The master bedroom and home office are also located on the main floor, on the opposite side of the great room and foyer from the kitchen and living spaces. The open concept is important, says Linda, for people to be able to communicate easily, be together and enjoy laughter. We wanted to plan for the future with key elements on the main floor, while also maintaining the desire to entertain family and friends. With the help of Sutcliffe Homes, the owners were able to achieve all of these goals. Their company philosophy of customer service is evident in all areas of their work, says Linda, whose someday home is now her permanent residence.
