Learning Outcomes 1. Define hazardous materials. 2. Identify the components of a SDS.
Learning Outcomes 1. What is Hazardous Materials (Hazmat) A hazardous material is any item or agent (biological, chemical, radiological, and/or physical), which has the potential to cause harm to humans, animals, or the environment, either by itself or through interaction with other factors
Learning Objective The goal of this presentation is to; Minimize and Prevent claims of personal injury, liability and property damage, associated with improper Use, Storage and Disposal of Hazardous Materials Examples of Hazardous Materials Fuel, Chemicals used for Lawns, Pools, Cleaning, Pesticides etc.
Learning Objective Flammable and Combustible Materials (Generally speaking flammable/combustible materials will ignite and burn easily or will add appreciable heat to an ambient fire) Flammable Materials: LP Gas, Oil, Gasoline, paint thinner, lighter fluid, aerosol cans, turpentine, some cleansing agents and chlorine if mixed with other chemicals. Combustible Materials: Fuel, Oil, Paint Kerosene, sawdust and cleansing agents.
General Process General Process, Regulations and Requirements for Hazardous Materials 1. Recognize Hazardous Materials 2. Research and Develop Polies and Procedures for Hazardous Materials 3. Utilize State and Local Agencies for Inspections and Education. 4. Adhere to Proper, Use, Storage, Disposal of Hazardous Materials
Recognize Hazardous Materials Know your Hazardous Materials - Flammable - Combustible - Corrosive - Explosive - Bio-Hazardous Materials - Compressed Gasses
Research and Develop Polices & Procedures - Identify all Processes that utilize hazardous materials in the workplace. *All building and all locations - Maintenance and Custodial Operations Procedure Manuals for those Handling and Storing Hazardous Materials
Research and Develop Polices & Procedures ** Use MSDS Sheet for Research and Development Material Safety Data Sheets A Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) is a document that contains information on the potential health effects of exposure to chemicals, or other potentially dangerous substances, and on safe working procedures when handling chemical products.
Research and Develop Polices & Procedures - There are 16 Sections to a MSDS sheet, the sections Range from, - Identification / Hazards / First Aid Measures / Fire Fighting Measures / Handling / Storage / Disposal /Transport - MSDS sheets can be found by the companies that manufacture hazardous materials or by doing a simple Google Search. - Example Search: Clorox MSDS - The MSDS sheet will cover Proper Use, Storage and Disposal of Hazardous Materials.
Utilize State & Local Agencies for Inspections and Education Utilize State and Local Agencies for Inspections and education. Example, Local Fire Marshall, Local EPA office, Department of Health - Implement Routine and Preventative Inspections 1. Identify Concerns 2. Rectify those concerns. 3. Develop and Maintain a Self Inspection Check List 4. Develop and Maintain a Chain of Custody form for all Hazardous Materials
Utilize State & Local Agencies for Inspections and Education Self-Inspection Check List
Utilize State & Local Agencies for Inspections and Education
Utilize State & Local Agencies for Inspections and Education Preventative Inspections 1. Include Inventory of all hazardous materials on site. 2. Fire extinguisher training, maintenance and quarterly inspections. This is usually done by a certified company or your local fire dept. 3. Fires Extinguishers should be accessible and in good working order and located where there is potential for fire.
Utilize State & Local Agencies for Inspections and Education Ensure the correct fire extinguishers are selected and provided for the types of materials in areas where they are to be used. 1. Class A Ordinary Combustible Material fires. 2. Class B Flammable Liquid, gas or grease fire.. 3. Class C Energized-electrical equipment fires.
Use, Storage, Containment and Disposal of Hazardous Materials - Ensure that all Hazardous Materials are stored in the appropriate containers and at the appropriate temperatures. - Ensure that all Flammable and Combustible materials are properly stored. Flammable and Combustible materials should be stored in a locked metal container (box) and not stored with in the main building. And kept out of reach of the General public. - Hazardous Materials should be disposed of properly. - Products that can catch fire, react, or explode under certain circumstances, or that are corrosive or toxic as household hazardous waste. Products, such as paints, cleaners, oils, batteries, and pesticides can contain hazardous ingredients and require special care when you dispose of them
Proper Handling and Use ** Develop and Implement a PPE Policy. PPE Personal Protective Equipment - Should Apply to ALL Employees Examples of PPE: Gloves, Safety Glasses, Masks and respirators, boots, shoe covers, coveralls. Bio-hazard sharps containers, Eye Wash Stations.
Emergency Procedures A Emergency Procedure Manual should be created & kept in a 3 ring binder and accessible to all staff. The Manual should contain: 1. Emergency Contact Numbers, Ex: Fire Dept., Poison Control. Etc. 2. Procedures, for handling Spills, Fires, Explosion, Medical situations. 3. Training for all employees on Emergency Procedures upon hire all employees should read and acknowledge that they read the emergency procedure manual.
Incident Reporting Implement a Incident reporting procedure 1. Create an Incident Report form, Copies of the form should be kept in the Emergency Procedure Manual 2. All Incidents and accidents involving employees and non employees should be reported. 3. The Incident Report form should include, Name, Contact, information and as much detail as the incident as possible. And any medical and follow up taken or needed. 4. The forms should be kept on file a minimum of 3 years.
Learning Outcomes Review Define hazardous materials. Identify the components of a SDS.
