PIEO Hawks attended the Government Social Media Conference in Nashville on Monday, April 1 st through Friday, April 5 th. On Tuesday, April 2 nd as part of our accreditation process, the VRFA hosted a community stakeholders meeting to gain input on community expectations. AFM Rogers attended the NW Investigator meeting on Tuesday, April 2 nd. The Weekly Staff Meeting was held on Tuesday, April 2 nd at Station 31. PIEs Martin and Conrad attended the High School Career Conference at The Outlet Collection on Tuesday, April 2 nd. The Leadership Committee Meeting was held on Wednesday, April 3 rd at Station 31. On Wednesday, April 3 rd FM Stewart and AFM Rogers attended the Regional Fire Investigation meeting in Kent. Chief Swearingen, DC Olson and BC Thompson conducted interviews on Wednesday, April 3 rd for the open battalion chief position as a result of recent promotions. 1

This Week The Civil Service Commission will hold their monthly meeting on Tuesday, April 9 th at Auburn City Hall. The Finance Committee and Board of Governance will hold their monthly meetings on Tuesday, April 9 th at Headquarters Station 31. FM Stewart will host a meeting of regional fire investigators to discuss feasibility of a regional task force on Tuesday, April 9 th at Station 35. The Uniform Committee will meet on Tuesday, April 9 th at Station 31. DC Larberg, BC Connell and Captain Kuzaro will meet with their counterparts at South King Fire & Rescue to discuss matters of mutual interest pertaining to the Community Medical Technician (CMT) program, on Wednesday, April 10 th. Command staff will hold their monthly meeting on Thursday, April 11 th at Headquarters Station 31. 911 Requests for Services / Customer Service Aid Call: (Auburn) On Monday, April 1 st at 1:09 p.m., firefighters responded to a brush fire. The fire was located over a steep hillside which required crews to hike a quarter of a mile up river to access the fire and attain full extinguishment. Motor Vehicle Accident: (Lea Hill) On Tuesday, April 2 nd at 9:16 a.m., firefighters responded to a single car accident. The vehicle crashed into a fence, causing a 2 inch diameter galvanized pipe to pierce through the windshield, and the front passenger seat, narrowly missing a toddler who was in a child seat behind the passenger seat. There were no injuries. Aid Call: (Auburn) On Wednesday, April 3 rd at 2:48 p.m., firefighters responded to an adult female who was having seizure activity. The patient was evaluated by firefighters and King County Medics. The patient was transported to MultiCare Auburn Medical Center (MAMC) by private ambulance. Aid Call: (South Auburn) On Thursday, April 4 th at 11:30 a.m., firefighters responded to an elderly male showing signs of a stroke. Firefighters quickly evaluated him and transported him to MAMC for further treatment. 2

Aid Call: (Lakeland Hills) On Friday, April 5 th at 2:30 a.m., firefighters and King County Medics responded to an ill infant CPR in progress. Personnel arrived and found an ill infant that was having febrile seizures and no CPR. King County Medics and fire personnel treated the patient and a private ambulance transported her to Mary Bridge Hospital. Residential House Fire: (Auburn) On Saturday, April 6 th at 8:45 p.m., firefighters responded to a house fire in the 1900 block of R Street. Flames were coming from the front deck extending into living space. The fire was held at bay by residential home fire sprinklers. Four adults and two children were displaced. No injuries to citizens or firefighters. The fire is under investigation by VRFA fire investigators. Burn Complaint: (Pacific) On Sunday, April 7 th at 7:47 p.m., VRFA firefighters along with South King Fire & Rescue were called to a smoke investigation. A homeowner was burning yard waste in their fire pit. Crews educated the homeowner that this was not allowed and assisted him in extinguishing the fire with a garden hose. Training Division Activities Year 2018 2019 Weekly 301 330 Year to Date 5,123 3,595 Block #2 Training Blue Card Incident Management: Block training is where crews from multiple agencies all report to a central location and get to participate in group training. In this block battalion chiefs, captains and firefighters attended Blue Card Continuing Education training at South King Fire & Rescue training center. These fire simulations are drills designed to practice and enhance communication and incident management skills that take place on the fireground. They are required as part of the Blue Card Command and Control program. The simulation for this quarter deals with fires in strip malls. South King County Fire Training Consortium Swift Water Technician Course: The SKCFTC Swiftwater Technician 1 course is designed to train personnel who work near, in, and on fast-moving water in the knowledge and skills needed to identify hazards, self-rescue, and rescue others in a swiftwater or flood environment. This is including but is not limited to, in-water Go rescues and rope techniques. Day 1 of the class was held at Puget Sound Regional Fire Authority Station 74 and the rest was held on location at Kanaskat-Palmer State Park. 3

Fire Marshal s Office Business Fire & Life Safety Inspections: Total Annual Fire & Life Safety Inspections completed this week: 54 Inspections completed by Certified Fire Inspectors this week: 6 Inspections completed by Company Level staff this week: 44 New Business Licenses entered into the system: 3 Business Re-inspections completed: 1 Pre-Application Reviews: Pre-Application Reviews completed this week: 1 Construction Inspections: Construction Inspections completed this week: 7 Land Use & Plan Reviews: Land Use Plan Reviews completed this week: 6 Construction Plan Reviews completed this week: 11 Other: AFM Upton & DFM Homan met with Emerald Downs management and facilities staff along with Muckleshoot Tribal Safety Director on Thursday April 4 to discuss and schedule the 2019 annual fire safety inspection of the race track prior to opening day. Discussion topics included the tracks aging fire protection equipment and establishing a written plan to address reoccurring deficiencies of this equipment. FMO Investigation Staff attended a workgroup meeting in Kent to discuss future plans for a regional approach to Fire Investigations. Other Zone 3 attendees included Puget Sound Regional Fire, South King Fire & Rescue, Renton RFA, Tukwila Fire, Enumclaw, and King County Sheriff s Office. Fire Investigations: On Saturday, April 6 th, an accidental fire occurred in the 1800 block of 21 st Ct SE in the City of Auburn. The fire occurred on the exterior of the home due to an outdoor cooking appliance. The home sustained very little interior involvement due to a residential sprinkler system. Dollar loss is estimated at $90,000 mostly due to water damage. 4

Public Education PIE Specialists Martin and Conrad staffed a booth at the Auburn Chamber of Commerce High School Career Conference held at the Outlet Collection. They shared information regarding careers at the Valley Regional Fire Authority. A child car seat was inspected for an Auburn mother. The mom was instructed in how to install the seat properly and adjust it for her child. PIEO staff assisted in planning a recognition ceremony for Auburn School District employees who performed life-saving CPR. The Elementary School Fire & Life Safety program continued with classes taught at Chinook and Gildo Rey Elementary. PIEO Terhune assisted in planning and attended a workshop hosted by the King County and State Fire and Life Safety Educators groups. The workshop was titled The Way We Work and instructed by Cynthia Tobias. PIEO Hawks attended a Government Social Media Conference in Tennessee. PIO duties were completed for a motorcycle crash, brush fire, residential fire and a motor vehicle collision. Posts were made to Social Media regarding fires, motorcycle and car crash and an accreditation survey. Planning and Logistics P&L received 2 apparatus and 5 facility/small tool maintenance requests. BC Connell met with Contractors this week to get proposals for the station 31 training room upgrades. Captain Freed attended a curriculum-planning meeting for the new regional First Aid program. Captain Freed attended a Community Stakeholders Meeting on Accreditation. Accreditation process continues. 5
