BAY AREA BONSAI SOCIETY May 2013 Topic: BONSAI WORKSHOP Date: May 8, 2013 Time: 7:00-9:00 P.M. Place: Brown County Senior Center 300 S. Adams Street Green Bay, WI. It is time to get our hands dirty, while styling or restyling our bonsai or potential bonsai material. Members will bring their LABELLED tools, moss, pots and boulders. If you don t have a tree to work on, you can either help a fellow member or purchase a small nana procumbans juniper at the meeting. Soil and wire will be provided. Tropicals can be styled, but not repotted at this time. Deciduous trees in leaf cannot be repotted now. This is the last chance you have to buy tools. Please welcome and assist the latest beginner bonsai class graduates. This is a great time to start shopping for trees at your local nurseries or discount stores. Let the group know about any deals or gems that you have run across. The public is invited to attend and observe. BEGINNER BONSAI CLASSES Thanks to the following members who assisted with the beginner classes taught by Sandra Keller: Tina Chappell, Ellen Mathu, James Gumtow and Mary Scheld,

Protect these trees from winds and hot sun. This is a great month for collecting in the wild. When digging deciduous, make sure not to collect trees that are in leaf. Work on them only when leafless in the Spring or Fall. After collecting, pot them up in large containers or plant in the ground to recuperate from the dig. Always cut back some of the tree after digging. May is a good month for repotting evergreens. Don t fertilize newly potted trees or expose them to frost. Deciduous trees can be fertilized with low nitrogen fertilizer while evergreens can have ½ strength 20-20-20. Check trees for pests and disease. Remove last year s wires.
News From the President BABS members: FREE AT LAST!! Winter has finally released its grip on us. Time to get to work. I was finally able to bring my trees out of the garage. Looks like they all survived the long winter. Buds are popping and quince flowers are already open and looking great. I picked up some training pots earlier this year. Excited to get dirty. Time for some repotting. Speaking of repotting, I had a recent conversation with the VP Ellen about bonsai soil. We thought it might be interesting to have an informal soil type workshop. Where members can take a look at soil components first hand. Exchange ideas and recipes. Test sifting tools and maybe even leave with some bonsai soil of their own. I would not be able to host such and event as I am in the middle of packing to move to a new house my wife and I just bought. So if anyone is interested in the soil workshop and or hosting the soil workshop (it s a messy task so outdoors is key) please let myself or Ellen know and we will try to get this rolling. Thanks to those who volunteered to help with the Bonsai Class last month. I was able to assist Sandra in the final Bonsai Class and workshop. It looks like we will have some new members from the class. It s nice to see the enthusiasm for bonsai. Again, I would like to let everyone know that I am open to any ideas, thoughts, comments or concerns. Get ahold of me with any of the above. My cell is 920-747-0073, email is jibboo36@ hotmail.com See you at the May meeting. Bonsai!! James Gumtow
