Community Newsletter Week of April 8-12, 2019 A publication of the City of Dodge City Public Information Office 1. This past weekend the Dodge City Fire Department responded to a structure fire that was caused by clothing that was ignited while in a clothes dryer. The home received significant damage from the fire. This type of fire is relatively common in Dodge City as well as around the nation. Here are a few tips that can be used to help limit the risk of fire while drying laundry: Do not use the dryer without a lint filter. Make sure you clean the lint filter before or after each load of laundry. Remove lint that has collected around the drum. Rigid or flexible metal venting material should be used to sustain proper air flow and drying time. Make sure the air exhaust vent pipe is not restricted, and the outdoor vent flap will open when the dryer is operating. Once a year, or more often if you notice that it is taking longer than usual for your clothes to dry, clean lint out of the vent pipe or have a dryer lint removal service do it for you. Do not dry gloves or materials that have been soaked in gasoline, animal fats or any flammable or combustible liquids. Keep dryers in good working order. Gas dryers should be inspected by a qualified professional to make sure that the gas line and connection are intact and free of leaks. Make sure the right plug and outlet are used and that the machine is connected properly. Follow the manufacturer s operating instructions and don t overload your dryer. Turn the dryer off if you leave home or when you go to bed. If a fire does occur inside the drum of the dryer, leave the burning clothing inside of the dryer, close the door, get out of the house and call 911. 2. Staff attended the progress meeting for the Boot Hill Museum expansion project on Tuesday this week. The contractors are continuing on some final details with underground work and anticipate to pour the concrete slab for the new building the first week in May.

3. Administrative leaders from the City of Dodge City, Dodge City Community College, Ford County and USD 443 participated in an interview on how the various entities are working together to make Dodge City the best place to be. This interview will be available soon on Channel 8 as well as Dodgecity.org. Watch our Facebook page and the newsletter for the release date. 4. The Tourism Task Force held its quarterly meeting this week. The meeting featured reports from the City Manager, Cherise Tieben, and Assistant City Manager, Melissa McCoy, on projects including progress with STAR Bonds and the sales tax fund. Other updates were from the Mariah Fund, Ford County Historical Society, Main Street Dodge City, and the Dodge City Convention and Visitor s Bureau. 5. Felis Consulting met with City Staff on Thursday and Friday on the Zoo Master Plan. Next, staff will be presenting four different concepts to the community for their feedback, and the next survey on the project will roll out next week. A presentation will also be made to the City Commission on Monday about this next phase of the project. Check out the City Facebook page, https://www. facebook.com/cityofdodgecity/, and CoUrbanize, https://courb.co/wpzooplan, for updates and more information. 6. With unseasonably cold weather hitting the area and potential snow in the forecast, Saturday s racing action at Dodge City Raceway Park in Southwest Kansas has been canceled. The Seventh Annual Modified Stampede originally set for this Saturday night, April 13, will now take place during DCRP s next event on Saturday night, April 27. The complete slate of 2019 events at DCRP is available at https://www.dodgecityraceway.com/schedule/. 7. Vice Mayor Joyce Warshaw and the Dodge City Drovers welcomed participants at the 2019 Joint Kansas Chapter Meeting, HOA Annual Business Meeting, and Combined Education Conference to Dodge City on Thursday. The City s Development Services Department and Convention and Visitor s Bureau helped with the organization for the conference that was held at the Boot Hill Casino and Resort Conference Center. In addition, attendees took some fun tours and participated in activities in the community. The Drovers are a group of volunteers who work with the Convention & Visitors Bureau to extend a western welcome to visitors to Dodge City. If you'd like to know more about the Drovers group, please send an email to cvb@dodgecity.org or call (620) 225-8186. 8. The 10% season pass sale is in full swing for the Long Branch Lagoon. To purchase your pass visit www.lblagoon.com. 9. Director Jan Stevens of the Dodge City Convention and Visitors Bureau was in Washington DC this week for the U.S. Travel Association Destination Capitol Hill.
