Introduction to Shutters Interior shutters or plantation shutters as they are sometimes referred to offer a stylish and functional window dressing option for many properties. From a focal point at your property to energy saving, shutters can provide an interior design solution. With the increase in popularity of shutters and a number of suppliers we believe it is important the customer has a basic understanding of the product and is able to see the difference in quality, craftsmanship and level of detail to achieve a quality product at a sensible price. Unlike the majority of suppliers we only offer one wood type. We believe if we have identified the best wood solution why offer our customer other types of wood that are not suitable. We prefer to look at different fixing systems and the small but very important details other suppliers wish not to speak about but make a real difference. We believe these details should reflect the difference in price and not quality of wood that in most instances is not suitable. We hope the booklet introduces you to shutters and answers all your questions. Shutter Styles Each window is different both in size and style and is why we offer a number of styles to meet your requirements. All shutters are hand crafted to fit perfectly in your window. TIER ON TIER WITH OVERLAP The overlap prevents light coming through area where panels meet This traditional shutter can be installed for most windows to cover the whole area. This traditional shutter is usually installed where only one panel is required but is over 1300 mm tall. Alternatively the divider can be designed to match up with the window frames. The cafe shutter only has the shutter at the bottom half of the window so you can keep privacy while letting light into the room or enjoy the view. 4 Shutter Styles

TIER ON TIER NO OVERLAP TIER ON TIER WITH OVERLAP This is the traditional tier on tier style giving full flexibility by allowing selected panels to be opened or closed to give privacy or let light in as required. The overlap option has the added benefit of preventing light from coming through the area where the panels meet. Please note however you will have to open the top panel first with this option. Panel System To complete the range we offer three panel systems each having their own advantages of covering large areas while maintaining ease of operation. Please note the folding panels will project out 90 degrees into the room and the sliding panel will always cover part of the window or wall. Bay window shutter specialists In many instances individuals buy a property due to its unique features like bay windows. Shutters traditionally have been installed in bay windows using the standard frames and adapted to fit as best as possible. Unfortunately the walls and structures are not straight or at the same angle resulting in not always being able to achieve a neat and even finish. We offer a unique bay pole system that will ensure joining of the panels will always give a neat and even finish. By using a pole the two side frames either side are designed to match the profile giving flexibility for any angle. Shutters Styles 7

Shutter Models - Finestra The Finestra range is the top of the range product but also our most popular. It is available in a variety of designs, all with the extra detail and standard you would expect from a quality product. There are a wide range of frame types to fit most window requirements including the unique bay pole system. The frames have a rubber seal fitted in a rebate to reduce light into the room and ensure a smooth soft closure. The rubber seal also has one side of the magnet fitted to it in a concealed way. The frame has been designed with removable cover strips to hide any screw fittings or for a decorative architrave that fits into the recess at the side of the frame. 8 Shutters Models

Shutter Models - Shutter Life The Shutter Life has only one frame system but various options for fitting. The door edge has a rebate containing a rubber seal to reduce light into the room. The inner frame has a metal ring fixed as apart of the magnet to fasten the closure of the panel. The frame front has been designed to allow a face architrave to be fitted into a recess and achieve a decorative finish. 10 Shutters Models

Shutter Models - Classic The Classic shutter is our entry point in the range of shutters. This shutter design is similar to other products from other suppliers but with the big advantage of a higher quality wood. The tilt rod is stapled to the slats in the centre of the panel which restricts the view out. The inner frame has a metal ring fixed as part of the magnet to fasten the closure of the panel. Shutter Models - Evolution The Evolution is a wood shutter with a very innovative window design. When the slats are in the closed position the shutter will give a completely flat look and not let light into the room due to the design of the slats. The side frame has been hand crafted to allow the side tilt wand to fit flush with the frame. 12 Shutters Models

The Difference is in the Detail WOOD TYPES Our range of shutters are hand crafted from Abachi wood. This hard wearing wood is a perfect choice for manufacturing shutters with a high resistance to warping and twisting. The wood is extremely light so ideal for all shutter sizes unlike MDF or other inferior woods available today. The Abachi wood is sourced in South Africa from managed plantations helping to preserve the forest on the planet. HAND CRAFTED We are proud to say every one of our shutters is individually hand crafted by highly skilled joiners in a workshop in Valencia. Shutters are often purchased to compliment a window, look elegant but also to control the light and privacy in your room. It is extremely important that quality hinges and tilt rod systems are chosen to ensure your shutters give long lasting performance. The Difference is in the Detail HINGES Our traditional butt hinge is routed into the edge of the panel. The hinge has a solid section of metal each side giving greater strength and obtaining a good fixing without twisting. A lot of shutters are supplied with one flat section of steel which is punched to form a hinge giving potential issues with twisting and panels dropping. Our Zenus hinge is totally enclosed within the panel. This hinge type allows us to supply large panels without the risk of them dropping. The Difference is in the Detail 15

TILT WANDS Tilt wands are used for opening and closing the slats to the desired position for allowing natural light into the room or to retain privacy with light coming into the room. Traditionally tilt wands are stapled to the centre of the panel with pins that can cause rattling. Our classic model is of this design to allow you to match other shutters you may already have. Otherwise all our shutters models have a tilt wand mounted to one side of the panel. With the wand at the side we screw each slat to the wand giving a more solid operation and longevity. For those customers requiring a clear looking shutter face we can provide the tilt wand on the back. With this design you will open and shut the slat by pushing one. Unfortunately most people pull the slat to open the panel which is not recommended. PANEL KNOBS Panel knobs create a stylish look and give ease for opening and closing a shutter panel. The knobs are available in brass or silver SLAT DESIGN Our attention to detail allows a choice of shaped slats to meet your individual shutter design and slat width. The Difference is in the Detail CHOICE OF FINISH The choice of colour is important but different for each individual. From matching the colour of walls or surrounding timber architraves to standing out as a feature in a room or simply to reflect as much light as possible into the room. TRIMS AND ARCHITRAVES We offer a choice of decorative architraves and trims to finish off the shutter in style. The type on offer will depend on the type of fitting that is chosen. The trims and architraves also cover the gaps that are observed after the shutter has been installed due to the walls not being true and in line. Most companies fill these gaps with a mastic or other filler product which will discolour in time. 18 The Difference is in the Detail

The height of a panel is restricted by the number of dividers. Typically the first divider is installed at 1300mm. The maximum height with one divider is 2400 and 3000mm with two dividers. Fitting Details The way the shutters are fitted can make and enormous difference to the way they look and how they are operated. In general there are three fitting types FLUSH INSTALLATION REBATE INSTALLATION SURFACE INSTALLATION Many installations can be carried out with only two or three frame sides instead of the usual four sides. FLUSH INSTALLATIONS The flush fitting allows the shutter to be installed at the front of the recess and allows the panels to be opened back onto the wall. REBATE INSTALLATION The rebate installation allows the shutter to be fitted inside the recess with decorative trim to cover gaps. WINDOW WINDOW 20 Fitting Details SURFACE INSTALLATIONS The surface installation allows the shutter to be a focal point of the room whilst retaining the window sill. WINDOW

Design, Installation and Aftercare Design Choosing the correct style and design layout is essential to achieve the finish you require. We offer a full design service allowing you to discuss with our experts all your thoughts and requirements. It is most important however before we offer detailed advice we fully understand from you: Why do you want shutters? What do you want to achieve? How will you operate the shutters? DESIGN INSTALLATION The design process will cover the following Options and type of system Layout of shutters to match the window configuration Preferred size of slats Colour of shutters Architrave or trim options In our view we will then discuss the most important aspect of how the shutters will be fitted to your window surrounds. Naturally we will bring a working model for you to look at in the window and to see the quality and detail but we will also bring actual frame section blocks and architrave so you fully understand how the shutter is fitted. AFTER CARE 22 Design, Installation and After Care

Measure and Installation Once the design, model and style have been agreed we shall arrange for the windows to be accurately measured. A detailed measurement is required to achieve a good shutter installation and gives you, the customer, a final chance to ask any further questions. The installation is carried out by qualified fitters who fully understand the manufacturing of the shutter as well as general building construction so you get a perfect fitted shutter everytime. The fitters will treat your property as if it was their own and not as a building site including the use of dust sheets and cleaning up afterwards. Aftercare Shutters generally do not require very much aftercare, as a general guide we would suggest: Clean with a damp soft cloth Tilt slats regularly If you have sliding panels or folding panels ensure the guides are free from dust for easy operation. When Bi-Folding panels are installed remember to close the slats to prevent damage. One of our many points of difference is we supply a couple of spare slats and a small pot of touch up paint or stain for you to touch in any marks that you may get throughout the lifetime of the shutter.
