President's Message... Dredgings from the Pond Our last meeting was very enjoyable. Sorry so many of you missed it, but this is a busy time of year. Our last two meetings were poorly attended, leading old timers to speculate about the viability of our club. My term as president is soon to be over and we are hoping there will be a continuation of leadership; however, that will be decided by you, our members. I have also wondered if there are topics you would like to hear. We had a great turn-out for our Jumbo Tosai meeting at Sunset Koi. If you have ideas or topics, we'd love to hear them. Okay, enough of that, back to koi. My ponds have been too warm in this hot weather. I have noticed diminished appetites in the hot spells and watched hungry fish when the temperature dropped. I continue to learn about my koi by noting the daily water temperature and observing my fish's appetite. I don't pay as much attention to my front pond, but the show koi in my back pond are getting my full attention. They have grown considerably since April. I have been striving for growth in their nutrition by feeding them a highprotein growth food. More recently I have introduced color food to their diet to enrich the reds. By early September I plan to slow their eating and emphasize food that will help the white skin. All this is being done in preparation for the Fresno Koi Show on September 25 th. Whether you enjoy show koi or a beautiful water garden with pond fish, we all are concerned for the health of these beautiful living jewels. Happy Koi Keeping, -John Shasta Koi & Water Garden Club August 2015 Page 2 of 7

Club News... Dear Club Members, Japan Trip John Watkins, is planning a koi-hunting trip to Japan in November. So, John, knowing you will be seeing koi we can only imagine, we want all kinds of pictures!!! Yes, lots and lots of them, please. We'd also love to hear about your experiences as you go along. Thanks for thinking of us! October Auction Due to the heat and water rationing currently in place, Karlene and Terry Stoker are going to pass on having the auction at their home in October. We would like to hear from club members with koi they would like to sell. This will give us an idea of the interest in having an auction and possibly moving the auction to another locale. Each tank in the auction holds approximately 400 to 500 gallons. This is a consideration when we have six to eight tanks. For many reasons we will not have an optional tank for goldfish. Sorry. If it is decided not to have an auction and you would like to sell or give koi away, the newsletter would be glad to help you find others in the club who are interested in your fish. If you find yourself needing to give fish away, please take some time to photograph the specific fish. We have options, so lets be creative. Updates on the auction decisions will be in the September newsletter. Meeting attendance Attendance at the monthly club meetings has dwindled considerably. There are many reasons for this, but it begs the question of where the club will be going into 2016. We will be looking for board members to include a new President, Vice- President, Secretary, Treasurer, member-at-large as well as a newsletter editor. All of these positions must be filled by the end of 2015 to be announced at the Christmas party in December. If interest has dwindled, our beloved club will be in jeopardy. Please consider volunteering for one of these positions and take us into 2016. Shasta Koi & Water Garden Club August 2015 Page 3 of 7

CLUB NEWS (Continued) September Barbecue Bob and Penny Hart have graciously agreed to host the barbecue at their home on September 19, 2015. The club will supply and pay for the meat and Bob will man the grill. Thank you Bob! All side dishes will be provided by club members. A sign-up sheet will be sent around at the next meeting. If you do not attend the August meeting, please contact Penny Hart at 547-3620 to keep her updated about the various dishes being proposed. Table decorations will also be provided by club members. Please let Penny know if you are interested in providing the decorations for your table. Non-alcoholic beverages will be made available, however, you are welcome to bring beer or wine if you wish. <:{{{{{>< Shasta Koi & Water Garden Club August 2015 Page 4 of 7

Meeting Minutes... SHASTA KOI & WATER GARDEN CLUB Saturday, July 18, 2015 The regular meeting was held at the home of John Watkins. The meeting was called to order by President Watkins with eight club members in attendance. MINUTES: We did not hold a club meeting in June. TREASURER'S REPORT: Our treasurer was on vacation and no report was given. PROGRAM: Due to the light attendance at this time, a social atmosphere was in order. John has a lovely home on the Sacramento River and a spectacular collection of koi. Everyone enjoyed talking and viewing his front pond which sits at the entrance to his home. The front pond contains large mature koi, some of which we recognized had been winners at the 2014 Shasta Koi Show. We moved to the back of the home which overlooks the scenic river. We spent another good amount of time enjoying the back pond which is home to John's current crop of show koi. We eventually sat in the living room where John shared his experiences at the most recent AKCA Wet Lab which was held in Sacramento in June. After a brief discussion of caring for koi in the current water crisis and some refreshments, the meeting adjourned. <:{{{{{>< Shasta Koi & Water Garden Club August 2015 Page 5 of 7
