SECTION 283111 FIRE DETECTION AND ALARM SYSTEM PART 1 - GENERAL 1.1 RELATED DOCUMENTS A. Drawings and general provisions of the Contract, including General and Supplementary Conditions and Division 01 Specification Sections, apply to this Section. 1.2 SUMMARY A. Each school contains an existing Gamewell-FCI fire alarm system. Incorporate additional devices as shown on the Drawings into the existing systems. Modify and/or expand the existing fire alarm system as required to accommodate the existing devices. 1.3 DEFINITIONS A. LED: Light-emitting diode. B. NICET: National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies. 1.4 SYSTEM DESCRIPTION A. Noncoded, UL-certified addressable system, with multiplexed signal transmission, dedicated to fire-alarm service only. 1.5 SUBMITTALS A. General Submittal Requirements: 1. Shop Drawings shall be prepared by persons with the following qualifications: a. Trained and certified by manufacturer in fire-alarm system design. b. NICET-certified fire-alarm technician, Level III minimum. B. Product Data: For each type of product indicated. C. Shop Drawings: For fire-alarm system. Include plans, elevations, sections, details, and attachments to other work. 1. Comply with recommendations in the "Documentation" Section of the "Fundamentals of Fire Alarm Systems" Chapter in NFPA 72. 2. Include battery-size calculations. Include plans, sections, and elevations of heating, ventilating, and air-conditioning ducts, drawn to scale and coordinating installation of duct smoke detectors and access to them. Show critical dimensions that relate to placement and support of sampling tubes, detector housing, and remote status and alarm indicators. Locate detectors according to manufacturer's written recommendations. 5. Include floor plans to indicate final outlet locations showing address of each addressable device. Show size and route of cable and conduits. D. Qualification Data: For qualified Installer. E. Field quality-control reports. F. Operation and Maintenance Data: For fire-alarm systems and components to include in emergency, operation, and maintenance manuals. In addition to items specified in Section 017823 "Operation and Maintenance Data," include the following: 1. Comply with the "Records" Section of the "Inspection, Testing and Maintenance" Chapter in NFPA 72. 2. Provide "Record of Completion Documents" according to NFPA 72 article "Permanent Records" in the "Records" Section of the "Inspection, Testing and Maintenance" Chapter. 3. Provide "Maintenance, Inspection and Testing Records" according to NFPA 72 article of the same name and include the following: a. Frequency of testing of installed components. b. Frequency of inspection of installed components. c. Requirements and recommendations related to results of maintenance. d. Manufacturer's user training manuals. 4. Manufacturer's required maintenance related to system warranty requirements. 5. Abbreviated operating instructions for mounting at fire-alarm control unit. 6. Copy of NFPA 25. 1.6 QUALITY ASSURANCE A. Installer Qualifications: Personnel shall be trained and certified by manufacturer for installation of units required for this Project. B. Installer Qualifications: Installation shall be by personnel certified by NICET as fire-alarm Level III technician. C. Source Limitations for Fire-Alarm System and Components: Obtain fire-alarm system from single source from single manufacturer. Components shall be compatible with, and operate as, an extension of existing system. D. Electrical Components, Devices, and Accessories: Listed and labeled as defined in NFPA 70, by a qualified testing agency, and marked for intended location and application. PART 2 - PRODUCTS 2.1 MANUFACTURERS A. Manufacturers: Subject to compliance with requirements, provide systems by the following: 1. Gamewell-FCI; a Honeywell Company. B. Manufacturers: Subject to compliance with requirements, provide notification devices by the following: 1. Wheelock, Inc. 2.2 SYSTEMS OPERATIONAL DESCRIPTION A. Functionality of the existing system shall be maintained. Devices added to the system shall have functionality similar to existing like devices. 2.3 FIRE-ALARM CONTROL PANEL A. Existing Gamewell-FCI 7100/2D Fire Alarm Control Panel. B. Circuits: Match Style of existing signaling and initiating devices circuits. C. Batteries: Analyze system and perform battery calculations. Add additional battery capacity as required to maintain operation of system in the event of loss of normal power as required by NFPA 72. 2.4 SYSTEM SMOKE DETECTORS A. General Requirements for System Smoke Detectors: 1. Comply with UL 268; operating at 24-V dc, nominal. 2. Detectors shall be two-wire type. 3. Integral Addressable Module: Arranged to communicate detector status (normal, alarm, or trouble) to fire-alarm control unit. 4. Base Mounting: Detector and associated electronic components shall be mounted in a twist-lock module that connects to a fixed base. Provide terminals in the fixed base for connection to building wiring. 5. Self-Restoring: Detectors do not require resetting or readjustment after actuation to restore them to normal operation. 6. Integral Visual-Indicating Light: LED type indicating detector has operated and poweron status. 7. Remote Control: Unless otherwise indicated, detectors shall be analog-addressable type, individually monitored at fire-alarm control unit for calibration, sensitivity, and alarm condition and individually adjustable for sensitivity by fire-alarm control unit. a. Provide multiple levels of detection sensitivity for each sensor. B. Photoelectric Smoke Detectors: 1. Detector address shall be accessible from fire-alarm control unit and shall be able to identify the detector's location within the system and its sensitivity setting. 2. An operator at fire-alarm control unit, having the designated access level, shall be able to manually access the following for each detector: a. Primary status. b. Device type. c. Present average value. d. Present sensitivity selected. e. Sensor range (normal, dirty, etc.). 3. Product: Subject to compliance with requirements, provide the following: a. Gamewell-FCI Model No. ASD-PL2F with ADB-FL base. C. Duct Smoke Detectors: Photoelectric type complying with UL 268A. 1. Detector address shall be accessible from fire-alarm control unit and shall be able to identify the detector's location within the system and its sensitivity setting. 2. An operator at fire-alarm control unit, having the designated access level, shall be able to manually access the following for each detector: a. Primary status. b. Device type. c. Present average value. d. Present sensitivity selected. e. Sensor range (normal, dirty, etc.). 3. Weatherproof Duct Housing Enclosure: NEMA 250, Type 4X; NRTL listed for use with the supplied detector. 4. Each sensor shall have multiple levels of detection sensitivity. 5. Sampling Tubes: Design and dimensions as recommended by manufacturer for specific duct size, air velocity, and installation conditions where applied. 6. Relay Fan Shutdown: Rated to interrupt fan motor-control circuit. 7. Product: Subject to compliance with requirements, provide the following: a. Gamewell-FCI Model No. ADP. 2.5 ADDRESSABLE INTERFACE DEVICE A. Description: Microelectronic monitor module, NRTL listed for use in providing a system address for alarm-initiating devices for wired applications with normally open contacts. 1. Product: Subject to compliance with requirements, provide the following: ADDRESSABLE FIRE-ALARM SYSTEM 283111-4

a. FCI-Gamewell Model No. AMM-2F. B. Integral Relay: Capable of providing a direct signal to circuit-breaker shunt trip for power shutdown. 1. Product: Subject to compliance with requirements, provide the following: a. FCI-Gamewell Model No. AOM-2R. 2.6 WIRE AND CABLE A. Wire and cable fire alarm systems shall be UL listed and labeled as complying with NFPA 70, Article 760. B. Signaling Line Circuits: Twisted, shielded pair, NFPA 70 Article 760, Classification CI, for power-limited fire alarm signal service. UL listed as Type FPL, and complying with requirements in UL 1424 and UL 2196 for a 2-hour rating. C. Non-Power-Limited Circuits: Solid-copper conductors with 600-V rated, 75 deg C, color-coded insulation. 1. Low-Voltage Circuits: No. 16 AWG, minimum. 2. Line-Voltage Circuits: No. 12 AWG, minimum. PART 3 - EXECUTION 3.1 WIRING METHODS A. Wiring Method: Install cables in raceways meeting the requirements for branch circuit wiring as specified in Section 260533 Raceways and Boxes for Electrical Systems: in all locations except as follows: 1. Cable is not required to be installed in raceway where concealed in an accessible space above finished ceilings. Install plenum cable in environmental air spaces, including plenum ceilings. Provide sleeves as specified in Section 260500 Common Work Results for Electrical Systems where cable passes through walls. See Open-Cable Installation below. B. Wiring within Enclosures: Bundle, lace, and train cables to terminal points with no excess and without exceeding manufacturer's limitations on bending radii. Provide and use lacing bars and distribution spools. 3.2 INSTALLATION OF RACEWAYS A. Comply with requirements in Section 260533 "Raceway and Boxes for Electrical Systems" for installation of conduits and wireways. ADDRESSABLE FIRE-ALARM SYSTEM 283111-5

B. Install manufactured conduit sweeps and long-radius elbows whenever possible. 3.3 INSTALLATION OF CABLES A. Comply with NECA 1. B. General Requirements: 1. Terminate conductors; no cable shall contain unterminated elements. Make terminations only at outlets and terminals. 2. Splices, Taps, and Terminations: Arrange on numbered terminal strips in junction, pull, and outlet boxes; terminal cabinets; and equipment enclosures. 3. Secure and support cables at intervals not exceeding 60 inches (1520 mm) and not more than 6 inches (150 mm) from cabinets, boxes, fittings, outlets, racks, frames, and terminals. 4. Bundle, lace, and train conductors to terminal points without exceeding manufacturer's limitations on bending radii. Install lacing bars and distribution spools. 5. Do not install bruised, kinked, scored, deformed, or abraded cable. Do not splice cable between termination, tap, or junction points. Remove and discard cable if damaged during installation and replace it with new cable. 6. Cold-Weather Installation: Bring cable to room temperature before dereeling. Heat lamps shall not be used. C. Open-Cable Installation: 1. Utilize cable tray where available. 2. Suspend cable not in a cable tray or pathway a minimum of 6 inches (200 mm) above ceiling by cable supports not more than 60 inches (1524 mm) apart. 3. Cable shall not be run through structural members or be in contact with pipes, ducts, or other potentially damaging items. 4. Route cable parallel or perpendicular to building structure. 3.4 EQUIPMENT INSTALLATION A. Comply with NFPA 72 for installation of fire-alarm equipment. B. Smoke- or Heat-Detector Spacing: 1. Comply with NFPA 72, "Smoke-Sensing Fire Detectors" Section in the "Initiating Devices" Chapter, for smoke-detector spacing. 2. Comply with NFPA 72, "Heat-Sensing Fire Detectors" Section in the "Initiating Devices" Chapter, for heat-detector spacing. 3. Smooth ceiling spacing shall not exceed 30 feet (9 m). 4. Spacing of detectors for irregular areas, for irregular ceiling construction, and for high ceiling areas shall be determined according to Appendix A in NFPA 72. 5. HVAC: Locate detectors not closer than 5 feet (1.5 m) from air-supply diffuser or returnair opening. ADDRESSABLE FIRE-ALARM SYSTEM 283111-6

6. Lighting Fixtures: Locate detectors not closer than 12 inches (300 mm) from any part of a lighting fixture. C. Duct Smoke Detectors: Comply with NFPA 72 and NFPA 90A. Install sampling tubes so they extend the full width of duct. D. Remote Status and Alarm Indicators: Install in ceiling near each smoke detector that is not readily visible from normal viewing position. For detectors located at high ceiling areas, provide surface metal raceway as required to locate devices in visible and readily accessible wall mounted location. E. Device Location-Indicating Lights: Locate in public space near the device they monitor. 3.5 CONNECTIONS A. Make connections with an interface device to the following devices and systems. Install the interface device less than 3 feet (1 m) from the device controlled. Confirm connection. 1. Smoke dampers in air ducts of designated air-conditioning duct systems. 2. Alarm-initiating connection to activate emergency shutoffs for gas and fuel supplies. 3.6 IDENTIFICATION A. Identify system components, wiring, cabling, and terminals. Comply with requirements for identification specified in Section 260553 "Identification for Electrical Systems." 3.7 FIELD QUALITY CONTROL A. Field tests shall be witnessed by authorities having jurisdiction. B. Manufacturer's Field Service: Engage a factory-authorized service representative to inspect, test, and adjust components, assemblies, and equipment installations, including connections. C. Perform tests and inspections. 1. Manufacturer's Field Service: Engage a factory-authorized service representative to inspect components, assemblies, and equipment installations, including connections, and to assist in testing. D. Tests and Inspections: 1. Visual Inspection: Conduct visual inspection prior to testing. a. Inspection shall be based on completed Record Drawings and system documentation that is required by NFPA 72 in its "Completion Documents, Preparation" Table in the "Documentation" Section of the "Fundamentals of Fire Alarm Systems" Chapter. b. Comply with "Visual Inspection Frequencies" Table in the "Inspection" Section of the "Inspection, Testing and Maintenance" Chapter in NFPA 72; retain the "Initial/Reacceptance" column and list only the installed components. 2. System Testing: Comply with "Test Methods" Table in the "Testing" Section of the "Inspection, Testing and Maintenance" Chapter in NFPA 72. 3. Factory-authorized service representative shall prepare the "Fire Alarm System Record of Completion" in the "Documentation" Section of the "Fundamentals of Fire Alarm Systems" Chapter in NFPA 72 and the "Inspection and Testing Form" in the "Records" Section of the "Inspection, Testing and Maintenance" Chapter in NFPA 72. E. Reacceptance Testing: Perform reacceptance testing to verify the proper operation of added or replaced devices and appliances. F. Fire-alarm system will be considered defective if it does not pass tests and inspections. G. Prepare test and inspection reports. 3.8 DEMONSTRATION A. Engage a factory-authorized service representative to train Owner's maintenance personnel to adjust, operate, and maintain fire-alarm system. Operation and Maintenance Data: For refrigerant monitoring equipment and SCBA to include in emergency, operation, and maintenance manuals. 1.5 COORDINATION A. Coordinate refrigerant detection and alarm system with refrigerant contained in refrigeration equipment for compatibility. PART 2 - PRODUCTS 2.1 REFRIGERANT MONITOR A. Detection Level 1: Notify HVAC control workstation of detection in the refrigeration equipment room on a rise or fall of refrigerant concentration to this level. Start ventilation system at low speed to allow occupancy by maintenance technicians to identify leaks. Cycle blue strobe lights. B. Detection Level 2: Notify the HVAC control workstation of the detection in the refrigeration equipment room on a rise or fall of refrigerant concentration to this level. Run ventilation system at high speed on a rise in concentration to this level, and change to low speed on a reduction in concentration below this level. Operate the ventilation system at high speed for a minimum of five minutes. Cycle amber strobe lights. C. Detection Level 3: Notify the HVAC control workstation of the detection in the refrigeration equipment room on a rise or fall of refrigerant concentration to this level. Sound alarm horns and cycle red strobe lights inside and outside refrigeration equipment room. Terminate operation of any combustion-process equipment located in the refrigeration equipment room. D. Sensor Fault/Trouble: Notify HVAC control workstation of fault/trouble detection in monitor. 2.3 NOTIFICATION APPLIANCES A. Horns: Comply with UL 464; electric-vibrating-polarized type, listed by a qualified testing agency with provision for housing the operating mechanism behind a grille. Horns shall produce a sound-pressure level of 90 dba, measured 10 feet (3 m) from the horn. B. Visible Alarm Devices: Comply with UL 1971; three color xenon strobe lights, with clear or nominal white polycarbonate lens mounted on an aluminum faceplate. The words "REFRIGERANT DETECTION" printed in minimum 1/2-inch- (13-mm-) high letters on the lens. Rated light output is 75 candela. 2.4 AIR-SAMPLING TUBING A. Install air-sampling inlets, or diffusion type monitors in pits, tunnels, or trenches in machinery room that are accessible to personnel. C. Wall mount air-sampling multiple-point monitors with top of unit 48 inches floor. above finished D. Run air-sampling tubing from monitor to air-sampling point, in size as required by monitor manufacturer. Install tubing with maximum unsupported length of 36 inches (915 mm), for tubing exposed to view. Terminate air-sampling tubing at sampling point with filter recommended by monitor manufacturer. E. Purge air-sampling tubing with dry, oil-free compressed air before connecting to monitor. F. Number-code or color-code air-sampling tubing for future identification and service of airsampling multiple-point monitors. G.
