The process produces high-quality water that exceeds all state and federal drinking water standards. Operational since January 2008, this state-of-the-art water purification project can produce up to 70 million gallons (265,000 cubic meters) of high-quality water every day. This is enough water to meet the needs of nearly 600,000 residents in north and central Orange County, California. The design and construction of the GWRS was a project jointly-funded by the Orange County Water District (OCWD) and the Orange County Sanitation District (OCSD). These two public agencies have worked together for more than 30 years. They are leading the way in water recycling and providing a locally-controlled, drought-proof and reliable supply of high-quality water in an environmentally sensitive and economical manner. The tour will be conducted by Process & Plant Engineers and Operating Personnel. Space is limited, so RSVP immediately - see website (www.isaoc.org) for details. Tour is free of cost and intended for ISA members and also those interested in becoming members. Tour is being sponsored by CEMTEK. Finger foods and refreshment will be served. As a volunteer lead organization we are constantly looking for new ideas and leaders to participate in the ISA Orange County Section Board. We all have an expert opinion about what is wrong with ISA, the way it is organized, or the way it operates, and more importantly, the way it is managed. Most of us are convinced that we know a better way to organize, operate and manage more efficiently and competently. And yet, how many of us have shown the courage and conviction to join the ISA OC section board and lead this fine organization? Unfortunately, not many and the reasons are varied. If you are interested in assisting at the board level or you know of a person who would be willing to serve on the board than I encourage you to contact me at raj.adani@emerson.com or call (714) 803-3399. ISA Cal Poly Pomona Student Section Cal Poly Students Visit Scattergood Generating Station By Paul Franklin, President, ISA Los Angeles Section In February, eleven engineering students from Cal Poly Pomona ISALA Section were treated to a tour of the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power fossil fuel power plant in Playa Del Rey. First the students were lectured on the basics of power generation including the regenerative steam cycle that converts water into 1000 degree steam at 1800 PSI which is then used to turn a turbine generator at 3600 RPM. Next was a walk around all of the equipment, instrumentation, and controls necessary to manufacture and deliver this electrical energy to the Los Angeles power grid. Afterward our own Plant Engineer spoke of his experiences and answered questions on the opportunities for engineers at Photo courtesy of Paul Franklin LADWP. The response from the tour was overwhelmingly positive with one student proclaiming that they had learned more in those few hours at Scattergood then they had in school this year. A special thanks goes out to John Prins, the Operating Supervisor in charge of Training and Safety for Power Generation and John Levy our Plant Engineer. 14978 Sand Canyon Ave., Suite C Irvine, CA 92618 Office: 949-559-1941 Fax: 949-653-2420 Instrumentation and Control Systems for Southern California, Nevada and Hawaii Golden State Controls and Invensys Foxboro We are the authorized Representative for the Foxboro Systems group.
