Let me begin with an important note. I create the 2019 Home Design Trends with the acknowledgement that interior design is extremely subjective and highly personal. You may remember I included this disclaimer in last year s edition. The key factor in personalizing your home interior is to make selections that appeal to you, as trends will come and go. Utilizing a design professional will help you surround yourself in what makes you happy and reflects your taste, all while making sure the principles of good design are kept as a priority. With an education and background in interior design, but now fully entrenched in the real estate aspect of my career, I do my best to interpret the 2019 interior design trends with an eye for the benefit to our clients. The fashion industry sets the tone for color palettes and the design industry usually follows suit. Timing of when trends take hold are related to geographic areas. So, in less populated areas, trends generally emerge later and fade later. Enjoy, Jackie Harger TEAM BRUNO
COLOR Pantone s pick for color of the year Living Coral, pantone #16-1546 is a pastel desert terracotta but with vibrancy that shouts of optimism and happiness! Tiered layers from blush to terracotta can create a grounded space with fabulous accents. Remember to consider the intensity of the color and use it proportionately to create the impact. Too much of a good thing can be a bit too much. Less is more when dealing with a high intensity color such as this year s color pick. Here is where a little design expertise with shading and application can have a huge benefit to the client.
COLOR Always a key design element, the newest neutral is Blush, pairing exceptionally well with greys and naturals to create a calming palette. Expect to see color palettes that complement the blush hues well, such as olive or hunter greens, oxblood and navy. We ll see a move away from all cool grey walls and dark stain hardwood floors to a warmer color palette and accent walls of color. Wood will remain popular, but in lighter tones than we ve seen last year.
KITCHENS You will see a resurgence of matte black used in kitchens, rather than the minimalist all-white look that has enjoyed a long run. Black appliances, plumbing fixtures, and hardware are great ways to incorporate a little sleek and modern into your existing space. Pewter and gunmetal will also be popular hardware finishes. Lighter wood and stone accents will remain popular which gives an organic and textural feel to a space.
KITCHENS Mixing cabinet color finishes will be on trend, and you ll see bold mixes of color choices, as shown below. Here is an area I tend to be very conservative, as not too many people want to go so trendy on the selection that in a few years it looks dated or you tire of the color. Cabinetry is an expensive line item in a remodel and not too easy to change. Unless you re up for a remodel in a few years, choosing a more neutral option and utilizing accent paint may be a more enduring choice, and less expensive to update. Still, it s fun to see the trend of bold color and if it feels authentic to your style- then I say, go for it! From a resale standpoint in real estate, too much off the beaten path narrows your audience of buyers, so that maybe something to keep in mind.
TECH & FABRICS Tech Trends - Digital technology in households will be as strong as ever, and incorporated into the latest kitchen appliances. Bluetooth capability can have your morning espresso ready before setting foot in the kitchen, and with new wine pour systems, you can have several bottles open and preserved just waiting for whatever suits your fancy at the time. Controlling your home, from security systems and video door bells, lighting and mechanical systems all run from apps on your phone. Fabrics -Textures will remain strong and bold. People love to touch and feel soft dense fabrics to relax in for upholstery and bedding. You ll see everything from heavily woven linens to corduroy, velvets, suedes and leathers. Geometric patterns stay popular albeit in newer color palettes for 2019.
FLOORING Flooring trends continue to favor hard surfaces such as wood or tiles, even luxury vinyl planking for ease of care. But, the space-defining and acoustical attributes of carpets are entirely useful in design, so there is a place for these textiles. Wall-to-wall is less favored than utilizing area rugs to define and create intimate spaces. Low pile heights are easy to care for, and various textures and materials offer lots of great options. Wool, silk and jute are all sustainable materials that can really enrich a room with pattern, color and warmth. This is also an area where you can change and update your look fairly easily!
ART DECO Art Deco styling in furnishings and accessories will strive to reach the level of our love for Mid Century Modern styling. Look for the influences of this opulent and luxurious style period known for bright metallic finishes, bold and graceful curves, crystal accents, exotic skins, jeweled tones and lacquer finishes. Accent pieces, accessories and lighting are great areas to update with this trend. Depending on what the overall aesthetic of the room is, Art Deco styling can add a subtle gracefulness without overwhelming as evidenced in the images below.
A FINAL NOTE There are literally hundreds of changing trends and different ways to create rooms and reflect your style. Personally, I love to think of the hard finishes of the home such as walls, floors, railings, doors, trim, cabinetry, fireplaces, and fixtures as the canvas that can then be stylized with the color palette and influence desired. Decorative lighting, furnishings, accessories, area rugs and artwork all work together to create a room to work with any style or taste, and can be changed relatively easily and frequently if you have the desire. When it comes to designing a home that you plan to resell sooner rather than later, this is a good approach as the updates that a potential buyer may want to make to personalize their new home could be easy to accomplish and not hinder a sale for fear of a costly remodel. That said, by no means should you live in a space you don t love, so design to please yourself. Your individual plans and goals should be the priority in the design decisions you make. One of the greatest pleasures of my job is being able to draw upon my education and experience in design and building to provide additional value for our clients. If you have questions or ideas that you d like some help with, it would be my pleasure to assist you! I have many trusted resources to draw upon. Please feel free to call and we can discuss. Here s to great design and beautiful interiors in 2019! Jackie
