Thermal Energy Review NSWER KEY Station 1 1. In each box provided, use circles to represent molecules and sketch the molecular arrangement for each state of matter. 2. Label each arrow on the diagram below. These terms should be familiar to you. freezing

Station 2 NSWER KEY 1. On each bold line write in the appropriate temperature for the scale provided. 1. Which container or will heat up more rapidly? Which container or will cool down more rapidly? Container because dark surfaces absorb most of the thermal radiation they receive Container because dark surfaces radiate 2. Which container or will heat up more rapidly? Which container or will cool down more rapidly? Water Land Water Land Container because land surfaces absorb Container because land surfaces radiate 3. Which container or will heat up more rapidly? Which container or will cool down more rapidly? Rough Smooth Rough Smooth Container because rough surfaces radiate absorb (more surface area) Container because rough surfaces radiate (more surface area)

Station 3 NSWER KEY 1. Some people in the picture are using a metal rod to roast marsh mellows while others are using a stick from a tree. Who needs to be more careful not to get burned and why? Metal is a good conductor of heat. Therefore this person needs to be careful because if the metal rod is kept in the fire for a long period of time it could get very hot and burn him or her. The person using a wood stick should not get burned because wood is an insulator and therefore does not transfer heat well. 2. There is a cooler on the table. How does the cooler keep things cold? e sure to include the following terms in your response: heat, insulator, and thermal energy. Heat always flows from high thermal energy to low thermal energy. cooler is designed to prevent this heat flow from occurring. Most coolers have Styrofoam between the plastic coverings. This Styrofoam has many pockets of air within it and therefore is a good insulator slowing the movement of thermal energy. 3. There are 3 types of heat transfer conduction, convection, and radiation. Define each and provide 1 example. Conduction: the transfer of heat through direct contact of particles of matter Ex: metal spoon in a hot pot Convection: the transfer of heat through motion of matter such as moving air or water Ex: air circulation in your house Radiation: electromagnetic waves produced by objects because of their temperature Ex: sunlight
