LIGHTING 1) Switch off lights and fans wherever not necessary. Make use of daylight wherever possible. 2) Many automatic devices can help in saving energy used in lighting. Consider employing infrared sensors, motion sensors, automatic timers, dimmers and solar cells wherever applicable, to switch on/off lighting circuits. 3) Avoid using energy more than necessary. In toilets, bathroom, portico, verandah & staircase we can use CFL instead of Tubelights or Incandescent Lamp. 4) Usage of Incandescent Lamp should be avoided since 70% - 90% of energy is lost due to heat. It will emit Red rays and will pollute the atmosphere. 5) Replace incandescent lamp with CFL. Incandescent Lamp consumes 4 times more energy than the CFL for the same light output and releases 4 times more green house gases than CFL. 6) A tube light of 40 watts with electronic choke will absorb lesser watts than one with an ordinary choke. 7) Usage of 36 Watts Slim tube light will save 75 % of energy consumption when compared with 4 nos of Ordinary 40 watts Incandescent Lamp. 8) Appropriate coloring to the building and provision of windows at proper places will reduce the wastage of power. 9) Select lighting fixtures on the basis of their efficiency. Fluorescent lamps produce about four times as much light per watt as incandescent bulbs. 10) Install fixtures on two or three separate circuits in large rooms where you may need high levels of lighting periodically but not all the time. 11) Use three-way switches or dimmer control switches to keep lighting levels low whenever possible. 12) Install photoelectric controls and timers to turn off outdoor lights during the day. 13) Clean lighting fixtures regularly. Dust on lamps, reflectors and light bulbs impairs lighting efficiency. 14) Use lamps with built-in-reflectors,which would enable the use of lower watt bulbs. 15) Decrease the partition heights wherever possible. 16) Provide time switches for areas that are commonly used for short periods. FANS 17) Fans have to be cleaned periodically and bearings have to be greased so that the electric load will be reduced and thereby saves energy. 18) Proper utilization of size of fan depending upon the size of the room is necessary, otherwise it leads to wastage of energy. GRINDER 19) The belt tension of Grinder should be checked and changed if situation warrants so that 30 % of wastage of energy will be saved. Usage of Nylon belt is recommended. 20) By keeping the rice & dhal soaked for atleast 5 hours, 15% of energy will be saved. REFRIGERATOR 21) Select refrigerator and freezer sizes that are large enough for your family s needs.anything larger uses more energy than necessary. 22) Keep refrigerators and freezers filled to capacity, but don t overcrowd to the point where cannot circulate freely around food. 23) Clean the vacuum condenser coils in the back or at the bottom of your refrigerator every three months or so. Dust-covered coils impair the efficiency of compressor operation and increase energy usage. 24) Make sure refrigerators and freezers have tight-fitting door gaskets to prevent infiltration to warm air.. 25) Use the Energy Star labels found on new refrigerators or freezers to help you buy the most energy efficient models. The energy labels compare average annual operating costs of various models. 26) Use the power save switch for your refrigerator. This will allow you to turn off the heating elements imbedded in the walls of your refrigerator that prevent condensation on the exterior surface. Generally, moisture forms only in humid weather, so activate the elements during summer months if needed. Check your use-and care manual for specific instructions. 27) Turn down your refrigerator and remove perishables before going on an extended vacation 28) Do not place-uncovered liquids in your refrigerator. In addition to absorbing undesirable flavors, the liquids give off vapors that add to the compressor workload. 29) Remove all ingredients for a meal from the refrigerator of freezer at one time. AIR CONDITIONER 36) Proper capacity of AC should be used in the rooms. i.e for the size of 100 sq.ft room 1 Tonne AC may be installed. 37) Locate window air conditioner on the north side of your house.direct sunlight on your unit makes it work harder. 38) The rooms should be made air tight and leak proof to avoid leakage of air which in turn saves energy. 39) Set the cooling thermostat as high as comfort permits.the higher the setting,the more energy you save. 40) Timer in the AC has to be set for limited hours to reduce the energy consumption. 41) Usage of fan in the AC room will circulate the existing cooling air around the room which in turn consumes less energy. 42) Usage of star rated energy efficient electrical appliances are advised to reduce the electricity bill. 43) Energy saver can be used for AC to avoid over consumption of power. 44) Clean the AC filter atleast once a month.a choked filter means improper cooling and more power. 45) Draw shades or draperies to block the sunlight during the hottest part of the day. 46) Install awnings over windows exposed to direct sunlight. 47) Run kitchen and bath exhaust fans only long enough to rid the house of unwanted vapor,smoke and odors during summer.running them too long allows cool air to escape. 48) Position heat producing appliances such as lamps and TV sets away from the cooling thermostat.heat from equipment may cause the thermostat to read a temperature higher than the room temperature.it could lead to overcooling. WATER HEATER 49) Use solar water heater instead of Electric water heater. Electric water heater consumes more power and is less efficient. WASHING MACHINE
50) Use washing machine under full load condition if not fully loaded to its capacity energy will be wasted. The same moto applies for Iron box also. 51) Set the water selector on your washer to warm or cold for most loads. Very few loads require hot water for washing. Tests indicate that cold-water detergents thoroughly clean most fabrics in warm or cold water with considerable savings on the energy required for water heating. 52) Always use cold water for rinse cycles. 53) Use the amount of laundry detergent manufacturers recommend. Over dosing hampers effective washing action and may require extra rinsing which uses more energy. 54) Dry only full loads in your dryer but don t overload. It causes excessive wrinkling. 55)Avoid over drying. This wastes energy and harms fabrics as well. 56)Remove clothes from the dryer as soon as it stops, before wrinkles have time to set clothes you promptly fold or place on hangers require little or no ironing so you can save electricity as well as your own energy. 57)Locate your dryer in a place ventilated with fresh, dry air Circulating humid air through the machine increases drying time and the energy needed to run it. 58)The lint filter in the washing machine should be cleaned for greater efficiency. COOKING 59) Use pots and pans with absolutely flat bottoms on your range. To cook efficiently, heat must transfer directly from the surface element to the pan. Warped bottoms leave an air gap, which provides an escape route for heat. 60) Select pots and pans that are the right size to completely cover the surface element. When any part of the surface elements is exposed, you re wasting heat wasting heat and energy. 61) Keep reflector pans beneath surface elements shiny and clean. Shiny pans reflect heat rays onto pan bottoms; dull pans absorb the heat. 62) Develop the habit of Lids on Cooking. Tight-fitting lids help keep heat in a pan, permitting you to use lower temperature settings and shorter cooking times. 63) Heat only the amount of water you need for cooking. The water will boil faster if you cover it with a lid. 64) Start vegetables on high heat in a covered pan. When steam appears around the lid, lower the heat setting and allows food to simmer until done. 65) Plan one-dish meals in a slow cooker. Such meals require less energy than those calling for the use of the oven plus two or three surface elements. 66) Make more use of your pressure cooker. It cuts cooking time to one-third that of conventional methods.
67) Consider cooking small quantities of food in appliances such as an electric toaster oven, skillet, or grill instead of your oven. Portable appliances generally use about one-third the electricity of your oven. Also, consider using smaller coffee makers if you only want one or two cups of coffee. 68) Use your microwave oven instead of your conventional electric oven whenever possible Microwaves can cook food in one-fourth or less the normal cooking time. 69) Prepare your whole meal in the oven at the same time. Often you can simultaneously cook foods that have different cooking temperatures. Variations of 25 degrees usually produce favorable cooking results. 70) Carefully time your preheat period when baking. Generally, five to eight minutes is sufficient. There is no need to preheat for boiling, roasting or cooking most casseroles. 71) Rearrange oven shelves before turning on the oven to prevent wasteful heat escape. 72)Avoid opening the oven door for a Peek when baking. Each time you open the door, a considerable portion of the heat escapes. 73) Activate the self cleaning cycle on your electric oven only when the oven is heavily soiled. Start the cycle right after using the oven while it is still hot. 74) Never use an oven to heat the kitchen or dry clothing. It wastes energy and can be hazardous. 75) If your dishwasher has a power save switch, use it to bypass the drying cycle. The electric heating element for drying uses a considerable amount of energy. 76) Dry your hair with a towel instead of blow-drying it. Many hair dryers consumer as much energy as an electric toaster, plus you use them for longer periods. EXHAUST FAN 77) Exhaust fan should not be placed above the windows, if done so air will be circulated inside the room and the purpose will not be solved. WATER PUMPS 78) Energy efficient water pumps has to be used to save energy. 79) Avoid too many bends in the pipes.
