The public review materials for the standards are available at http://tsp.plasa.org/tsp/documents/public_review_docs.php. Responses are due before the end of day on 7 July 2013; the reviews will have ended when July 8 starts. BSR E1.6-4, Portable Control of Fixed-Speed Electric Chain Hoists in the Entertainment Industry This draft is part of the E1.6 powered entertainment rigging project. This standard covers the minimum requirements for the selection and use of portable electric chain hoist control systems. Permanently installed systems are outside the scope of this standard. Construction or design of controllers is governed by standards such as UL508A and as such are outside the scope of this standard. BSR E1.39, Entertainment Technology Selection and Use of Personal Fall Arrest Systems on Portable Structures Used in the Entertainment Industry This standard establishes minimum requirements for the selection and use of personal fall arrest systems on portable structures in the entertainment industry. It also establishes minimum requirements for manufacturers and owners of these structures being used as work platforms. The purpose of the document is to provide employers and workers methods for protecting workers in the entertainment industry that meet or exceed current standards for industrial fall protection. Event Safety Guide Still in Public Review but Not Forever The Event Safety Guide: A guide to health, safety and welfare at live music and similar events in the United States, is available for public review and comment on the Event Safety Alliance website (http://www.eventsafetyalliance.org/) to all registered users of the site. Registration is free and minimal personal information is collected. The deadline for comment is 5 August 2013. Volume 17, Number 12 Page 1

This U.S. Event Safety Guide is based on the book by the same name published in the UK by the Health and Safety Executive, but it has been rewritten to suit North American events. Of particular note is the inclusion of information from the Federal Emergency Management Agency on emergency preparedness for special events. No more ANSI TIA 485-A The American National Standard that specifies the electrical characteristics of the generators and receivers used in ANSI E1.11, DMX512A, is no more. In the May 24 issue of Standards Action, ANSI had two announcements relevant to TIA 485-A. One was a notice that the Telecommunications Industry Association was abandoning its project to reaffirm ANSI/TIA 485-A-1998 (R2003), Electrical Characteristics of Generators and Receivers for Use in Balanced Digital Multipoint Systems. The second notice was that ANSI/TIA 485-A-1998 (R2003), among others, would be withdrawn as an American National Standard because it had not been reaffirmed or revised within the five-year period following its approval as an ANS. The withdrawal would be effective 30 days after the publication of that notice in the May 24 issue. Time's up. TIA 485-A still exists, but it is now a legacy document, and no longer an American National Standard. These notices were published on page 7 of Standards Action volume 44, number 21. That publication is available in the Standards Action folder at http://publicaa.ansi.org/sites/apdl/documents/forms/allitems.aspx. ANSI Offers Webinar on Standards "What is an American National Standard anyway?" is a free 60 to 90 minute webinar to be offered by ANSI on 17 July 2013, at 1:30 pm Eastern Time. If you wish to attend, please register at https://goansi.webex.com/goansi/onstage/g.php?d=319543790&t=a The purpose is to offer a basic overview of the American National Standards (ANS) process, ANSI s role, the role of 228 ANSI-Accredited Standards Developers (www.ansi.org/asd), the ANSI Essential Requirements (www.ansi.org/essentialrequirements), and how stakeholders can participate in this voluntary consensus standards development process. The webinar will include a Q&A opportunity. Questions? Ask psa@ansi.org and all things will be made clear. OHSA Guidelines for Live Performance Structures Announced for Ontario The OHSA applies to all workers (as defined in the OHSA) in the Live Performance Industry in Ontario whether they are employees, independent contractors, self-employed, on contract or on honorarium, and whether they are from inside or outside the province or country. Beyond their obligations under the OHSA, as a best practice, workplace parties should protect visitors and volunteers with the same health and safety policies that have been established for workers. The failure of any temporary performance/event structure, no matter how large or small, can have devastating results. Factors in these failures may include severe weather, overloading of the structure, improper design, unstable ground conditions, component failure, inadequately trained workers, improper installation, or any combination of these factors. Particular attention should be given to these factors when designing the structure and throughout its erection, use and dismantling. Download the guidelines at http://www.labour.gov.on.ca/english/hs/pubs/liveperformance/gl_live_structures.php NFPA Seeks SAF-AXM Committee Members The NFPA Committee on Safety to Life Assembly Occupancies is seeking members in the interest classifications of Installer/Maintainer, Applied Research/Testing Laboratory, Insurance, Consumer, Labor, Manufacturer and Special Expert. If you are interested, please visit http://plasa.me/nnmf9, review what would be required from you, and submit an application. The committee is responsible for chapters 12 and 13 of Volume 17, Number 12 Page 2
