March 2005 Volume 20, Issue 3 CSLA ANNOUNCES 2005 AWARDS OF EXCELLENCE IN LANDSCAPE ARCHITECTURE The Canadian Society of Landscape Architects (CSLA) is pleased to announce that 30 projects located in Canada, the United States and France have won national and regional recognition in the prestigious 2005 CSLA Awards of Excellence in Landscape Architecture. The Montreal, Quebec company of Williams, Asselin, Ackaoui et associés working in collaboration with André Plante representing the Ville de Québec won the National Honour Award for their rehabilitation design of Honoré Mercier Avenue in Quebec City. The National Merit Award winners are: Landplan Collaborative Ltd. (Guelph, Ontario) for the Royal Botanical Gardens Land Use Plan in Burlington, Ontario; Fauteux et associés architectes paysagistes (Montreal, Quebec) for the Montreal park plan Parc de la coulée Grou: plan directeur et realisation de la phase 1; Claude Cormier architectes paysagistes inc. (Montreal, Quebec) for the Blue Tree project in Sonoma, California; and Durante Kreuk Inc. (Vancouver, British Columbia) for Mole Hill Housing in Vancouver. The National Citation Award winner is University of Guelph Associate Professor Nancy Pollock-Ellwand for Landscape Legacies: Created Space from the Prehistoric to the Present, a book with accompanying CD-ROM created for the Office of Open Learning at the University of Guelph. The Regional Honour Award winners are: Stantec Consulting Ltd. (Ontario) for Historical Research of the Thoreau MacDonald Property in Vaughan, Ontario; Carlyle + Associates (Edmonton, Alberta) for the Oliver Village in Edmonton; The MBTW Group (Toronto, Ontario) for the City of Niagara Falls (Ontario) Streetscape Master Plan and Urban Design Guidelines; and Van Der Zalm + Associates Inc. Landscapes/Paysages new 2005 issue In the fall of 2004, CSLA entered into an agreement with Naylor Publications to provide publishing services for Landscapes/Paysages (L-P). Naylor had been highly recommended by several of the CSLA component associations, and our own experience in the publication of the 2004 Membership Roster attested to the fine service Naylor provides. Prior to this, MediaEdge published L-P for two years. We experienced a wide variety of problems and were generally not pleased with responses to our concerns. The CSLA Board of Governors determined that due to poor performance, unsatisfactory editorial support and inconsistent staffing, a change was needed. CSLA had also sought a paid Editor in Chief to oversee the publication and to replace outgoing Editor in Chief, Cecelia Paine. Paine worked tirelessly in the years leading up to this to enhance and improve L-P. She set a very high standard for all future publications and we will always be grateful to her for her dedication and perseverance in support of the development of LP. In February 2004, CSLA engaged the services of Judy Lord as Editor in Chief. Naylor has just completed their first issue of L-P; the issue coordinated by AAPQ members which focuses on the work of Québec landscape architects. All CSLA members will be receiving it shortly. As with all new relationships there were some growing pains. First and foremost, the stock selected for the issue and for the cover is of a lesser quality than what we requested. Naylor has taken immediate steps to remedy this and will remove the covers from all of the 1000 copies that the AAPQ special ordered. This will be replaced with a much heavier stock and attention will be given to ensuring that the image on the cover reproduces the colour of the original photograph as well as possible. In the future, we will discuss the cover stock with Naylor with a view to improving this very important element of the magazine. CSLA also worked with an independent graphic designer in the fall of 2004 and we will continue to develop a standard look for many of the regular features in the magazine. We are very pleased with the collaboration we have received from Naylor and know that we will continue to develop a relationship based on trust and cooperation. We will continue to strive for high standards and to develop and improve the publication to ensure that it is one of which all CSLA members can be proud! National Design Conference Call for Papers Design Exchange is pleased to announce our first national design conference: BY DESIGN: An Interdisciplinary Conference on Issues of Design Education, Business and Material Culture. The conference will take place from October 12 15, 2005 in Toronto. The event is intended to attract designers, educators, and members of the business and cultural communities. This unique, interdisciplinary approach will encourage attendees to interact and learn from each other, while still allowing them to focus on their area of interest. The conference will include receptions, keynote speakers, panel discussions, and moderated sessions where papers will be presented on common themes. We invite your association members to submit a proposal (no more than 300 words) to present a paper at the conference. The deadline for proposals is April 15, 2005. We hope to have strong participation from all design disciplines across the country. Design Exchange is Canada s design museum and centre for design education and research. This conference is organized by the Design Exchange with the support of the Ontario College of Art and Design and the Rotman School of Management.
