The INFLORESCENCE Orchids for Amateurs South Bay Orchid Society, Inc. P.O. BOX 3793 Torrance, CA 90510-3793 www.southbayorchidsociety.com C. Skinneri Grown by Larry Bergen Our January 19, 2018 Guest Speaker will be Gary Putnam Insect Control Gary Putnam started growing Orchids when he was a teenager, but became a serious grower over twenty years ago. He has a degree in Botany from UC Santa Barbara and also took courses in horticulture at Cal Poly Pomona. Upon retiring he works two days a week at Brita s Garden in Seal Beach, where he helps people with his knowledge of growing plants, and it gets him out of the house as well. Gary served twelve years as President of Long Beach Amateur Orchid Society. His talk is about using safer methods for common orchid pest control. The plant raffle table for this meeting will be made up of the insecticides he will be demonstrating as well as thirteen cattleyas. Orchid Ailments -- The AOS s Pests and Disease Series Orchids magazine's popular Orchid Ailments series provides readers with information and images to help them identify orchid ailments and grow healthier plants. From Aphids to Virus, the series explores the finer points of insect pests, rots, disease and cultural challenges, to name a few, and offers advice on prevention and treatment for the problems. Articles include the following topics: Aphids, Black Rot, Bud Blast, Caterpillars, Cold Damage, Coming in from the Cold, Fertilizer Burn, Fungus Gnats, Growing Under Lights, Handling Damage, Heat Stress, Home Remedies, Grasshoppers, Mealybugs, Mites, Neem Oil, Orchid Blossom Midges, Phyllosticta Leaf Spot, Roaches, Rugrose Spiraling Whitefly, Scale, Snails & Slugs, Sow Bugs & Pill Bugs, Thrips, Virus, Ringspots, Whiteflies and more. Be sure to check out the information they offer. January 2018 South Bay Orchid Society page 1

Happy New Year!! We hope that everyone had a wonderful Christmas holiday and please have a happy and safe New Year holiday. Thank you to everyone who attended the December Potluck and brought the delicious food. A special nod of thanks to June and Joann for staffing the kitchen and placing the food on the tables. I also want to acknowledge all those who helped with the set-up and/or tear-down, Arthur Hazboun, Karen Low, Charlotte Morrison, and Larry and Marcy Bergen. Their hard work is much appreciated. Thank you George Vasquez for providing the beautiful plants. Events such as this are only possible due to the dedication and hard work of our generous volunteers. Thank you to everyone for a most enjoyable evening. Congratulations to Larry and Marcy Bergen, the recipients of this year s Diamond Award. At this month s Board meeting we are going to form a Nominating Committee to identify candidates for next year s Board Officers. If you have any suggestions for candidates, or if you would like to be considered for a particular Office, please call or send an e-mail to any current Board Member. We are looking for people who are interested in making our orchid society the best that it can be. New faces and ideas make for innovation and growth, which is essential for the good health of societies such as ours. Our Second Annual Orchid Auction is fast approaching (April). If you will be donating any plants to the auction, please make sure that they are disease and bug free. If the plant is not in bloom a picture of the flower or a detailed description along with the name is beneficial. On a personal note, since I will be serving as acting president at the January meeting I m looking for someone to perform the Ribbon Judging duties. If you are interested in conducting January s Ribbon Judging, please contact me at 310 377-7083. Wishing everyone a Happy and Healthy New Year. Newport Harbor Orchid Expo and Sale - February 9-11, 2018 Our society was invited to participate in the Newport Harbor Orchid Society Orchid Expo at Westminster Mall. We will place a table top display exhibit dealing with the theme of the show: "Romancing the Orchid". We need volunteers who would like to loan us healthy, quality, and blooming plants for the display. Label the pots with your name and phone number. Helpers will be needed in transporting, setting up and taking down the display. If you're interested in assisting please contact: Arthur Hazboun at (310) 995-1592 or email him at specialorchids@southbayorchidsociety.com. The show flier below has more information on the show. Thank you. January 2018 South Bay Orchid Society page 3

Everyone is invited. If you have a question, please submit your questions by January 6th to stillisch@cox.net. Thank You Larry and I would like to say a huge Thank You to SBOS for choosing us to be recipients of the Diamond Award. It was quite a surprise. We have enjoyed working with the different members of the society, getting to know them, and learning more about our orchid hobby. Thanks to everyone. Happy New Year. Cattleya - Watering and fertilizing will be at a minimum, as will potting. Careful removal of the dying sheaths will still allow buds to develop without the danger of condensationinduced rot. Low light will lead to weak spikes, staking is critical. Cymbidium - We are well into the flowering season now. Be diligent about tying the inflorescences for best arrangement of the flowers. Also watch closely for slugs and snails. If weather is quite wet, protect the plants from the rain and this will help to reduce the risk of botrytis spotting. Lycaste- Lycaste, will be moving toward their flowering season. Make sure the palmlike leaves do not interfere with the emerging inflorescences. Tying them loosely together often is helpful. Resist picking up the plant to inspect those beautiful buds and then setting it down in all different directions as the flower buds will be forced to re-orient themselves to the light source each time and will not open as nicely as they should. Keep plants a little drier during the shorter days. Paphiopedilum-The standard Paphiopedilum insigne-derived hybrids, which are called "bull dogs" and "toads," are at their peak. Unlike most other orchids, they can even be potted while in bud. There really is no wrong time to pot a paphiopedilum, and no other orchid responds so favorably to fresh mix and a cleanup. Keep an eye on watering until roots begin to grow. Phalaenopsis - Now is the peak of spike development, with the first plants in full flower. Staking and plant preparation is a must for those all-important spring shows. Correct staking now will give a better display and also make it much easier to transport to your society meetings and shows. Care with watering is vital to avoid mechanical damage to the flowers, as well as rot-related problems. Do not repot this month. January 2018 South Bay Orchid Society page 4
