HOUSTON COMMUNITY COLLEGE SOUTHWESTCOURSE SYLLABUS Bilingual Residential Wiring ELPT 1029 Instruction in wiring methods used for single family, two family, and multi-family dwelling. This course presents basic wiring techniques of electrical devices using schematics and wiring diagrams. COURSE OBJECTIVE: Students will study the principles of operation of electrical components and appliances utilized in single and multi family dwellings. The students will learn the applications, selection and installation techniques of the most common electrical devices used in homes and apartment buildings. Students will be able to perform and troubleshoot most common installations encountered in residential applications. GOALS: Students will be prepared perform most common installations found in single and multi family dwellings. Students will be able to troubleshoot common installations utilizing proper tools and equipment. Students will become familiar with technical terminology and workplace English to facilitate his/her professional growth. LEARNING OUTCOMES: Students will demonstrate mastery of these objectives by successfully completing all hands-on labs that are specific to each unit goal. Students will: Demonstrate proper installation techniques of common electrical devices and appliances. Demonstrate dexterity in the interpretation of symbols and blueprints as it applies to electrical installations. Demonstrate acquaintance with industry accepted methods in the selection of components. Demonstrate familiarity with accepted requirements from National and local Codes Demonstrate dexterity in troubleshooting common installations encountered in residential applications. REQUIRED MANUAL: Basic Electrical Wiring, 2

COURSE REQUIREMENTS AND EXPECTATIONS This is an 80-hour instructor guided seminar, 8 hours per week for 10 weeks. Student will complete hands-on, in-class labs and assignments. ATTENDANCE: Students are expected to attend all classes. DRESS CODE: Work clothing and shoes (no sandals) METHODOLOGY: 50% Theory and 50% Lab BASIC TOOLS: Wire strippers, linemen pliers, needle nose pliers, flat blade screwdriver, Phillips screwdriver, multitester REQUIREMENTS FOR COURSE COMPLETION CERTIFICATE: To receive a Certificate of Completion and Continuing Education Credit, students must meet the following requirements: Attend at least 80% of scheduled class time Complete the course review OPPORTUNITIES FOR STUDENT-FACULTY INTERACTION: Students are encouraged to ask questions and request clarification or guidance as needed during class. A question and answer period is always provided. OPPORTUNITIES FOR CAREER EXPLORATION: Topics relevant to future employment and career exploration opportunities will be presented to the students, including certification and degree prospects. OPPORTUNITIES FOR SUPPLEMENTAL INSTRUCTION: Students are informed of instructional aids and resources, including books, other publications, and web sites relevant to the course. Basic blueprint reading. Common blueprint symbols and electrical plans. Basic NEC terminology. General purpose circuits. NEC requirements for the selection and installation of general purpose circuits. Principle of operation of single-pole-double-throw switches. Electrical measuring instruments: testing voltage. Installation of three-way switches. Evaluation: Basic electrical principles and terminology. Electrical symbols. Basic circuit operation. Week 5: Small appliance circuits. NEC requirements for the selection and installation of small appliance circuits. Electrical boxes, selection and applications. Principles of operation of Ground Fault Circuit Interrupters. NEC requirements for the selection and installation of GFCI s. Installation of GFCI s in kitchen, garage and bathroom circuits. 4

Selection and applications of single and double pole switches. Operation of dimmer switches. Operation of proximity detector and photocells. Electrical measuring instruments: clamp-on meters. Installation of dimmer switches. Installation of proximity detector fixtures and photocells. Evaluation: Circuit installations. Types of circuits and applications. Conductor selection and usage. NEC requirements. Week 8: Week 9: Week 10: Appliance and individual circuits. NEC requirements for the selection and installation of appliance and individual circuits. Service entrance panels operation and applications. NEC requirements for the selection and installation of Service entrance panels. Calculating circuit requirements in single family dwellings. Basic telephone, cable and network circuits. Installation of circuit breakers. Installation of basic telephone outlets and jacks. Electrical raceways. NEC requirements for the selection and installation of Electrical Metallic Tubing. Common practices in cutting, bending, and installing EMT. Installation of conductors in conduit.
