HOUSTON COMMUNITY COLLEGE SOUTHWESTCOURSE SYLLABUS Bilingual Residential Wiring ELPT 1029 Instruction in wiring methods used for single family, two family, and multi-family dwelling. This course presents basic wiring techniques of electrical devices using schematics and wiring diagrams. COURSE OBJECTIVE: Students will study the principles of operation of electrical components and appliances utilized in single and multi family dwellings. The students will learn the applications, selection and installation techniques of the most common electrical devices used in homes and apartment buildings. Students will be able to perform and troubleshoot most common installations encountered in residential applications. GOALS: Students will be prepared perform most common installations found in single and multi family dwellings. Students will be able to troubleshoot common installations utilizing proper tools and equipment. Students will become familiar with technical terminology and workplace English to facilitate his/her professional growth. LEARNING OUTCOMES: Students will demonstrate mastery of these objectives by successfully completing all hands-on labs that are specific to each unit goal. Students will: Demonstrate proper installation techniques of common electrical devices and appliances. Demonstrate dexterity in the interpretation of symbols and blueprints as it applies to electrical installations. Demonstrate acquaintance with industry accepted methods in the selection of components. Demonstrate familiarity with accepted requirements from National and local Codes Demonstrate dexterity in troubleshooting common installations encountered in residential applications. COURSE REQUIREMENTS AND EXPECTATIONS This is an 80-hour instructor guided seminar, 8 hours per week for 10 weeks. Student will complete hands-on, in-class labs and assignments. ATTENDANCE: Students are expected to attend all classes. DRESS CODE: Work clothing and shoes (no sandals) METHODOLOGY: 50% Theory and 50% Lab BASIC TOOLS: Wire strippers, linemen pliers, needle nose pliers, flat blade screwdriver, Phillips screwdriver, multitester REQUIREMENTS FOR COURSE COMPLETION CERTIFICATE: To receive a Certificate of Completion and Continuing Education Credit, students must meet the following requirements: Attend at least 80% of scheduled class time Complete the course review OPPORTUNITIES FOR STUDENT-FACULTY INTERACTION: Students are encouraged to ask questions and request clarification or guidance as needed during class.
