OVERVIEW The managed access master control unit (837-500/0623060) connects to the VOLO cloud based server through either a TCP/IP Ethernet port or through the included GSM/GPRS 2G modem. If you are running a DHCP server on your network then you do not need to configure the communication settings as a static IP address is not required. The section below (configuring the managed access control master unit) explains how to configure the unit if you do not have a DHCP server. The GSM/GPRS modem does not require any user configuration. To add additional doors to the site, up to a maximum of 50, you should purchase the managed access slave control units (837-510/0623070). These connect via the self-terminating RS485 bus connection, no additional terminators are required. Larger sites are accomodated by using multiple master units that can be logically grouped in the software. Please be aware that if you don t have an Ethernet connection then by default the unit will attempt to connect through the GSM/GPRS network. This will require the VOLO airtime license (837-530/0697340). CONNECTING THE MANAGED ACCESS CONTROL UNIT (837-500/0623060) Wire the components to the managed access master control unit as shown on the opposite page. Power up the unit and wait for the OK LED to flash in a regular heartbeat pattern. Should there be a fault with either the unit or the installation, then the diagnostic LEDs will show the fault type enabling you to report or rectify the problem before proceeding. (See LED diagnostics table on the opposite page) Press the exit button or in the absence of an exit button, short the 0v and exit terminals together. The lock relay LED will come on and the lock should release. The reader s default indication has all the LEDs on. Access granted is denoted with a single flashing Green LED. Access Denied is a single flashing Red LED. The green reader LED should flash when the exit button is pressed. VOLO Installation and Technical Documentation 5

CONFIGURING THE MANAGED ACCESS MASTER CONTROL UNIT The managed access control master unit requires configuration and initialisation before use. To do this you require a Windows PC or laptop with USB ports and Internet access. Install the VOLO installer tool software. This is available to download from the Help page of your installer login for VOLO. You may wish to create a desktop shortcut for this application for easier access in the future. Tip: Always ensure you have downloaded the latest version of the installer tool to ensure you have the most recent version of firmware. The latest version of firmware is included within the installer tool application. Remove the power from the unit. Remove the managed access control master unit wiring label and then plug in the installer tool interface adapter supplied (ppc-fdib), in the bottom left corner of the PCB, as shown in the picture below. Connect the supplied USB cable to this adapter and then to your PC or laptop running the installer tool software. You are now ready to start the configuration and intialisation process. Warning: Make sure the adapter is plugged into both rows of the header pins (2 rows of 3) on the PCB before you proceed. Power up the unit with the installer tool adapter installed. Note your PC or laptop may need to download a device driver for this device so allow this to complete first. Now run the VOLO installer tool by double clicking the Gendis installer tool application. 6 VOLO Installation and Technical Documentation

Click on settings and select the COM port that your PC or laptop has assigned to this application. The drop down box lists all available COM ports. Tip: You can check this by right clicking on Computer in your start menu and then selecting Properties then Device Manager and then Ports (COM & LPT). Now click on View Device Details and then on the Get Details button. Follow the instruction by power cycling the master unit so that it goes into its bootloader and provides the required details. Tip: You can power cycle the master unit by removing and replacing the two pin power plug at the top left of the power supply (row of four two pin plugs) marked 12v and 0v. You do not need to do anything with this information at present but should you lose the wiring label and need to obtain serial number and activation code or need this information for talking to support this is how the details are obtained. Now close this window. FIRMWARE UPDATE Select the Update Firmware button. It is important to update the firmware to the latest available version before proceeding further. Power cycle the master unit as described above to start the firmware update. If you receive an access to the port XX is denied error message from Windows click the OK button and power cycle the unit again to attempt to re-start the firmware update. The firmware update will take a minute, once the green bar has progressed to fill the space the update is complete. You can check the version of firmware installed using the View Device Detail option as described in the previous section. Tip: It is useful to know which version of firmware is installed whenever you contact Technical Support. Please store the installer tool lead and adapter in a safe place. You will need this for your slave control units and possible future upgrades. Tip: Keep the installer tool inside the master control enclosure. If you are updating firmware on a unit already in use you will need to re-instate this controller in the software following the firmware update. COMMUNICATION SETTINGS The Communication Settings button displays a number of settings with default values (see below). You can query the existing settings and edit these if you wish. You must first select whether you wish the communication method to be automatic (dual communication path) or Modem (GSM/GPRS) or Ethernet only. Automatic mode must only be selected if an Ethernet cable is connected and the unit can be configured automatically on Ethernet and it will use the in-built GSM/GPRS (sometimes referred to as 2G or 2.5G) modem as fail safe communication mode. (VOLO airtime license required) If you are installing a single communication mode you must choose the relevant communication method, either Modem (GSM/GPRS) or Ethernet. You may manually configure your Ethernet connection should you not have a DHCP server available. Please note that VOLO does not require a fixed IP address to work, it communicates by default via DHCP. If you have DHCP you do not need to set any of the Ethernet settings. Should you not have a DHCP server you will need to contact the site IT Manager to obtain an IP address and other connection information. 8 VOLO Installation and Technical Documentation

Once you have completed the setup then press Send to Device and follow the power cycle instruction. You can now close this application, turn off the power to the master unit and remove the installer tool adapter and USB cable. Please ensure ports 1883 and 2215 are open for the controller to communicate with the VOLO cloud. Tip: Remember to always download the latest version of the installer tool to ensure you have the most recent version of firmware to download. You have now completed the configuration of the unit power cycle the unit and log in to my.volo-access.com to access your account. Now follow the Quick Start Guide section to set up your system on page 12. The quick start guide is also available on the hosting site on the Help page. CONNECTING TO SLAVE UNITS (837-510/0623070) VIA THE RS485 DATA CONNECTION You can connect up to a maximum of 24no. managed access slave units to one master unit (for a total of 50no. doors). The master unit handles all communication with the outside world. Mulitple master units can be installed on a single site if no capability of connecting hardwired slave controllers. These can be logically grouped in the software to appear as a single site. The Master unit connects to the slave units through a dedicated RS485 connection. Each cable section, between master and slave and between slave and slave has its own section of cable carrying the half-duplex RS485 communication between units. Termination of this bus is automatic on the master and each slave unit. Bus terminators are not required. ANTENNA INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS Mobile reception test To check mobile reception either use a mobile GPRS signal strength tester such as the Sequoia SWGPRS023 device or if not available use a mobile phone operating on the same network. GSM and GPRS are always colocated where GPRS is available so good GSM (phone) coverage would indicate good GPRS coverage too. Look for good signal strength, 50% or better, or two bars of a four bar display on your mobile phone. The antenna The T bar GSM/GPRS antenna supplied can be mounted inside the plastic cabinet, if mobile reception allows. In areas of weaker signal strength (50% or less) always mount outside the cabinet and consider using the non-standard high gain alternative antenna. (please contact Norbain for alternative aerial information) To install outside the cabinet Release the cable tie securing the antenna connector to the lid. Place the antenna connector through a hole in the cabinet (you can use the push-outs if you wish) and secure to the GSM/GPRS terminal in the lid tightening to finger tightness. Find a suitable location for mounting the antenna. Avoid large obstructing objects particularly if they are of metal construction, lighting and other electrical equipment, placing the antenna up high helps, check the location chosen with your phone or mobile signal strength tester. Peel back the protective cover on the underside of the antenna to reveal the adhesive. Secure the antenna, using the adhesive, in a vertical orientation (cable exiting from the side) aprox 30cm if possible from the controller. Finally connect the antenna connector to the terminal connector tightening to finger tightness. Ensure that the cable is free from obstruction and out of the path of people and doors. To install inside the cabinet Peel back the protective cover on the reverse side of the antenna to reveal the adhesive. Secure the antenna in a vertical orientation on the cabinet lid. Avoid placing in close proximity to the cabinet power supply and PCB. Connect directly to the SMA connector on the terminal tightening the antenna connector to finger tightness. QUICK START GUIDE Follow the installation instructions (Ins- 60005-GD for Master and Ins-60006-GD for Slave) supplied with each unit Log into the website using the credentials supplied by Norbain. From the Home page, click Create New, enter the details for the new Customer and click Submit. Click Home in the navigation bar and then go to Sites by clicking on the icon alongside the new Customer. Click Create New, enter a Site code, Site name and geographical time zone then click Submit. Click Back to Sites List, and then click the icon alongside the new Site. On the subsequent page click Create New. Enter the details of the Master board - serial & activation numbers are found on the wiring label of the unit. Click Submit when done. Enter the details of the two doors for the Master board then click Submit. No Are you adding a Slave controller? Yes Click Sites in the navigation bar. Click the icon alongside the new Site. On the subsequent page click Create New. Enter the details of the Slave board - serial & activation numbers are found on the wiring label. Click Submit when done. No Yes Are you adding more Slave controllers? Enter the details of the two doors for the Slave board then click Submit. Click Sites in the navigation bar. Click the icon. Check that all doors are online. If not please contact Support. For relevant doors, select a reader type by clicking the icon of the chosen door, on the next page click Edit. For Reader 1 select the Reader Type to meet your requirements. Click Submit. Click Timezones in the navigation bar. Click Create New. Enter a Description/name. Select the required day. Enter the required timescale and click Add. Add extra days if required, click Submit. Click Access Levels in the navigation bar. Click Create New. Enter a Name. Select the required Timezone for all doors ( Set Doors To ) or select individually. Click Submit when done. Click Users in the navigation bar. Click Create New. Add details and select an access level. Click Submit when done. 12 VOLO Installation and Technical Documentation

FIRE ALARM INTEGRATION This section is in two parts. The first part shows how to integrate a fire alarm relay with VOLO. The second part offers advice on using access control with fire doors. VOLO can accept an alarm signal from a fire alarm system to automatically open doors during an alarm condition. The IN-4 input on the master controller (gd.837-500/0623060) is used as the fire alarm trigger. Wire a loop between IN-4 and via the voltage free alarm contacts on the fire panel. To be installed in a fail-safe configuration the trigger must be a normally closed loop going open when the fire alarm is activated. CONFIGURING THE SITE You configure the fire alarm by selecting and then submitting either Active Low Default Fire Alarm or Active High Default Fire Alarm in the settings page either for the customer, site or door. If you intend all your sites to operate the same way then set this at the customer level and then ensure that the use customer settings and use site settings box is ticked on the settings page for site and door respectively. If you chose to unlock some doors and not others you may enable the Fire Alarm Integration on just the controllers with the doors you wish to open, to disable Fire Alarm Integration select the disable option and submit the settings change. Note that both doors on the controller will open under alarm conditions, if enabled correctly, you cannot individually choose to open just one door attached to a controller. Select Active Low Default Alarm if your alarm panel output is normally closed and goes open under fire alarm condition or Active High Default Alarm if your alarm panel output is normally open and goes closed under alarm conditions. OPERATION When the fire alarm trigger occurs the attached doors will open including all doors on connected Managed Access Slave controllers where Fire Alarm Integration has been enabled. You will see the following in the events page. All doors on enabled controllers connected to that master unit, including the master unit, will now be opened. Note that the opening of fire doors doesn t require a connection to the VOLO cloud, the door release is done locally under hardware control. The doors can only be returned to their original state by clearing the fire alarm in the web browser, as below. Once you have confirmation that the Fire Alarm panel output has been cleared click on Settings in the top menu bar and click the Clear Alarm button and then click OK twice. 14 VOLO Installation and Technical Documentation

Provided the alarm panel output has been cleared all doors on the site will return to their earlier status (usually locked). The opening of fire doors still relies on power to the Master and Slave control units so an additional method for releasing the doors is required for fire safety compliance. The following section offers advice on using access control with fire doors. ADVICE ON USING ACCESS CONTROL WITH FIRE DOORS How to identify a fire escape Fire doors in common areas should be marked with regulatory signs. These show a white figure running against a green background, often accompanied by the words Fire exit or Exit and a white direction arrow. Where a door is the only way out of a room, it should be treated as an escape route. Egress through a fire escape door A person must be able to open a fire escape door in the event of an emergency. This is normally through a handle which directly opens the lock. In buildings such as theatres where there are large numbers of occupants, the usual method is by using a crash bar which mechanically pulls open the locking bolts. Where access control equipment is fitted to a fire escape door which includes an overriding mechanical release, there are no extra considerations. Where a fire escape door has an electric lock, you must ensure that there is a fail safe way of opening the door in the event of an emergency. Electronic equipment is more vulnerable to fire damage and potential failure, than mechanical locking. Fail safe opening of fire doors The first step is to use a fail open release for the door. This type of device requires power to lock; it is therefore unlocked when no electricity is supplied. Magnetic locks are normally fail open. The next step is to have a fail safe method of cutting the power to the lock to ensure the lock releases in an emergency. In the event that the access control does not work, there must be an emergency override. In most commercial premises, this is provided by a break glass switch fitted on the 12V lock supply line. Break glass switches are widely available in green and white. Red must not be used as this can be confused with the fire alarm system. In premises where large numbers of people may have to exit at once, doors will almost certainly be released by an interface with the fire alarm system. (FIB. Fire Interface Board). In most cases a local override at each door will also be required. It is possible to link the access control systems to the fire alarm panel. VOLO can send Open door commands to specific door controllers on receipt of the alarm signal. While building owners often specify this, it is NOT a fail safe method of opening the doors as it relies on the access control system being fully functional. A local release method will also be required. The installer should be able to discuss these with the client and to provide information on wiring details as necessary. However the end user, or their architect or other consultant, is responsible for defining the fire escape routes and what the requirements of the local fire officer are, as these will vary from authority to authority. Security issues Where doors are released in the event of a fire alarm the security provided by the access control system may be nullified. A break glass unit used in an unauthorised manner will leave the door unlocked. Where high security is required, consideration should be given to using locks, door contacts or break glass units that are linked to a monitoring system. Fail open locks - additional notes It is also important that the locks used on a fire exit should not jam under side pressure before the door is unlocked. A person can be pushing on a door in panic while operating the mechanical release or break glass switch causing side pressure on the door. This is particularly likely where a number of people arrive at the door in seconds in an emergency. Many electric motorised bolts, solenoid bolts and some electric releases will jam in this situation. Models are available that have been designed, tested and proven to open in these circumstances. Always get the manufacturer s details regarding this. Maglocks are inherently safe in this regard although be wary of cheap models that can stick over time due to residual magnetism in the armature. Wiring Break glass units and fire alarm interfaces Where a fire escape door is opened by electronic means, you must ensure that the door can also be opened in case of a failure of the electronic control. The most common method is to fit a break glass switch that breaks the 12V supply cable to the lock. The door may also be released by a fire alarm system. This is most commonly done through a Fire Interface Board, (FIB) provided by the alarm installer. The FIB provides a switching position from where other systems can be controlled by the fire alarm system. A normally open relay, held closed by the fire system will drop in the event of a fire and break the 12V feed to the lock. Where the escape doors are opened by VOLO, a local break glass switch will also be required. The wiring details for these are shown in a later section. Note that local requirements of fire officers vary throughout the country. For example, in some London boroughs a double pole break glass switch is required. COMMUNICATION MODE SETTINGS This section of the manual covers the selection of the correct communication mode for your VOLO master to communicate with the VOLO server. It is essential to select the correct mode to ensure reliable communication with the VOLO server. Communication modes Your VOLO Master controller can communicate with the cloud server using GSM, Ethernet or Ethernet with GSM as a back-up. If you are connecting your VOLO Master using Ethernet as the primary connection and GSM (mobile data) as a failover back-up then select Auto mode for communication. This is the default mode, as supplied from the factory, so if you are planning to use this mode you needn t make any further changes. If you are connecting using Ethernet only then you must select the Ethernet mode for communication. If you are connecting using GSM only then you must select the GSM mode for communication. Configuring the communication mode For detailed instructions follow the instructions on page Down power the controller and plug in the USB installer tool paying particular attention to how you plug this into the controller (please see below). Now power up the controller. Warning: Make sure the adapter is plugged into both rows of the header pins (2 rows of 3) on the PCB before you proceed. Install the Installer tool software on a Windows PC or laptop Run the Installer tool and once you have configured the correct COM port using the Settings button change the communication mode using the Communication Settings button on the installer tool to the correct mode (see above). Important note: If you subsequently update firmware, using the installer tool, on this unit or perform a Hardware Reset as detailed in Hardware Reset Guide in the VOLO site Help section then you will need to change the communication mode setting again as this will default back to Auto mode. Down power the controller and remove the installer tool. Once removed you can now power up the controller and observe the LED behaviour. In GSM mode for example the modem should be powered straight away, in Auto mode an attempt is first made to connect to Ethernet and after approx 90 seconds with no Ethernet connection the controller will switch to the GSM modem. Checking your mode setting on-line You can now check your mode setting on-line by looking at your controller details page and viewing the Connection Mode. In this case you can see modem which indicates a connection using the GSM modem only (please see below). 20 VOLO Installation and Technical Documentation

TRIGGERS AND ACTIONS Triggers and Actions enable the user to send alerts via email. A trigger is defined by an event type at either a Customer, Controller or Door level. As an example, the Controller Event Connected can be set up as a trigger, which will then action an email to alert the chosen recipient of the Connected event. Likewise a trigger can be set up for a specific door so Door Locked will action an email to the chosen recipients. It is important to remember that not all Triggers and Actions are available to set up at each level, as they may not be relevant. So for example, you will not find a Connected trigger in the Door Trigger list. Likewise you will not find a Door Locked trigger in the Controller trigger list. So please remember to look in the correct list if you cannot find the trigger you are looking for. To set up triggers and actions, take the following steps: Triggers and Actions for a Customer are accessed from the Settings icon at the top of the Cloud page, which will navigate you to the Customer Specific Setting Menu page. In each instance you will arrive at a page similar to the one illustrated below. Use the link Create New Trigger On the next page you will see a drop down list of Events which will act as the trigger. Select the event you wish to use and then click submit. At this stage you will be navigated to the list of Triggers and Actions and in order to create an action you will need to click on the details icon for the Trigger/Event Type. On the following page simply click Create New Action 24 VOLO Installation and Technical Documentation

You will then be navigated to the page below. The Subject will appear as the subject heading for the email sent and the Message will be the content of the email once it is opened by the recipient. The List of recipients should be in the format below; each recipient must be an email address and each recipient must be separated by a new line. Click Submit once this has completed. VOLO HARDWARE RESET In the event you need to perform a full hardware reset, on a master or slave controller, follow the simple steps below. 1. Switch power off on the relevant controller 2. Remove reader 1 3. Connect Reader 1 Red LED terminal to Reader 1 Media Detect terminal 4. Switch power on for the relevant controller 5. OK LED will flash on and off quickly a few times 6. OK LED returns to normal slow flash (equal on and off time) indicating that the controller is back in normal mode and trying to connect to the hosting site. 7. Switch power off on the relevant controller 8. Remove temporary reset connection (step 3) 9. Replace reader 1 (if appropriate) 10.
