BEFORE AFTER Trees and shrubs that once eclipsed the view of the house have been replaced with a variety of shapes to highlight the architecture of the front entry. A TIP FROM JIM: When planting annuals, go BIG. Pass over the small cellpacks and pick the larger, lusher plants for more impact all season long.
Boosting curb appeal After 22 years, this Montgomery home s original landscaping needed more than another trim. The once beautiful bushes and trees had outgrown the space, obscuring the architectural features of the brick-and-stone construction. The landscape objective was to create a low maintenance plan that would highlight the home s beauty. Using a repeating pattern of boxwood hedges as the landscape s backbone, Seiler s used a number of hand-picked ornamental trees, bushes and perennials to give year-round interest. Existing stone walls and large shade trees were incorporated in the new look. BEFORE
More than 20 years of landscape growth completely obscured this beautiful home as seen in the before and after photos. BEFORE AFTER A long bed along the driveway offers a warm welcome to visitors.
BEFORE Seilers Landscaping met their excellent reputation and we are completely satisfied with the results of the project. ~ The Lanes AFTER Seiler s hand-pruned the exsiting birch trees to clear the view and pumped up visual interest with roses and more boxwood.
Spring do-it-yourself tips for homeowners If you have not already prepped your yard for spring, now is definitely the time to get busy. k Check outdoor lighting for winter damage and breaks. k If you decide to prune overgrown trees and shrubs, remember to take special care with spring bloomers such as lilac, viburnums and crabapples. Overpruning can impact flowering this season since many varieties set buds in the fall. k Remove leaves that have blown in over the winter. Soggy clumps of leaves will kill the grass beneath. k Seed bare and sparse areas, paying special attention to oftenmissed property edges and fence lines. k Get mower blades sharpened. k Perk up containers and window boxes with spring flowers like pansies, violas, and sweet alyssum. Jim s Pick of the Season For several years, I have been using and loving pansies and violas. Highly favored during the Victorian period, they have made a strong comeback. The variety is staggering. Blossoms range from very small to a full four inches. Colors abound from traditional yellow and blue violet to vibrant oranges and even black. Because they tolerate cool to frost and now even warmer temperatures, they make the ideal flower choice for early spring in Cincinnati.
