Icopal Tubular Washers Composition Icopal Tubular Washers are blue in colour and precision moulded from high grade polypropylene and extensively tested to ensure resistance to the extreme temperatures and mechanical stresses encountered within the roofing system. The Icopal Tubular Washer System offers many benefits over other traditional fastening methods. Membrane protection Foot traffic or other loads applied to the roof surface can often force the fastener head to pop through the membrane as the insulation beneath compresses. This causes damage to the waterproofing membrane and therefore potential roof leaks into the structure. Thermal transmittance Traditional fastener and metal plate combinations create a path for heat loss from the inside of the building to the outside atmosphere. This seemingly small thermal bridge creates significant heat loss. This loss has to be factored in when calculating U-values to BS EN ISO 6946. This can result in an increase in the insulation thickness to compensate. The Icopal Tubular Washer eliminates this thermal transmittance thereby allowing a reduced thickness of insulation. Insulation thickness Regulations are constantly being upgraded to help reduce a building s carbon usage, leading to thicker insulation being required. Thicknesses of up to 595 mm can easily be accommodated with the Icopal Tubular Washer and Screw Fastener combination. Eliminate unwinding forces The cyclic nature of wind uplift on flat roofing systems can cause standard fastening methods to unwind. Icopal Tubular Washers and Screw Fasteners can allow this cyclic action to occur without causing the fastener to unwind. The telescopic action of a tube and fastener combination that is not locked together removes the risk of the fastener being pushed through a thin deck by foot traffic or materials being placed on the roof surface. - 7 -

Icopal Stress Plates Introduction There are often situations when the Icopal Tubular Washers cannot be utilised, for example when the membrane is not being fastened directly to insulation, such as in a cold roof situation, or when fastening membrane which is applied directly to a plywood overlay. For these situations the Icopal Stress Plates are used. These plates are purpose-designed for use with fasteners from the Icopal range and are manufactured from from a high quality carbon steel. If further advice is required please contact s Technical Services for guidance. Guidance Notes examples only Selecting the correct tube washer To optimize the benefits of the Icopal Tubular Washer system, ideally use the maximum length of tube washer and the minimum fastener length available. In certain applications, such as over-roofing of existing membrane and insulation layers, different tube lengths may be required. The tube washer should be chosen first; then the fastener can be selected. To select the maximum tube length (C) : i) deduct minimum 15 mm from the total build-up of the roof insulation (A) to allow for compression of the insulation (B). ii) choose the tube washer of that length or shorter. eg, For an insulation buildup of 140 mm, the maximum tube length would be 125 mm, and so a 105 mm long Tube Washer would be chosen. Total Roof System build-up (A) Deduct compression tolerance (B) Maximum tube length 140 mm -15 mm 125 mm Chosen tube length (C) 105 mm Selecting the correct fastener length When selecting the correct Icopal Screw Fastener length, allow for the recommended minimum deck penetration or embedment and take into consideration the total build-up of the roof system, including any pressure plate, membrane, separation layers insulation, vapour barriers, existing systems and structural deck. Key: A: Total roof buildup depth B: Insulation compression tolerance ( min 15 mm) C: Tube Washer length D: minimum deck penetration or embedment E: min 20mm allowance for fastener in tube F: Fastener length To select the optimum fastener length (F) for tube washer applications: eg, For a 140 mm build-up over 0.7mm steel deck using a 105 mm tube the minimum fastener length would be 70 mm. i) take the total roof system build-up measurement (A) and deduct the selected tube length (C). ii) iii) allow for deck penetration (D) and then add minimum 20 mm allowance for the fastener within the tube (E). select the fastener at this length or longer. Total roof system build-up (A) Deduct selected tube length (C) Add min. deck penetration/embedment (D) Add allowance for fastener within tube (E) Minimum fastener length (F) 140 mm -105 mm +15 mm +20 mm 70 mm - 10 -

Icopal Fasteners & Accessories A Range of Tubular Washers, Plates and Screw Fasteners Quality Assurance Icopal Tubular Washers, Pressure Plates and Screw Fasteners are supplied under a Quality Management System approved to ISO 9001: 2004 by Swiss Association for Quality and Management Systems. Insulation Attachment 16306 Icopal Thermazone PIR insulation boards should be attached at the minimum rate of 11 tubes & fasteners per 1.2 m x 2.4 m board (unless otherwise specified and approved). An increased density may be recommended depending on project location, height and exposure etc. Delivery and Storage Items are delivered in boxes. Keep the materials in unopened packaging prior to use, reseal any damaged packing. Technical Services Specialist advice and design guidance on all matters relating to Icopal Tubular Washers, Pressure Plates and Screw Fasteners is freely available from our Technical Department at the address below. Membrane Attachment For every mechanically fastened roof, a wind uplift calculation and fastener specification will be required prior to installation of the Icopal roof waterproofing membrane. All calculations are conducted in accordance with BS 6399 or BS EN 1991 parts 1-4, as appropriate. Fastener Application No pre-drilling is necessary for timber and steel decks. Simply insert the fastener through the tubular washer and install with a standard clutch drive electric screw gun (0 2500 rpm). Optimum fastener performance is achieved when fastener is installed perpendicular to the deck and into the top flutes of a steel deck. The TX-25 recess provides excellent drivability and the drill-point design cuts a hole in the steel deck maintaining contact between the deck and the minor diameter of the fastener, increasing back-out resistance.
