These alternative lawn care products have been identified as safer for the environment, pets, and people. Midwest Grows Green is designed to elevate the profile of your eco-friendly products and attract the business of the many individuals who would prefer to use pesticide-free lawn care products but are uninformed about their options. Midwest Grows Green is a partnership between your store and Midwest Pesticide Action Center (MPAC), a non-profit organization that seeks to reduce pesticide usage. Many of the harmful pesticides and artificial fertilizers used in urban lawn and landscape care are purchased at local hardware stores and garden supply centers. Your store is a resource for homeowners who are looking for advice and products to help them manage their outdoor spaces. As part of this partnership, your store will be provided with shelf tags and talkers to indicate eco-friendly products on shelves. Your store does not need to carry any new products we are simply providing labels for the eco-friendly products you already sell. This Eco-Friendly Lawn Care Catalog is a resource that MPAC has compiled so that retailers can easily identify products on the shelf on in inventory that quality for the Eco-Friendly Tag. This Eco-Friendly Shelf Tag is placed on shelving units underneath products listed in this catalog. As part of the Midwest Grows Green Program, MPAC will provide you with these tags free of charge. 1

About this Catalog Increasingly, homeowners are aware of how lawn and landscape practices can negatively affect the environment and the health of their families. We've created Midwest Grows Green to help retailers promote their less-toxic and organic products. Purpose This product list is intended to help retailers participating in Midwest Grows Green identify less-toxic lawn care products. It is also intended to help consumers identify products that will help them manage pests with minimum risk to themselves, their family, pets, and the environment. In addition to lawn pest control products, we also list natural and organic fertilizers that can help promote a healthy lawn that is naturally more resistant to pests. How Do We Define a as Eco-Friendly? This list contains organic, non-synthetic, or least toxic alternatives to conventional lawn and landscape products. This list does not contain: Any products with EPA Acute Toxicity Categories of I or II. Active ingredients classified as known, probable, likely, or possible carcinogens. Reproductive or developmental toxins. Cholinesterase inhibitors. Endocrine disruptors. Active ingredients listed in Section 303(d) of the Clean Water Act. Active ingredients that are considered extremely toxic to birds, bees, fish, or wildlife Active ingredients with a soil half-life ofgreater than 99 days s likely to contaminate groundwater Active ingredients with high soil mobility Any active ingredient that is a persistent, bioaccumulative, toxic substance on the US EPA Waste Minimization Priority List. In developing this list, MPAC used the EcoWise Certified Pesticide Criteria as the basis for our standards. For a complete list of criteria, see Appendix A: Eco-friendly Criteria (p.14). Disclaimer The list does not include all products on the market. It only identifies examples of some commonly used products. Different products with the same active ingredients may be equally suitable. No endorsement of specific brand-name products or guarantee of efficacy is intended. The listing of a particular product only reflects that the active ingredient or formulation passes a set of toxicological screening criteria. All pesticides are intended to be toxic to target organisms, and all pesticides may pose a risk to human health or the environment. 2

Eco-Friendly Maintenance Tools This section of the catalog includes examples of alternative maintenance tools that are excellent additions to a natural lawn care plan. They are less likely to have negative impacts on one's health and the environment. Electric maintenance tools do not give off hazardous emissions, require less maintenance than gas operated tools, and generally are quieter, reducing noise pollution. Also, items that promote environmental friendly lawn and garden practices, such as composters, can be considered for the eco-friendly label. For more complete information about alternative lawn and garden tools and maintenance practices please see the Midwest Grows Green Guide: A Guide to Growing Environmentally Friendly Lawns & Gardens (http://bit.ly/mwgg_guide). Eco-Friendly Maintenance Tools Image Use Composters Electric Blower Instead of throwing away yard and food scrapes they can be composted into an inexpensive nutrient rich soil amendment Electric Blowers are the ecofriendly alternative to gas blowers. Electric Blowers are less noisy, cost friendly, and light weight. Electric Chain Saw Electric Chain Saws requires less maintenance, are light weight, and do not produce any emissions. Electric Hedge Trimmer Electric Mower Electric Hedge Trimmers are the eco-friendly, cost efficient, light weight option to taking care of those hedges. Choose electric when it comes to mowing the lawn. Electric mowers require less maintenance and are ecofriendly. Electric Pole Saw Eliminate the use of a ladder when trimming branches up high. Electric Pole Saws are ecofriendly and light weight. 13

Electric String Trimmer Electric String Trimmers are light weight, require less maintenance, and are the cost efficient eco-friendly alternative. Garden Nets Mulching Mower Eco-friendly and humane way to keep rodents out of the vegetable garden Mulching mowers cut the turf grass into fine pieces allowing the clippings to be easily decomposed by the lawn's microbes. Rain Barrels To collect rainwater that can be used to water lawns and gardens Reel Mower Reel mowers are 100% ecofriendly. They are quite and great for mower smaller city lawns. Water Timers Allows you to set a time for the yard to be water daily. Prevents over watering and forgetting to water. Weeder Weed Barriers Safe and eco-friendly alternative to herbicides. Perfect for spot treating weeds. Weed Barriers are the safer alternative to herbicides. The weed barrier is laid down on the garden bed and mulch is spread across the top. 14

Appendix A: Eco-Friendly Criteria This list of criteria to determine eco-friendly lawn care products is based on the EcoWise Certified Pesticide Criteria. See EcoWise Standards, Appendix A: EcoWise Certified Pesticide Criteria for complete criteria and references (http://www.ecowisecertified.org/pdf/ecowise_standards.pdf). 1) EcoWise Criteria No pesticides with a US EPA Acute Toxicity Category of I (Danger) or II (Warning). No active ingredients classified as known, probable, likely, or possible carcinogens by the US EPA, the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), the National Toxicology Program (NTP), or the California Proposition 65 List. No active ingredients listed as reproductive or developmental toxins on the Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) for the product or the California Proposition 65 List. No pesticides containing cholinesterase inhibitors (organophosphate pesticides such as chlorpyrifos, diazinon, malathion). Chemicals that show evidence of endocrine disruption. No active ingredients listed in Section 303(d) of the Clean Water Act or California s Groundwater Protection List. No active ingredients that are considered to be extremely toxic to birds, bees, fish, or wildlife as indicated by the label, MSDS, or EPA data. No active ingredients with an average soil half-life greater than 99 days as determined by the Oregon State University (OSU) Pesticide Properties Database or other reliable source. No products likely to contaminate groundwater as indicated by the label. No active ingredients with high soil mobility (i.e., a GUS score greater than 3) as determined by the Oregon State University Pesticide Properties Database or other reliable source No active ingredient that is a persistent, bioaccumulative, toxic substance on the US EPA Waste Minimization Priority List. EcoWise uses the listed criteria to screen pesticides for use in an EcoWise Certified service. Only active ingredients are screened for most risk categories because the identities of inert ingredients in the formulation are often not available. The exception is in the case of acute toxicity, for which the EPA requires that the full formulation be tested for lethal effects in animals and the degree of skin and eye irritation and damage. These results are then classified as Category I, II, or III with the greatest toxicity indicated by Category I. 2) Additional Criteria All products list or provide active ingredients (AI). Only commercially sold products are included, as their efficacy can generally be assumed. Home remedies are not included. s are generally considered to be less-toxic alternatives to products that contain an AI identified to threaten water quality, as defined by water quality protection agencies. Natural fertilizers and other non-toxic products that are not direct alternatives to pesticides are included because healthy soils promote healthy lawns, which are naturally more resistant to pests. o Slow release fertilizers or fertilizers made only from animal or plant materials, or minerals are included. o Fertilizers packaged with pesticides (such as "weed and feed" products) are not acceptable. Special credit should be given to the Bio-Integral Resource Center and Our Water, Our World for identifying many brands and products that fulfill these criteria. 15
