Detroit Forensic Techs Beautify Detroit, One Park at a Time Each and every day, the City of Detroit Forensic Technicians wake up with the spirit of service. That was no different on Saturday, June 10th. SEIU 517M Members, with their families and community residents, endeavored to make a difference at Peterson Park on Detroit's Northwest side. "This is the neighborhood that I grew up in. My son plays football at this park. It's important that the community knows that we are with them and that we are here". - Chana Simmon, Forensic Tech C.O.D. "Peterson Park was a site that was processed by the Forensic Techs earlier this year. I was here the day that two teens lost their lives and we are planting flowers to pay tribute to their memory". - Paris Johnson Forensic Tech Trainee, C.O.D. In addition to planting flowers, picking up tires and several bags of debris; Local 517M members passed out bottled water and snacks to the community gathered at the Peterson Park baseball diamond. Special thanks to all who contributed to making this such a successful event. Veterans Honored with Flag Folding Ceremony

A Flag Folding Ceremony was held in the SEIU 517M Lansing office on June 9, 2017 for flags of two deceased WWII veterans. Flags are presented in honor of deceased veterans for their funeral or memorial to the family members present. Over time, these flags may lose the crispness of their original fold or there was no official presentation given. The folding was performed by retired SEIU 517M member and naval reserve Senior Chief Petty Officer Ken Tiffany (pictured Right) and was assisted by SEIU 517M staff member and WWII Reenactor Dave Corrie (pictured Left). The flags were ceremonially unfolded then, according to procedure, were properly re-folded and presented to the next of kin, in this case, SEIU 517M staff Howard Gordon. It was a very moving experience for all involved. As a way to honor our veterans, we will conduct a Flag Folding Ceremony as part of our Annual Meeting on July 21 st in Lansing. Members must RSVP to have their family flags re-folded for them and presented back to them by veterans. SEIU Local 517M Revitalizing Saginaw One Neighborhood at a Time SEIU Local 517M members from the City of Saginaw, GCA Facilities Services, Saginaw Public Schools and Saginaw ISD teamed with several community partners on June 28th for "Light Up the City - Saginaw" in the Houghton-Jones and First Ward Neighborhoods. SEIU Local 517M members were happy to lead the charge in this walk, which was the first of a series of 8 city wide walks that will occur this summer. The purpose of this initiative is to encourage community members and residents to work together helping create safer neighborhoods and communities by walking streets and asking neighbors to turn on their porch lights to help fight crime. If you wish to participate in future walks, contact Clint Bryant in our Saginaw office at 989-797-4243.
