ACTUAL CHALLENGES FOR THE HIGH SCHOOL EDUCATION: EXPERIENCE OF THE ENVIRONMENTAL MANAGEMENT DEPARTMENT (MSU) A.PAKINA Lomonosov Moscow State University

Geography is the science about fundamental laws of interaction between nature and society Geographical Education = Education for SD Movement towards ecological (environmental) geographical education is a typical step for Russian universities Beginning 1 st World Conference on Environmental Education (Tbilisi, Georgia (USSR), 1977) Activity in a frame of UN Decade of Education for SD (2005-2014)

Interpretations of Education for SD Agenda 21 Philosophical interpretation Technocratic Social Economical Cultural (culturological) Environmental Advantage of the Faculty of Geography at the MSU: capability to combine physical and social aspects

Planet Earth is the only place in the solar system and indeed in the universe known to sustain life Knowledge about the planet as a basis for Environmental Education Environmental Education as a basis for transition to Sustainable Development EDUCATION as a basis for SUSTAINABILITY

Education for sustainable nature management at the Department of Environmental management (MSU) is actually based on : traditions of ecological (environmental) education of the Russian Higher School; innovations in a world educational process as a means to implement best international practices for SD achievement in modern Russian HEI

1987 - the Department of Environmental Management was formed at the Faculty of Geography of the Moscow State University Background of the modern system of integrated environmental education at the Department classical geographical knowledge with strong ecological component 2005-2014 UN Decade of Education for Sustainable Development (DESD) Education is an indispensable element for achieving sustainable development.

Response to the modern challenges a key goal of educational process at the Department Education programs Ecology and Nature Management at the Department: Bachelor program (4 years) and Master program (2 years) Along with it there is also education of postgraduate student on 2 programs: Economic, social, political and recreational geography and Geo-ecology

Traditional understanding of Nature Management as a field of interdisciplinary study and complex practical activities Nature Management Nature Resources Use Nature Protection Residuals and Emissions Nature Conditions and Quality Human Settlement

The system of education at the Department includes both study of theoretical aspects of environmental management and practical researches in a field of environment quality Main directions of researches: Environmental economics and nature management (prof. S.Kirillov, ass.prof. A.Pakina); Landscape planning and design (prof. E. Golubeva, ass.prof. T. Korol) Cultural and natural heritage (prof. Yu. Mazurov); Geo-ecological monitoring and impact areas (prof. A. Evseev); Quality of waters and management of marine systems (ass.prof. D. Badyukov) GIS technologies and mapping of environment conditions with special attention to urban areas (ass.prof. T. Vorobieva and T. Zengina) Traditional land use, recreation planning and eco-tourism (senior researchers E. Vorobievskaya and N. Sedova)

Natural and cultural heritage significance was investigated during the Russian-Dutch ecological expeditions (2004-2008). Ecotourism development is one of the effective ways of sustainable use of the pristine nature of the area. Researches in the Russian Arctic Natural heritage of the Taimyr peninsula: challenges for its conservation and sustainable use Photos of the Russian-Dutch expedition to the Taimyr Peninsula. Leader Bart Ebbing (Alterra Institute, Netherlands)

Municipal level of researches: quality of cities environment Land use and functional zoning of the Vologda city, based on data of contamination of soil and other components of the environment* Prof. Vorobyova T. *Vorob yova T. Municipal GIS: informational support of environmental control. Vologda, 2006.

Along with lectures and seminars the curriculum of the Department of Environmental Management includes summer field training on the bases of the Faculty's field stations. 1 st year students have their complex geographical field study (9 weeks duration) at the Satino field station, located in Kaluga region. 2 nd year students receive a practical knowledge on the field stations in several areas of Russia and abroad. Students enrolled in our department, have a practical training in three regions, different both in natural conditions, and in type of human impact on environment: Krasnovidovo station at the Moscow region, Crimea peninsula and Kola Peninsula.

Winter s field trips in a frame of the students research society and summer expeditions of the Department at the Baikal area (from 2011 till p.t.). Supervisors Vorobievskaya E., PakinaA. Significant part of the study ecosystem conditions, social and environmental researches in local communities, etc. Photos of the Department of Environmental Management (Faculty of Geography, Lomonosov Moscow State University) Web-site http://www.rpp-msu.com/

In addition to the field stations of the Faculty, the students have an opportunity to have their field training in scientific institutions and different companies after 3 rd year of education. Wide range of professional contacts includes: 1/ Ministry of natural resources and ecology of Russian Federation, regional ministries and administrations; 2/ production companies in different regions of Russia and abroad (exploring companies in Western Siberia, Baikal area, Arctic regions, agricultural companies, areas of tourism and recreation development, etc.) 3/ specially protected natural areas (zapovedniks/reservats, national parks, World Heritage sites) 4/ scientific and research institutions in different cities of Russia and CIS (Ukraine, Kazakhstan): Institute of urban ecology, Institute of cultural and natural heritage by name D. Likhachev, Institue of transport economy and policy (Moscow), Baikal institute of nature management and Limnology Institute of Siberian branch of Russian Academy of Science (Baikal region) and many others.

Challenges we meet : New Environment: not only physical, but also informational, affecting all sides of human life New Society: featured by strong disproportions in level of life and access to material (and nonmaterial!) goods New Students: very mobile in social life and in information use New Geography: not description, but understanding the processes leading to division for many fields (meteorology, biogeography, geochemistry, social geography etc.) and their unity New Education: fast and technological, multyand interdisciplinary

Searching for new ways of education development we also must answer on demand from practice: one of the main criterion can our graduates meet the challenges of actual practical activities?

What we can do? Include new courses Engineering and environmental surveys Environmental design and project Energy and resources efficiency GIS-technologies New methods of education (international databases, video lectures, distant education and training, technical means for remote consulting) along with traditional approaches (field training etc.)

Traditional forms of education are supplemented by innovative form, such as remote education and training programs for professionals. Education programs are aimed to improve the skills of professionals working in respective fields. Graduates are provided by a certificate of completion the training courses at MSU. Courses are available for the Russian citizens living in all regions of Russia - from Kaliningrad to Petropavlovsk- Kamchatsky and Vladivostok, as well as for neighboring countries (Belarus, Kazakhstan)

Dissemination of knowledge and experience Programs of additional professional educations: «Ecology and Environmental Management» and «Landscape aesthetics and design» (500 hours ) or programs of professional training (72 hours) Distant education program «Ecology and Environmental Management» (http://de.msu.ru): original courses started in 2008

Development of cooperation with Department of Civil Engineering, Tokyo University (Japan) through series of Russian-Japanese Collaboration Seminars for Sustainable Environment (Moscow, 2013 Tokyo, 2015) The key priority student exchange programs Professor M. Shimamura (Tokyo University) and E. Pan kova (MSU). Tokyo, 2015 Participants of the 1 st Russian-Japanese Collaboration Seminar for Sustainable Environment. MSU, Moscow, 2013 Professor Yu.
