Dear colleagues! We are very pleased to invite you to participate in the 9 th International Congress of the Working Group on Soils of Urban, Industrial, Traffic, Mining and Military Areas, SUITMA 9. SUITMA 9 will be held in Moscow, Russia on May 22-27 2017. The congress will be hosted by the Peoples Friendship University of Russia (RUDN University, www.rudn.ru). This year s theme for the congress will be «Urbanization: a challenge and an opportunity for soil functions and ecosystem services» Urbanization is currently among the most important land-use change trends globally. According to FAO and UN predictions, more than 6 billion people are expected to live in cities by 2050. In response to these issues, policy agendas are focusing on achieving and maintaining optimally functioning and sustainable use of urban ecosystems, for present and future generations. Soils of Urban, Industrial, Traffic, Mining and Military Areas (SUITMAs) differ substantially from natural zonal counterparts in their physical, chemical and biological features, their performed functions, and supported services. SUITMA is a working group of the International Union of Soil Science (IUSS); a world leading scientific community dedicated to investigating urban and technogenic soils. The SUITMA working group joins urban soil experts from all over the world. SUITMA has organized international congresses every two years since 2001 to address different aspects of urban soil science. Eight fascinating congresses were organized in Europe, Africa, USA, Mexico and China. In 2017, SUITMA 9 will be held in Russia for the very first time and will be hosted by the RUDN University in Moscow city.

CONGRESS VENUE Similar to the cities of Mexico, Cairo and New-York, that hosted the SUITMA conferences in the years past, Moscow is among the largest world megalopolises exposed to continuous urban development. The host, RUDN, is an international classical university. At RUDN (www.rudn.ru), our key priorities are educating young people in excellent worldly career perspectives, preparing them to become highly qualified experts in various professional fields, and joining people of different nationalities, races and religions through knowledge. SCIENTIFIC PROGRAM SUITMA congresses traditionally focus on different aspects of environmental assessment, monitoring, and management of urban and technogenic soils. SUITMA 9 will continue this discussion. The monitoring, analysis and assessment of the effects of urbanization on soil functions and services will be addressed by different sections of the congress. However, particular attention will focused on finding solutions to the environmental consequences of urbanization. Best management practices such as management and design of urban green infrastructure, waste management, water purification, and reclamation and remediation of contaminated soils, will be discussed in context of sustainable urban development. The SUITMA 9 congress will address the following key fundamental and applied goals: - to summarize the experiences and existing methodologies in analyses, assessments, and modeling of anthropogenic effects on soils and the related ecological risks to the sustainability of soils of urban, industrial, traffic, mining and military areas (SUITMAs) to explore the potential of SUITMAs to provide key functions and ecosystem services The scientific program will include a plenary session, 14 thematic sessions and 6 round tables. The working language of the congress is English. For the plenary sessions and for the selected thematic sessions, simultaneous translation service will be provided.

Thematic sessions S.1 Problems of SUITMA diagnostics and classification S.2. Spatial-temporal variability of SUITMAs features and processes S.3. Urban soils functions and ecosystem services: from concepts to application S.4. Bioremediation and reclamation of soils contaminated with oil-products, heavy metals and radionuclide S.5 Genesis, geography, soil features and processes in SUITMAs S.6. Biodiversity in urban soils: threats and opportunities S.7. Policies and strategies to support and maintain urban soils quality S.8. Environmental impacts assessment, standardization and certification of urban soils S.9. Soil ecological monitoring in urban ecosystems S.10. Biogeochemical cycles in urban soils: climate change perspective S.11. Soil as the basis for urban farming S.12. Urban soil as a cultural heritage S.13S. Urbanization and sustainable development in Europe (Jean Monnet Session) S.14S. Modeling and projecting sustainable development of the megalopolises (supported by the New Moscow administration). Round tables T1. Advanced techniques in monitoring, assessment and modeling urban soils/ T2. GIS and decision-support systems to manage urban soil resources / T3. Ecological engineering of sustainable urban soils and soil constructions / T4. SUITMAs in education process T5. Analysis of urban soils ecosystem services as an opportunity for scientists to communicate to stakeholders and policy-makers T6. Environmental challenges and innovations in monitoring and soil reclamation for oil and gas production, transporting and processing Round tables will be led by the invited speakers and will generate discussion. All SUITMA-participants are welcome to propose oral and poster presentations for the thematic sessions.

FIELD TOURS SUITMA 9 will provide 4 one-day field tours and two post-congress tours. One-day field tour (May 24) Lomonosov Moscow State University: Soils on 60-year old technogenic deposits Visits to urban gardens where soils have a long history of manure applications. Forest, agricultural, and urban landscapes of Moscow City. RusFluxNet complex environmental monitoring sites at the Timiryazev Russian Agrarian State University. New Moscow; pursuing sustainable development. Recreational areas, plant nurseries and green infrastructure in New Moscow. Post-congress tours «A visit to the Czar of Soils». Natural, urban, and agricultural landscapes of the Central Chernozemic region (May 27-30) «North Palmyra». Technogenic landscapes of Russian North-West and Saint Petersburg beauties (May 27-29)

CONGRESS MATERIALS Congress abstracts must be submitted in English via the on-line registration system on the congress web-site (www.suitma-russia.com). The author of the abstract may choose the session and the presentation form (oral or poster). The abstract must contain novel research material relevant to the scope of the session and should not exceed 3 pages (Times New Roman, print 12, single interval), including figures, tables and a reference list. Submitted materials will be reviewed by the scientific committee. The approved abstracts will be announced and published in the SUITMA 9 Proceedings. Abstracts will be judged by the committee to select authors for a special issue of a high-rank per-reviewed journal. Currently SUITMA 9 organizing committee is discussing the possibilities to publish the conference papers in the special issues of several international journals.
