Description and Operation Manual 2. Technical Introduction The fire gas detectors GSME of the ADICOS series serve for the detection of smoldering and open fires. The selective recording of smoldering fires is based on the principle of recognizing fire characteristic gas emissions. To test the function of the gas detectors the fire typical gas emissions have to be simulated with the aid of a Test Unit. To be able to utilize the total capacity of the GTL 100 Fire Detector Test Unit and to carry out correct test you should get acquainted with the operation of the Test Unit. The operation of the Test Unit is simple and safe. A testing procedure only takes a short time. With the aid of directly generated pyrolysis gases (low temperature carbonization gas), which are generated in the Test Unit, all types of ADICOS fire gas detectors can be safely triggered. Especially the detector types GSME-HC or L1 can be triggered, as they do not react to the gases CO or H 2, but to fire specific hydrocarbons. Remark: Please read the installation and operation manual before installation and initial operation of the units or the total system. Understanding the operating principle and the interfaces within the fire detection system of the units makes it easier to eliminate errors in case of faulty installation or in case of malfunctions caused by unfavorable marginal conditions. ATTENTION Electro-static conditions may endanger components Follow handling procedures The unit contains assemblies that are sensitive to electro-static conditions. Installation, repair and service have to be carried out by expert personnel. Electrostatic discharge when touching the internal assemblies may lead to the destruction of components. When replacing the sensor head special care has to be taken to avoid electrostatic discharges, as the sensor head contains electronic components that may be destroyed by electrostatic tensions. Damages of this kind are not covered by the guarantee. A0026_00 GV 5

Description and Operation Manual 3. Application Due to the special construction of the Test Unit it is possible to reach and test even detectors, which are placed in hard-to-get-to reach installation positions. The test includes the complete check of the gas sensors in the sensor head. The fire detection system remains in the normal operation mode during the test. It has to be ensured that the alarm messages of the respective fire detectors forwarded during the test do not lead to the release of a true fire alarm. Therefore all messages have to be recorded separately. Special Characteristics: low weight operation not depending on the power supply telescope pipe with long extension arm directly generated pyrolysis gases (low temperature carbonization gas) simple and safe handling safe release of the fire gas detectors Example: The detectors installed at the ceiling can easily be reached with the telescope pipe 6

Description and Operation Manual 4. Set-up Equipment Characteristics (1) The Test Unit is equipped with a ventilation system, with which the residual gas can be flushed out of the unit after the test procedure. (2) The smoldering rods for the fire gas generation are safely stored in a protection cylinder. There will be no danger if the Test Unit is accidentally dropped or tipped over. (3) Filters are inserted to avoid a deposit of tar or similar substance in the Test Unit. (4) The length of the Test Unit can be adjusted in four steps as required for the respective height of the ceiling. The telescope rod can be extended from a minimum of 1750 mm to a maximum of 4200 mm. A stopper at each joining peace provides for safe support. 5 1 3 2a 2 2b 4 Individual Components: 1. Container for the collection of smoldering gases 2. Smoldering rods with holder, protection cylinder (2a) and filters (2b) 3. Ventilation Pipe Depending on the switch position the smoldering gas is either collected ( NORMAL = ventilator off), blown through the telescope pipe to the detector ( SMOKE ) or the telescope pipe is flushed with fresh air ( EXHAUST ) 4. Telescope pipe with adapter for funnel 5. Funnel acts as protection against cross-flowing ambient air 7

Description and Operation Manual 5. Initial Operation 1. Installation: (1) Pipe Connector (2) Control Pipe (3) Holder for Smoldering Rod Take the Test Unit out of its carrier bag and assemble it as shown in the drawing. 2. Instructions for the Test Procedure: (1) (2) (3) 1. Light a smoldering rod and place it in the combustion tube. 2. Set the control pipe on the position SMOKE and check if smoke leaks out of the tip of Test Unit. If smoke is coming out set the position NORMAL normal. 3. Extend the telescope rod to the length required to teach the detector to be tested at its respective position on the ceiling. 4. Place the tip of the Test Unit directly under the detector to be tested and set the control pipe on the position SMOKE. The test phase starts now. 5. Please set the Test Unit on EXHAUST SMOKE to flush residual gases out of the unit after successful function test of the detector. 6. Reset the control type to the position NORMAL until you start the next test procedure. 3. Remarks Only use specified smoldering rods. Unscrew the holder (3) for the insertion of the smoldering rods. In case of strong airflow attention has to be paid to ensure a suitable protection respectively sealing by the funnel. Attention: Let the holder (3) cool down before you change the smoldering rods. If the ventilator does not move the batteries have to be replaced. 1. Unscrew the Test Unit between the ventilation pipe and the telescope pipe. Open the battery compartment and exchange the batteries. 2. Pay attention to the correct polarization of the batteries. An instruction sign in the battery compartment shows the correct direction of each battery. 3. If no smoke leaks out of the tip of the Test Unit the batteries were not placed correctly or in the false sequence in the battery compartment. 6.2 Replacement of the Smoldering Rods The fire gas generation is carried out with an incense rod having a diameter of 7 mm and a length of 150 mm. The incense rod generates fire gases for a period of approximately 2.5 hours. Remove the holder for the safety cylinder out of the combustion pipe to replace the incense rod. Take off the filter cap at the other end of the protection cylinder. Remove the holder and insert a new incense rod. Remarks: Install the incense rod upright and make sure that it is well secured. Do not simply throw smoldering incense rods on the floor. Always throw burning material into a fire-proof container or into an ash box Only use specified incense rods and filters Make sure that the incense rod has been lit correctly before you place it in the Test Unit. Otherwise the rod may go out again in the Test Unit. Store the material free from humidity at in a dry place. A wet incense rod is hart to light and goes out easily. 9

Description and Operation Manual 6.3 Replacement of the Filters Two filters are inserted to avoid that tar or similar substances settle in the Test Unit. A dirty filter should be replaced immediately. It is recommended to replace the filters after an operation period of 5 hours. In any case the filters are to be exchanged after two incense rods have smoldered away. To replace the filters remove the filter cap from the safety cylinder. Remove the dirty filters and place two new ones in the cap. 6.4 Cleaning Clean the combustion pipe after regular use. Use pure suds for cleaning. Make sure that the holes in the filter cap are always free as otherwise the incense rod easily stops smoldering. 10
