The DSA Academy Joy Guzman, DSA Academy Manager C.A.S.H. 29 th Annual Conference February 28, 2008 DSA Academy Mission To promote quality design and construction of educational facilities and other governmental buildings in California by providing centralized training DSA Academy Goal To serve as a major learning resource for all parties involved in the planning, design and construction process 2

Training Quotes We Like: Man s mind stretched to a new idea never goes back to its original dimensions. Oliver Wendell Holmes To the mind that wishes to learn, everything is a lesson. Anonymous 3 Building the Academy

What it Took: Dedicated Staff Executive Support Training Partner Subject Matter Experts Lead Developers and Instructors 5 Why Is an Academy Needed?

To promote Consistency in the interpretation of codes & regulations 7 To promote Quality Design & Construction to reduce the loss of life and property and to design high performance educational facilities 8

DSA reviews 3,800 projects each year for code compliance in the fields of Structural, Accessibility, and Fire & Life Safety. 9 That s about 316 projects reviewed per month, or 79 projects each week, being reviewed by DSA for compliance with California codes and regulations regarding Structural, Accessibility and Fire & Life Safety. 10

In addition to DSA, there are many other stakeholders: project developers, designers, construction managers, school district staff, and others. 11 So, WHY is an Academy needed? 12

Because if DSA and all the other stakeholders are learning the codes, regulations, processes and procedures together 13 Together We ll Produce Safer Schools: More quickly More efficiently And more cost-effectively 14

Another reason we need an Academy: 15 To promote Structural Safety in California schools 16

After so many years, we sometimes forget why DSA was given the responsibility for ensuring structural safety in California s schools. Let me remind you... 17 March 10, 1933 The Long Beach Earthquake hit at 5:55 pm Estimated magnitude: 6.25 18

(place photo here) Jefferson Junior High School 70 schools were destroyed. 120 schools suffered major damage Had the earthquake hit during school hours, the loss of life could have been staggering. 20

Before Franklin Jr. High School After 21 (place photo here) John Muir School

Exactly one month after the earthquake, the Field Act was passed, giving California s Division of the State Architect responsibility for reviewing school plans and overseeing construction of all public schools. 23 Since then, there have been no injuries or deaths due to structural failure, from an earthquake in a building certified under the authority of the Field Act. 24

What Classes are Available through the Academy?
