home & interior decor A s a professional person living alone, your living space should not only look its most beautiful best, but also be your haven. An oasis where you escape to rejuvenate body and soul to face the demands of your career, the expectations of society and the related stress, and the harsh reality of our ailing economy. And the best way to achieve this is to surround yourself with things you love and cherish; things that portray your individuality and your style. Your living space is truly an extension of who you are as well as an ode to your achievements in life. For many of us, colouring this palette can be daunting because we tend to think that we need vast space and expensive objets d`art to beautify and personalise our space. Many people believe that re-decorating is an expensive exercise way beyond their reach and budget. But, with the clever use and combination of colours, striking lighting effects, and some carefully placed decorations it is possible, no matter the size of your accommodation! This winter, a local fabric designer living alone reveals how he has created a haven of tranquillity in his small (75m² ) apartment. Optimal usage of the available space in this two-bedroom apartment, accompanied by key multi-functional pieces of furniture, creates a sense of space that is not only functional, but also aesthetically pleasing, while his use of lighting (including candles) to create ambiance completely changes the look and feel of the same room at varying times of day. 14 ATLANTIC SEABOARD VIEWS WINTER AUTUMN2017 2017
Using the same wallpaper in the different rooms as a focal point not only creates a statement wall in each room, but also carries the general colour scheme of the interior throughout the apartment, presenting it as one unit instead of four separate rooms. Each room s individual identity is achieved by the clever use of accessories. The owner emphasises the ease and cost-effectiveness of `re-decorating each space regularly by simply changing accessories each season; a smart way to have a `new look home every season without spending too much money! Colour your world Despite having the same type and colour blinds in front of all the windows (lounge, kitchen and both bedrooms), each space has been given its own individual look and feel by simply hanging a different colour curtain in each room. This unique look is continued through the artful arrangement of scatter cushions of varying shapes, sizes, fabrics and colours, and the use of different coloured and patterned linen in each bedroom. The bright turquoise carpet [picked up from a national retailer offering branded home décor bargains] underneath the coffee table in the sitting area, provides a pop of vivid colour that immediately draws the eye and provides a direct line of sight to the bright yellow, custommade chair and the elegant silver floor lamp next to it. The dining area features a custom made dark wood table accompanied by Eames chairs [available from Chair Crazy in Woodstock] with polyproplene (plastic) seat and wooden frame. Light up your world The innovative use of lighting and lighting features (light fittings, lamp shades and type of lights) has resulted in a wonderful play of light, shade and ambiance throughout the apartment. Each room features a different style of light fitting as the main light [all supplied by Eagle Lighting and some customised by them], which is further enhanced by more specific lighting applicable to the style of each room. In the main bedroom, two tall silver reading lamps on the nightstands, complemented by different objets d art [best place to find these is at a local retailer offering home décor items at bargain prices and/or a flea market], provide symmetry and character. The guest bedroom s medium height table lamp with an embroidered lampshade emphasises the subtle embroidery on the bed linen, and provides a lovely warm glow. home & interior decor Location, location, location The owner has successfully mastered the art of placing the right décor item in the right place, paying attention to the small details. Strategically placed plants; a few collector s items (see our Autumn 17 issue for unique ideas); uniformly framed posters and pictures grouped together; clusters of objet d`art in varying shapes and sizes but of the same basic colour; and the clever (yet functional) display of books and CDs throughout the apartment, displayed against a backdrop of the interior s base colour, binds every room into a unit while simultaneously creating the illusion of a bigger space. All these accessories and combinations are not only functional, but also aesthetically pleasing and effectively reflect the owner s style and personality.
