SHIPBUILDING FIRE PROTECTION WATER MIST SYSTEM

The KJ FireOff Water Mist System The special conditions at sea mean that safety is an incredibly important issue for ships. Ships are subject to a whole range of fire risks, which means fire protection on board has to be very effective. Suppression in an early phase in case of a fire, is absolutely imperative. Since more than 100 years sprinkler-systems are in use to detect fires in an early stage and to effectively suppress fires as soon as possible. Over many years the detection and release was initiated through a soldered strut. Today a glass-bulb, filled with a fluid, which expands at calculable temperatures and bursts, the bulb releases the suppression-process. Classical fire sprinklers with so called deflectors for water distribution, produce large water drops. So the water consumption is relatively large. Also water damage is an issue in case of a fire. A very valuable solution is water mist, which reduces the water consumption heavily. The drop-size is just a small part compared to sprinklers. There are several methods to generate water mist. KJ FireOff Water Mist is produced just over the normal pump pressure based on the patented unique design of the nozzles. KJ FireOff Water Mist Systems has an excellent performance in the field of fire protection. Power Consumption (kw) System Pressure (bar) Water Consumption l/min/m2 Comparison of water mist and standard sprinkler systems KJ FireOff Water Mist System Regular Sprinkler High Pressure Sprinkler Suppression of Water Mist is always based on three elements Cooling of surroundings and of combustion gas. The little water droplets have just a small mass compared to the droplets outer surface. This makes it easy for the fire to heat up and evaporate water. This process needs a lot of energy. The activation of KJ FireOff Water Mist, does this way provide high local cooling, which will reduce radiant heat of a fire and the intensity of hot combustion gasses. The activation of KJ FireOff Water Mist, does this way reduce the risks of a flashover. A dominant effect is being achieved while water evaporates around the flame zone, providing large cooling and an inert atmosphere smothering the combustion process. 1 liter of water is equivalent to 1700 liter of water vapor. The heat of fire causes small water droplets to evaporate into steam. Water vapors behavior is similar to an inert gas, and does locally reduce the oxygen concentration. When the oxygen level is below 13% the combustion process is interrupted and the fire is smothered to extinguish. The KJ FireOff Water Mist System is very effective in small enclosures like cabins. The suppression process in case of KJ FireOff Water Mist is based on three elements and their interaction: Cooling Radiant heat reduction Local oxygen inerting Accomodation/Public Spaces Engine room TF Engine room LA Spacing Application 16 m 2 Cabins, pendent Nozzle 16 m 2 Shops/ Restaurants other Public Spaces 18 m 2 Cabins, Sidewall Nozzle 4,5 m 2 Corridors & Stairways 16 m 2 RoRo, Shopping, Storage 9 m 2 Full Protection TF Installation Height (2,0 m to wall) Product KJ FireOff OHM-L1 2,00 m 5,00 m KJ FireOff OHM-L2 (0,10 0,20 m beneath Ceiling Surface) (0,75 to wall) KJ FireOff OHM-SWC (Picture 2 f.l.)
