Instruction Sheet P/N Platen Heater Pad Replacement WARNING: Allow only qualified personnel to perform the following tasks. Observe and follow the safety instructions in this document and all other related documentation. 1. Description The Nordson platen heater pads are an integral part of the 5000 Series Drum Melters. This instruction sheet describes the replacement of the platen heater pads. Six heater pads are mounted underneath the follower plate. It is recommended to review your 5000 Series Drum Melter manual before performing the following replacement procedure. CAUTION: Use only original Nordson replacement parts. The use of non-nordson platen heater pads may result in leakage. Material Required Gather the following items before replacing the platen heater pads: A piece of sheet metal or similar heat-resistant material at least the size of the platen diameter to protect the frame base plate. Wood blocks or similar items to secure and support the crossover in place. Nordson platen heater pads. For part number information, refer to the list of replacement platen heater pads in your system manual. TFE joint sealant (included with replacement heater pad) Heat conductive paste Never Seez Torque wrench If a material drum is installed on the unit, remove the drum as described in the Drum Changing section of your system manual. 1998 Nordson Corporation
2 Platen Heater Pad Replacement 2. Heater Pad Replacement Before replacing the heater pads, perform the following steps: 1. Place a piece of heat-resistant material on the frame or across the drum hold-down assembly under the platen to support the platen assembly. 2. Use the elevator control valve to lower the platen to within 12.7 cm (5 in.) of the heat-resistant material. 3. Secure the crossover in place. Cover Plate Removal See Figure 1. 2 3 2 3 1. If the defective heater pad (4) is on the pump/manifold side of the platen, remove both cover plates (1) by removing all hex head screws (2) and washers (3). 1 4 If the defective heater pad is on the opposite side of the platen, remove the hex head screws (2) and washers (3), securing that half of the cover plate (1) to the follower plate. 2. See Figure 2. Carefully remove the cover plate half (halves) to expose the wiring connections. Fig. 1 Cover Plate Removal 1. Cover plate 2. Hex head screw 3. Washer 4. Heater pad 4601118 If the defective heater pad (7) is on the pump/manifold side of the platen, loosen the manifold clamp nut and remove or reposition the clamp as necessary (not shown). Use a flat blade screwdriver or similar tools to pry the pump manifold up slightly. 3. Remove the thermostat (1) and the securing screws, if the thermostat is located on a defective heater pad (7). 4. Remove the RTD sensor (2), its cover plate, and securing screws, if the sensor is located on a defective heater pad. 1998 Nordson Corporation

Disconnect the wires from the heater wire connecting posts (8). 2. Remove the three socket head cap screws (not shown) that secure the heater pad (7) to the follower plate (6). 3. Lower the defective heater pad away from the follower plate. 4. Remove traces of joint sealant (9) from the bottom of the follower plate (6) where the defective heater pad was in place. 5. Repeat the above steps for each defective heater pad. 1998 Nordson Corporation
4 Platen Heater Pad Replacement Heater Pad Installation To install the new heater pad, perform the following steps: 1. Apply fresh joint sealant (9) to the top surface of the new heater pad (7), creating a completely sealed ring where it mates with the follower plate (6). 2. Position the new heater pad (7) in place under the follower plate (6), aligning the holes in the heater pad and the follower plate. 3. Apply Never Seez to the threads of the three socket head cap screws (not shown), securing the heater pad in place. Tighten screws to 41 Nm (30 ft-lb). Attach the ceramic washers, lock washers and nuts to the heater wire connecting posts (8). 4. Apply Loctite to the lower nuts and let the Loctite cure before attaching the top nut. 5. Connect the wires to the connecting posts (8) and attach the top nuts and washers. Hold the lower nut with a wrench while tightening the top nut to 2.7 + 0.2 Nm (24 + 2 in.-lb). 6. If the thermostat (1) was removed earlier, coat its mating surface with heat conductive paste and secure the thermostat to its heater pad. 7. If the RTD sensor (2) was removed earlier, coat it with heat conductive paste and secure it to its heater pad. 8. Repeat the above steps for each new heater pad. Cover Plate Installation See Figure 1. To install the cover plate, perform the following steps: 1. Remove traces of old joint sealant from the top of the follower plate and from the top surface of the column support flange where they mate with the cover plate (1). 2. Apply fresh joint sealant to the top surface of the follower plate, forming a completely sealed ring where it mates with the cover plate. 3. Apply fresh sealant to the top surface of the column support flange, forming a completely sealed ring where it mates with the cover plate. 4. Apply Never Seez to the threads of the hex head screws, securing the cover plate halves in place. Tighten the hex head screws. NOTE: If the cover plate on the manifold half of the platen was removed, use a screw driver or similar tool to pry the pump manifold up slightly so the cover plate half can be installed. 1998 Nordson Corporation
