INTRODUCTION WEEK 6 (INDONESIA) 1. INTRODUCTION 2. THE DEFINITION OF 3. THE VARIETY OF 4. THE CULTURE OF 5. THE DEVELOPMENT OF DEPARTMENT OF LANDSCAPE ARCHITECTURE FACULTY OF AGRICULTURE BOGOR AGRICULTURAL UNIVERSITY TROPICAL AREA MAP One third of the world, climate character & typical culture Declination TROPICAL AREA 23.5 o LU 22 Desember 21 Maret Equator 21 Maret 22 Juni 23 September Tropika Cancer Tipe Lokal The area within a line of tropic of cancer & tropic of capricorn Crossed by the equator Has 2 seasons (dry, rain) Climate (dry, moist, heavy rain) 23.5 o LS TROPICAL CLIMATE Between 23.5 o N (Tropika Cancer) until 23.5 o S (Tropika Capicorn) Sometimes expended to 3 on until 3 o S. Tropika Capicorn Tipe Equatorial Tipe Monsoon Biota (diverse, unique, some rare) The land is relatively not very fertile The dynamics of the process of its formation Diverse biota (vegetation and wildlife) are still in large number and area so it is declared as the lungs of the world 1
WHY SHOULD BE STUDIED? The wealth of biodiversity in the sea Some of the wealth of plants on land (landscape architecture needs) Indonesia is large tropical islands country Have a variety of forms & beauty of the natural tropic landscape Rich of biological resources/biota (megabiodiversity), typical Indonesian species ( Komodo, hog deer, orang utan, tarsisius monkey, rasamala, etc) Rich of culture that is related to nature (etnobotany & agriculture) Tropical landscape of Indonesian Archipelago: Beautiful & exclusive but fragile and sensitive to changes & physical disturbance IF IT S UNKNOWN AND NOT STUDIED We will not appreciate it We will lose the priceless natural & cultural resources The exotic small islands If the landscape been planned and managed well For foods For recreation For place of living Landslide If the landscape have not been planned & managed well Polluted 2. THE DEFINITION OF LANDSCAPE Natural landscape Order of land with all elements located above (soft & hard elements) that make a form and view that can be enjoyed with the senses of human beings both physically and psychic TROPIC Around Equator area Has 2 seasons (dry, rain) Climate (dry, moist, hard rain) Biota (diverse, unique, some rare) The dynamics of the process of its formation 2
IS CHARACTERIZED BY: Rich of greens and various plants Bright biota colors ( leaves, flowers, animals, etc) Various of view High humidity Water element Fast dynamics/changes Natural material of hard element/structure regarding the nature INSIDE THE TROPICAL FOREST: Various wildlife live or rest on each strata of trees or plants layers We can see various of: Kinds Shape Color Scents Sounds Textures etc Natural Tropical Man-made Tropical 3. VARIETY OF 4. CULTURE Man-made Tropical BASED ON NATURAL CHARACTERISTIC : Natural, Semi Natural, Built BASED ON GEOGRAPHIC : Island (small), Coastal, Beach, Mountain, Hill, Valley BASED ON REGIONAL ORDER/CULTURAL AREA : Rural, City, Regional BASED ON THE DEVELOPMENT ACTIVITY : Recreation, Tourism, Education, Cultural, Historical Relationship betweet human and tropical environment How human manage their local natural resources wisely (local wisdom) to support social economic to improve their welfare Social cultural system (Living system, habits, customs, norms) Agricultural/Rural City/ Service & trade Settlement Resort, etc 3
EXAMPLE FOR CULTURAL LANDSCAPE: TRADITIONAL SETTLEMENT TRADITIONAL VILLAGE Rural Resort 5. DEVELOPMENT POTENTIALS: greens, diversity, beauty, uniqueness, exclusive CONSTRAINTS: sensitive, small area scale, landslide DANGER/HAZARDS: ring of fire, earthquake, tsunami, climate anomali FOR DEVELOPING : Optimize the potentials and constraints, avoid tropical danger/hazard Avoid over carrying capacity Specify the sensitivity zoning area & built suitability zoning Optimize the natural resources/ local landscape WHAT SHOULD BE NOTICED IN MANAGING 1. Tropical ecosystem should be maintained, negative impact should be avoided. 2. Wild plants and animals as a part of an ecosystem should be kept and protected. 3. Non renewable resources should be used economically & guaranteed the availability for a long time. 4. Natural regeneration should be maintained & organized with biological engineering. 5. In planning and designing an area, use environmentally sensitive design/ green design. BIOLOGICAL ENGINEERING Engineering technique biologically Concept application & engineering method (physics, chemistry, mathematic, computer) to solve life science/biological problems Should be known the natural character & the elements that is used Plants are the main element Example: Flushing out the liquid waste, plants to reduce the temperature, green house 4
ENVIRONMENTALLY SENSITIVE DESIGN/ GREEN DESIGN Let the land shape the plan Planning/design development should follow natural pattern Low impact development (LID) THANK YOU Save Our Biota & Tropical 5
