What are Master Gardeners??
Oregon State University Education Research Extension Master Gardeners are part of Extension
Master Gardeners are Volunteers trained by OSU Extension Service agents and other specialists to extend sciencebased, unbiased information to homeowners
To become a Master Gardener you must 1. Complete the training program 2. Write the final exam 3. Sign all relevant forms 4. Volunteer 60 hours of duty
History of the Master Gardener Program 1973- started in Washington 1976- started in Oregon Lane/Clackamas counties 36 people 2009: all 50 states & 4 Canadian provinces ~94,800 active volunteers (from the Extension Master Gardener National survey)
Impact of OSU Master Gardeners 2012 Active program in 29 of 36 counties 32 full- and part-time OSU employees 4,160 active volunteers Made 186,494 contacts with Oregonians Volunteered 194,898 hours Results in 95.5 full-time employees or $4.2 million contribution to OSU
