Sentence Ima Student Ms. Cummings Production Horticulture 8 January 2011 Photinia fraseri The plant that I am propagating will be Photinia fraseri, commonly known as Red Tipped Photinia. The Photinia is a common shrub used in the landscape as a fence row. Photinia is not normally used as a single shrub. This plant can get to be 10 15 feet tall. When using this plant in the landscape it is important that the owner is aware of factors affecting the survival of this plant. One of the key diseases that a person should watch for is black spot. Black Spot is shown on the leaves as round black spots. This is a bacterial disease. Black Spot can be controlled by using a spray containing copper sulfate, which can be purchased at your local garden center. Other infections to watch for are Fire Blight and Powdery Mildew. Fire Blight is a bacterial infection that affects the blossoms of the plant. It begins with black oozing out of the stems, that then affect the blossoms at the end of the stem. Powdery Mildew is a white fungus that grows on the top of the leaves. Ways to control these infections would be to give adequate room for growth between shrubs and having favorable conditions for growth. The Pacific Northwest has the ideal conditions for these infections to occur. fluency
