Chilipepper CP8000 Installation Instructions READ BEFORE INSTALLING: * The Chilipepper is not designed to be connected with rigid piping like copper or galvanized pipes. *Flexible hoses MUST be used. * The Chilipepper fittings are designed for flexible hoses that have a rubber gasket to make a water-tight seal. * Do not use putty/pipe dope on the fittings for the Chilipepper. * Teflon tape is ok, IF USED CORRECTLY, and the Teflon tape does not get inside the pump head. WARNING: Risk of electric shock. This pump is supplied with a grounding conductor and a grounding-type attachment plug. To reduce the risk of electric shock, be certain that it is connected only to a properly grounded grounding-type receptacle. Package Contents The Chilipepper Appliance Hex Adjusting Tool Temperature Adjusting Screw Driver One push button with cable Two brass T fittings Brass fitting with Temperature Sensor 1- White Washer for Brass Fitting Items needed to Install the Chilipepper Two Braided type hoses: 3/8" Comp x 1/2" FIP 5/8" Drill Bit for the Button Wrench for the hoses 110 Volt Outlet Helpful troubleshooting tips are at the back of this booklet. 1

STEP ONE Installing the Brass Fitting and Sensor The Brass fitting with the Temperature Sensor is packaged separated to avoid damage to these parts during shipping. It will be reconnected according to the instructions below. NOTE: There may be some water in the pump due to our water tests. Insert the white washer into the brass fitting and thread it onto the tallest fitting (the outlet to the cold water line), then thread the sensor into the side of the brass fitting. We recommend using Teflon tape on this connection. Be sure to check the brass fitting for leaks after the water is turned on. Next, insert the white sensor cable end into its connection at the base of the Chilipepper. The white connector will only go in one way. Match the two raised ridges on the cable end to the connection. 2

STEP TWO Under the Sink 1. Turn off the Hot and Cold water shut-off valves under the sink that supply water to the sink fixture. (Fig 1) 2. Open the faucet to relieve any system pressure. 3. Disconnect the existing hoses from both shut-off valves. 4. Connect the brass T s to the shut-off valves. (Fig 2) ( Most homes have 3/8 in. compression fittings on the shut-off valves. If the thread size is different a brass adapter will be needed.) 5. Inspect the rubber washers in the hoses to make sure they can be reused and then connect the two existing hoses to the brass T s. (Fig 3) 6. Connect two new hoses to the Chilipepper, (Fig 4) and place the unit on the floor of the cabinet. 7. Connect the remaining ends of the hoses to the brass T s, making sure the Hot and Cold hoses are connected to the correct inlet and outlet. (Fig 4 & Fig 6) 3

STEP THREE Priming the Pump Priming and Removing all the air from the water lines and the pump head is the most important thing that can be done to insure a long life for the Chilipepper. The Chilipepper is a very high speed, powerful pump and running it for any length of time without water will either damage the shaft seal or the pump head, resulting in a water leak and will VOID THE WARRANTY. Please be extra careful and follow the Priming Instructions. PRIMING THE PUMP A. Turn ON the HOT water supply valve UNDER THE SINK FIRST. B. Then Turn the COLD water ON at the SINK FIXTURE NEXT C. At this point you should hear water running through the Chilipepper. D. This will bleed the air out of the water lines and the Chilipepper. E. Finally turn the COLD water supply valve ON under the sink. Double Check to Make Sure all the Water Valves are Fully Open F. Check All Connections and Fittings for leaks. An old plumber s trick is to place a clean newspaper under the connection after the installation. If there s a leak it will be easy to find. 4

STEP FOUR Installing the Button To install the push button, drill a 5/8 hole where you want the button located. Feed the cable through the hole and connect the two cables to the push connectors on the Chilipepper. ( Fig 8) Push the button into the hole. Additional buttons can be wired in parallel with the first button or connected individually to the Chilipepper push connectors. If you want to use a different button, any doorbell style button will work. If it is illuminated, you will need to remove the light for the button to work with the Chilipepper. Before activating the Chilipepper for the first time, turn the hot and cold water faucets ON with a low flow, then press the button for the Chilipepper. This will remove any remaining air from the lines and finish the priming of the pump. After a final inspection for leaks, the Chilipepper can be put into the plastic container. The Chilipepper and plastic container can be put into the foam box and the foam lid can be used as well, if desired. 5

Adjustment On the side of the Chilipepper there is a round opening (Fig 9). Inside the opening is a Sensitivity Adjustment. The adjustment can be done with the included screw driver or any small flat-head screw driver. Turning the sensitivity adjustment clockwise (#4 maximum) increases the distance the hot water travels and will result in hotter water at the faucet. This may cause some warm water to enter the cold water line for a few feet but the warm water will be removed when the faucet is used. Turning the Sensitivity counter-clockwise (#1 minimum) reduces the distance the hot water travels resulting in cooler hot water. The Sensitivity Adjustment is factory set to #3, which is the most common setting. CP8000 New Features and Notes 1. Built-in Moisture Detector and Alarm which will alert the user of any moisture accumulation in the Chilipepper. 2. If the Chilipepper gets wet for any reason, the alarm will sound and stop the pump from operating. 3. The pump will go into LOCK OUT at 95 degrees and not turn on again until it goes below 95 degrees. 4. If a button is pushed while in LOCK OUT, the alarm will beep 2 times. 5. If the low voltage button wires are shorted out for any reason, the alarm will beep 1 time every 20 seconds. 6. The built-in timer allows the pump to run for a maximum of 3 minutes with each activation, to avoid overheating. 7. The temperature sensor has 4 sensitivity adjustments for your convenience. Setting 1 is the lowest and 4 is the highest. 8. The Chilipepper is activated upon release of the button after pressing it. 9. It is not necessary for the faucet to be open when the Chilipepper is in use (except for the first use at installation). 6

Trouble Shooting Note: There is some leakage possible through the Chilipepper pump from hot to cold. When working on the plumbing in a home where the Chilipepper is installed it may be necessary to shut the hot or cold valve off at the fixture where the Chilipepper is installed, to isolate the hot and cold water lines during plumbing repairs. Press the start button and nothing happens. 1. Be sure there is electricity at the outlet. Sometimes the disposal outlet has only one of the two receptacles switched, and sometimes the whole outlet is switched. Try running an extension cord from another outlet and see if the Chilipepper starts. 2. Check the button wire connections at the Chilipepper. (Fig 8) If they are inserted too far, the wire insulation can interfere with the connection. 3. Check the on/off switch on the front of the unit. The dash symbol indicates on; the circle indicates off. Press the start button and hear 2 beeps but the water is not hot. Check that the sensor is firmly seated in its connection at the base of the unit. Wait ½ hour and try again. Sometimes the sensor detects latent heat from being handled. The Chilipepper runs but hot water doesn t reach the sink, or takes longer than without the Chilipepper. Make sure that both supply valves under the sink are fully open. Check that the hot and cold lines are connected correctly the taller outlet with the brass fitting is for the cold line and the shorter inlet in the center is for the hot water. Hot water is in my cold line when the Chilipepper has not been operating. There are 3 reasons for this to happen: 1. The Chilipepper is much higher than the water heater. 2. There is an exterior hose bib or sprinkler line very close to where the Chilipepper is installed. 3. The spring check valve is dirty. To correct #1 and #2, the spring check valve needs more pressure on it. Using the Hex Adjusting Tool, (Fig 10) Start with one rotation. This will put more pressure on the spring, requiring more water pressure to open the check valve. To Correct #3 the check valve needs to be cleaned. How to clean the spring loaded check valve: First, Disconnect the Temperature Sensor from the bottom of the Chilipepper. This is done by pulling on 7

the white connector and wiggling it side to side at the same time. DO NOT PULL ON THE WIRES Next, remove the brass adapter from the cold outlet (Fig 4) of the Chilipepper. Remove the threaded retainer with the Hex adjusting tool and remove the spring and rubber Check valve. Check for dirt, sand, etc. and clean, then replace the check valve, spring, threaded retainer, brass adapter and reconnect the temperature sensor.
