Welcome Dorothea Sommer opened the first meeting by welcoming all members of the Standing Committee and observers to Lyon. The members of LBE SC introduced themselves. 2. The Chair reminded the members of the Standing Committee that those who serve on a Committee are expected to contribute to the Section s work and to attend the regular meetings during the yearly WLIC conferences. Approval of the Minutes of SC Meetings held on 17 and 20 August in Singapore. The minutes were accepted as a correct record and adopted. 4. Matters Arising I) The SC members where again asked to send details and photographs for profiles to be presented on the website. The information should include job title, contact details, background and experience, favourite library buildings and (if possible) a favourite library building quotation. II) III) The POE Survey has been translated into the IFLA languages, except French. Diane Koen volunteered to translate it into French. A publication on POE is in preparation. The Chair informed about important dates during the conference: 1001 Libraries to see before you die, Sunday 17 th August, 12.15 13.30, Auditorium Pasteur. During the second meeting the Chair reported from the presentation. It was agreed that a possible future IFLA Market Session needs to be prepared in close cooperation between the Public Library Section, the Danish Agency for Culture and the Architects schmidt hammer lassen. Two IFLA Market Sessions on Sunday 17 th August: o Professional activities: What makes an IFLA Unit successful? 12.15 13.30 Gratte Ciel 1 3. LBE SC representatives will be Charles Forrest and Janine Schmidt. During the second meeting Charles Forrest and 2

Janine Schmidt gave a detailed report from the meeting. The report has also been distributed to the SC mail list. o Producing IFLA Standards a how to session for IFLA units. 12.15 13.30, Forum 2. LBE SC representatives will be Olaf Eigenbrodt and Sharon Bostick. During the second meeting Olaf Eigenbrodt and Sharon Bostick reported from the meeting. IFLA President s session, Monday 18 th August 9.30, Amphitheatre, during which the Lyon Declaration on Access to Information and Development will be presented: www.lyondeclaration.org Inger Edebro Sikström, Olaf Eigenbrodt, Stefan Clevström and Dorothea Sommer will prepare a statement concerning the impact of LBE regarding the Lyon-declaration. Further, the Chair informed that the call for nominations for new members of the Sections will go out in October to all IFLAmembers. The Secretary informed about the status of current membership in the Standing Committee and briefly informed on the timeframe for the nomination process. Members who are eligible for a second term and are willing to continue their work in the SC are encouraged to make necessary preparations for the renomination process regarding to the IFLA member (Institution, Organization or Association) who will make their nomination. http://www.ifla.org/officers-corner/sc-nomination Also, in the next year new elections for officers will take place. Both the Chair and Secretary have now served for two terms and are thus not eligible for renomination. New candidates for these positions have to be elected in Cape Town. http://www.ifla.org/officers-corner/election-procedure 5. Report from Leadership Brief The Chair relayed points of information from IFLA HQ which included the following: 3

I) The Division Chair of Division IV is Clara Chu, SC Education and Training. She informed about the coming election for Division Chair in Cape Town in 2015. Eligible are all outgoing Standing Committee Officers. II) Admin funds were reduced again. Available IFLA funds should be used for projects. III) The importance of SC attendance at the IFLA Market Sessions was stressed. 6. Report on the Midyear meeting The Secretary reported from the Midyear meeting in Chicago, 27 February 2014 2 March 2014. During the meeting the programs of the Open Session in Lyon, in collaboration with the Rare Books and Manuscripts Section, and the Satellite Conference in Paris, in collaboration with the Acquisition and Collection Development Section, were finalized. The Chair thanked Sharon Bostick for hosting the Midyear meeting and organizing library visits to: - The Paul V. Galvin Library at the Illinois Institute of Technology, - Graham Resource Center and Architecture (GRC), - Newberry Library. - American Library Association Headquarter. An article about the Midyear meeting was published in the last Newsletter. 7. Report on Paris Satellite Conference This years Satellite conference took place in Paris in co-operation with the Acquisition and Collection Development Section. It was very successful and attracted around 70 participants. Presentations shall be made available on the website. The Chair thanked Jeff Scherer for his committed work as well as all the members of the sub-committee who prepared the conference. Jerome Fronty from the Section Acquisition and Collection Development arranged guided visits and receptions in the Hotel de Ville de Paris and Bibliothèque Universitaire des Langues et Civilisations (BULAC). The treasurer informed about the status of finances. The attendance fees covered completely the costs of the conference. It is planned to collect all papers and to publish them in an IFLA Publication Series book. 4

8. Future conferences and Midyear meeting There are no plans to organize a Satellite Conference in South Africa in 2015. During the coming Midyear Meeting preparations for a Satellite Conference in the USA, 2016, will begin. A proposal for a Midyear meeting in Barcelona 2015 was made by Santi Romero. The year 2015 is important for Spain as the centenary of the country s library project - including the creation of the Librarian s school, the National Library and the first public libraries. Various commemorative events are planned, in particular a symposium that will take place 25 26 February 2015. The Standing Committee is invited to take part in the Symposium as a part of the Midyear meeting 2015 It was decided to accept this proposal and to hold the Midyear meeting 2015 in Barcelona 25-28 February 2015. The titles of meetings, length and scope were discussed by SC members. The Chair pointed out that participation of SC members remains optional but that, of course, everyone is welcome. 9. Open Session in Lyon and Cape Town The Open Session in Lyon was discussed. It was organized together with the Rare Books and Manuscripts Section and included four presentations. It took place at the first day of the Congress and was well attended with about 200 participants. During both SC meetings the planning for the Open Session in Cape Town was discussed. During the first meeting Ulrike Lang from the Continuing Professional Development and Workplace Section took part. The members of the section explored the opportunity to hold a joint Open Session of both sections in Cape Town, but could not agree about a good format. In the second meeting the LBE SC unanimously decided to organize an Open Session in Cape Town, which focuses entirely on library architecture. A subcommittee was founded for the planning of the Open Session in Cape Town. Members are Anette Franzkowiak, Diane Koen, Sharon Bostick, Charles Forrest, Dorothea Sommer, Stefan Clevström and Olaf Eigenbrodt. 5

10. Newsletter, Website and Blog The Chair thanked Information Coordinator Jeff Scherer for the work with the Website, Blog and Newsletter. Two Editions of the Newsletter were produced in 2014. The topics of the next two newsletters were discussed. Next topics for the newsletters shall include: - a report from the Satellite in Paris (Dorothea Sommer), - Library impressions from Paris and Lyon (Charles Forrest, Jeff Scherer) - CTLES project (Bernadette Patte) - library projects in Norway (Björn Skevik) - the new Latvian National Library (Janine Schmidt). The first issue of the Newsletter is due in fall. Contributions have to be submitted until October 31 to Jeff Scherer. Jeff Scherer was asked to put the presentations of the Satellite Conference on the Website. 11. Action Plan for LBE SC and Annual Report The Action Plan is still valid and needs to be updated in Cape Town in 2015. An Annual Report will be written by the Secretary. 12. IFLA Journal It is no longer necessary to choose an article for inclusion in the IFLA Journal. All papers which were presented during the Open Session Lyon will be published in the IFLA Library. 13. Any other business During the first meeting Luisa Marqardt invited to the next annual international meeting of the CNBA (Italian National Coordination of Architectural Libraries). It will take place in Rome, UniRoma 3, faculty of architects on the 2 nd or 3 rd, May 2015. The topic will be sustainability.
