WHERE WILL YOU PARK THE ROCKET 3000? YOUR CHALLENGE DESIGN A DREAM HOME FOR AN INTELLIGENT, OPEN-MINDED 28 YEAR OLD COUPLE WHO ARE ABOUT TO START A FAMILY. The Jetsons believe that despite Australia s housing affordability problems, they can build a dream home on a small lot. They want to build a home that s the envy of their friends in order to encourage them to sell their inner city apartments and move into the suburbs with them. The finalists will be showcased at the National Building Design Conference and winners announced at the NABD National Design Awards on the 1st October 2016. The winner will be crowned Dream Designer Of The Year at the event and receive a trip for two to Japan. 1. MEET THE JETSONS Jessica and Jared Jetson are 28 year old city-dwellers. They have established their careers and are now looking to start a family. After years of saving up a deposit and dreaming about their own home they ve purchased a small block in a new land release for $275,000. They abandoned the idea of a project home when Jessica s uncle James, a wealthy, eccentric designer, offered to pay half of the build cost if they built a unique, fresh and futuristic design. Jared likes working on rocket bikes and Jessica is a mountain bike competitor.
2. 7. THE LAND Land size 394m 2 12.5 x 31.5 3. THE BUILD New custom built home in a new land release A 200 250m 2 size house with a double storey layout to maximise outdoor living space. 4. THE INTERIOR 4 bedrooms (3 bedrooms and a home office) 2.5 bathrooms (A main bathroom with a bath for the kids) 1 car garage with room for a small workshop for working on rocket bikes and mountain bikes. 1 off street driveway parking for a second car Open plan kitchen and outdoor living areas. They re digital experts and the house needs to suit their current and future needs. 5. THE EXTERIOR The house needs to be high impact (in order to get uncle James s funding help). It should be beautiful and eye-catching with a strong Australian character and street appeal. 6. ARCHITECTURAL STYLE The style should be modern, and also attempt to pick future trends. The Jetsons are open-minded and are looking for fresh designs that haven t been seen before. CONSTRUCTION MATERIALS Use 2 kinds of Scyon Wall cladding or weatherboards (Axon, Stria, Linea or Matrix) and 1 James Hardie cladding such as rendered HardieTex (Blueboard) or Easylap. The deck should be made from HardieDeck. 8. GLAZING Choice should suit design and energy efficiency. 9. INSULATION Maximum insulation for energy efficiency. 10. SUSTAINABILITY A minimum energy rating of 6 (estimated). No supporting documentation required. 11. THE BUILDING SITE A level site, aerial image right. 12. TIMEFRAMES Entry close Friday 12 th August 2016. 13. BUDGET Up to $600,000 depending on whether Uncle James likes the design.

JUDGING CRITERIA Entries will be judged on the quality of the overall project in either of two categories: 1. Warm Climate OR 2. Cold Climate Assessment will be based on, but not limited to the following elements: Design innovation & flair. Visual appeal, street appeal and the use of Scyon Walls cladding. (Visit scyon.com.au for design ideas). Innovation and original design solutions. Design effectiveness in considering future housing needs. The relationship between internal and external spaces and the use of HardieDeck. (Visit hardiedeck.com.au for inspiration). Livability and clever use of space. Australian character in the design. Environmental sustainability and passive design and energy efficiency. ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS 1. This competition is open to all current financial members of NABD States. 2.
