INTRODUCTION INTRODUCTION RAISING THE BAR asecos safety storage for Australian labs offers a whole new level of productivity and safety - these 4 changes will align your lab with the smartest and safest labs in the world: #1 Guaranteed fire resistance #2 Bunded drawers #3 Flexible cabinet locations #4 Distance to ignition sources CHANGE #1(the big one) Guaranteed fire resistance according to EN 14470-1 Why is fire resistance important for safety storage cabinets? Quite simply, there is no point storing dangerous goods in custom designed storage cabinets unless such cabinets offer a specific level of protection; when dealing with flammable liquids, very small quantities can create a very large explosion causing injury or death. All safety cabinet regulations are designed to protect users from such incidents, but only some regulations ensure a guaranteed safe time in which there is no risk of explosion. Unfortunately the Australian Standard AS1940 is not one of these regulations, and does not require insulated construction of cabinets OR independant testing for fire resistance, both of which are required by EN 14470-1 NO GUARANTEE AS1940 EN 14470-1 We dont have a high risk environment, we only use tiny quanitities of flammable liquid. Wrong. It is the vapour from the evaporating solvents which is most dangerous - vapour can cause an explosion 400 times the volume of the liquid. CHOOSE WISELY! Myth breaker #1 Myth breaker #2 Myth breaker #3 All Australian Standard compliant cabinets are fire rated Wrong. There is no requirement in AS1940 for safety cabinets to be fire rated to a specified level, they are required to be built with 2 sheetmetal skins with a 40 mm cavity (Air) between. In the EN 14470-1 furnace test, such cabinets last 3-10 minutes before exceeding dangerous temperatues internally. PERFORMANCE GUARANTEE We can all escape the building in a few minutes if there is a fire. Maybe... In the research and production sector buildings are becoming larger, often with labs on many levels. Disabled users also need to be considered, as does the almost certain spread of fire to other areas of the building once dangerous solvents are ignited. CHANGE #2 Bunded drawers Drawers in safety storage cabinets? Why didn t someone think of that before? Indeed a great idea but it had to be done correctly, bearing in mind the chief purpose of a safety cabinet is... well... safety. The engineering of the asecos Solvent Cabinets ensures that the drawers are designed to retract in the case of a fire (even if a user leaves them extended), after retraction the cabinet door will close and seal to protect the contents and the lab users. For the Acids and Alkalis Cabinets the drawers are polypropylene (no more rust) and removable for cleaning. With the engineering sorted out, the most important feature is ergonomics - which is a big reason these cabinets are already well loved in the Australian lab market. Here are all the reasons: Every drawer extends fully when fully loaded Rated to carry the weight of a full shelf of winchesters Increase storage by 100% compared to shelves Find the container at the back, easily and safely. ELIMINATION TIME: Say goodbye to everyday laboratory hazards HAZARD ELIMINATED HAZARD #1 I can t get to the container at the back of the shelf without removing half of the cabinet contents to get to it (and spilling the container at the front to do so). Mostly when I get to the container at the back it is not the one I want... CHANGE #3 Flexible cabinet locations In 21st century laboratories flexible layouts are of the utmost importance. The operational purposes of a laboratory can change quite frequently and with it the location of the chemical storage systems. A central fire resistant storage room may now be a thing of the past, thanks to the 90 minute guaranteed safety of asecos solvent cabinets. Given that each 90 minute rated cabinet is a fire proof store in its own right, these can be stored very differently to the commonly used AS1940 cabinets - therefore solving many common lab design issues, consult your dangerous goods consultant for more information. SAY GOODBYE TO: Taking a 10 minute walk to get your daily supply of lab chemicals Locking out the elevator, when moving solvents from the central store to the lab Safety cabinets spread several metres apart throughout valuable lab space. Leaving dangerous chemicals in the fume cupboard and on the lab bench (as the store is just too far away) asecos cabinets with drawers in use at the Charles perkins Centre USYD HAZARD ELIMINATED HAZARD #2 Whoops a spill, AND its on the top shelf, AND the sump is at the very base of the cabinet. Nothing to do but wait for it to drip through all the shelves and collect in the base... a 2 hour cleanup operation coming up. CHANGE #4 Distance to ignition sources (Exclusion Zones) Various regulations regulate the allowable minimum distance between solvent cabinets and ignition sources, which in AS1940 is stated as 3 metres. Several Australian DG experts now view this as unnecessary when 90 minute fire rated cabinets are installed and continually ventilated at a specified rate. To reduce or eliminate exclusion zones, a safety cabinet should offer these features: The cabinet should be mechanically ventilated at minimum 10 times per hour (EN 14470-1) to reduce explosive vapours The cabinet should have a certified fire rating Doorseals should be tight and spark proof For a custom solution to your exclusion zone question, consult your dangerous goods or hazardous zones consultant. SMART, SAFE, SIMPLE! 2 3

in AUSTRALIA Case studies - real clients embracing real safety in AUSTRALIA Case studies - real clients embracing real safety CHARLES PERKINS CENTRE University of Sydney NSW SAHMRI Adelaide SA No ordinary building no ordinary DG solution Brookfield Multiplex recently delivered the world-class $220 million Charles Perkins Centre, a major University of Sydney initiative with 46,700 square metres of research and education space, just in time for the 2014 academic year. This flagship building is located at Missenden Road in Camperdown, adjacent to the Royal Prince Alfred Hospital precinct, where it will provide a world-class hub of research into the cause and treatment of obesity, diabetes and cardiovascular diseases. The various cabinets installed here are designed to store flammable, corrosive, toxic and miscellaneous dangerous goods, and are labelled according to all relevant Australian Standards. The contract included a full installation service in a tight time frame all handled smoothly by our fitters ahead of schedule. When procuring the safety cabinets for this project the stakeholders selected the asecos range for a higher level of safety, the better ergonomics and user experience that comes from the integrated drawers, and not least - the unrivalled German made quality. $220 million facility 46,700 m 2 9 researchers 1445 Undergraduates asecos cabinets In 2008 the South Australian Government established SAHMRI, (South Australian Health and Medical Research Institute) and the Federal Government allocated $200 million to build a new research facility for the 600 strong team of SAHMRI researchers. Creating a 25,000 m 2 world-class precinct of medical research and clinical application was a mission with no shortcuts. In line with this theme consultants selected the asecos safety cabinets for installation under the Fume cupboards, for a totally integrated cabinet package that exceeded safety standards All the asecos underbench cabinets are seamlessly integrated into the surrounding joinery, a real eye-pleaser and a first in the market - also true of the facility itself. A fitting outcome for an outstanding building! Hear it straight from our happy CPC clients: Ian, Lab Services Manager: These are definitely a superior cabinet by design, and the drawers are a real advantage to users Denise, Safety and Technical Officer, Xlab CPC: We love these cabinets and particularly the drawers as they are fully bunded and make for easy access to all containers. The trouble with conventional shelves is getting to the containers at the back the drawers are also quite strong; I was actually a bit nervous the first time I loaded the drawer with large (full) containers but it is very firm. What we really like about the Acids and Alkalis cabinet is the divided storage for segregation of various chemicals also the removable trays at each level. SCHOOL OF CHEMICAL ENGINEERING UNSW Randwick NSW The Laboratory System manager at the School of Chemical Engineering recently upgraded to asecos type 90 storage in the flammable goods store a purpose built room which historically housed cabinets with no guaranteed fire rating (although compliant to relevant local standards) As the type 90 asecos cabinets are guaranteed safe for 90 minutes in a fire, it is now possible to eliminate such costly purpose built rooms in future buildings as the cabinet in itself is a fire rated unit. This is of particular interest to clients with large lab spaces as it offers flexible solutions; cabinets can be located in diverse areas rather than a central store and this makes for safer and more efficient handling of liquids. Another attractive feature for this client is the asecos filtered exhaust unit, which eliminates the need for ducting to atmosphere while safely filtering solvent fumes through active carbon for release into the room. No more pipes and penetrations through multiple levels to exhaust the solvent fumes! In addition to selecting asecos type 90 this client has the all new Q-LINE type 90 cabinet with drawers and auto doors a good choice. 14 15
