INTERIOR DESIGN

INTERIOR DESIGN Today s built environment presents subtle and complex challenges to design professionals. Designers can no longer view projects in terms of single dimensional outcomes. Design is an evolutionary process that strives to create beyond our best imaginings and we at GHD aim to create such built environments. Design shapes what we desire and how we live. It drives the demands for resources and energy. As designers we have an obligation to respond to these requirements and redirect our thinking and practices to produce buildings that are friendly to people and to our environment.

THE HORIZON ALLIANCE BRISBANE GHD was engaged to create an office space for "The Horizon Alliance" comprising of Queensland Rail (QR), Kellog Brown & Root Pty Ltd, John Holland Pty Ltd, GHD and the Department of Main Roads, the Horizon Alliance is currently collaborating on a south east Queensland transport corridor project. With the tenancy not located in the CBD and not close to facilities, the space had to offer multiple benefits to attract and retain high calibre and talented personnel. The fitout accommodates 130 staff in an open plan over two levels within a floor space of 3000m2. This includes several quiet rooms, meeting rooms, boardroom, casual breakout spaces, cafe areas, staff lounge/ lunch area, courtyard and a training room. To take advantage of the high ceilings, the slab was blacked out and building services exposed, introducing a raw and industrial feel. Meeting spaces were themed to reinforce the Alliance's core business and project objectives. In conjunction with the fitout, the Base Building was completely refurbished with GHD working closely with the Building Contractor to address a myriad of complex site issues. Due to the fast track nature of the project, the construction was approached as variation to a "Design and Construct" method, with GHD filtering drawings to the contractor on a daily basis. The fitout has provided the Alliance with a vibrant, open and very 'livable' space.

GHD, 180 LONSDALE STREET MELBOURNE The creation of a new working environment is a rare opportunity to produce innovative design that embraces emerging future directions. GHD was faced with this challenge when they relocated to take up 6,000sqm of office space at 180 Lonsdale Street, Melbourne. During the design process, emphasis was placed on the importance of implementing the sustainable design principles GHD recommends to its clients, from the selection of finishes to design for improved energy management. A modular approach was taken to the design of workstations and offices allowing for greater flexibility and re-configuration in the future.

TRANSGRID SYDNEY TransGrid engaged GHD to convert and reuse an existing warehouse and carpark building to create an office space featuring modern convenience and industrial character. As Australia s largest transmission company, TransGrid has proven that adaptive reuse of existing facilities is not only possible, but extremely desirable. GHD s interior design concepts and colours provided a fresh and welcoming feel, using lighting, colour and pattern to create a more domestic atmosphere. The design provides a variety of different spaces for its occupants, and offers a more relaxed environment for some of these areas including the reception, waiting area and breakout rooms. Lighting played a particularly important role in defining and differentiating areas and functions.

VICTORIA POINT LIBRARY QUEENSLAND The new Victoria Point Library in Moreton Bay, Queensland is a significant local gathering point and community facility. The collaborative process between the Redland Shire Council Library Team and the designers challenged the community's perceptions of the traditional library image. The library provides the focal point for a rapidly growing region, forming a meeting place for people of all ages. As such, the fitout was designed to be as flexible as possible and provides clean canvas space that is adaptable for exhibitions, themed events and book promotions, while enhancing public services provided by the Library. The community focus is depicted through the use of graphics, creating a strong link to the local environs. The local creek and bay islands are replicated in the flooring in simplistic forms and the dynamic waterway band island discs provides direction to the various library sections. Other local imagery, including wildlife, flora and iconic historic landmarks are also represented in glazing film artwork panels. The introduction of interactive elements such as seating booths with music listening posts, café, magnetic blackboard walls and acrylic convex mirrors, all play a part in engaging the community. GHD interior designers scope included developing the project brief, space planning, contract documentation and contract administration, including coordinating with the base-building contractors during construction to ensure building services were installed as project-specific.

AUSTRALIA AID CANBERRA GHD designed the 9,800m2 fitout for AusAID s new purpose-built headquarters, located at 255 London Circuit, Civic, Canberra. The fitout has been designed to visually and functionally reflect AusAID s mission. It embraces technology and flexibility, while evoking a sense of approachability and openness balanced with the agency s need for security. It also captures the agency s sense of history and its association with a broad range of cultures. A neutral colour palette with hi-tech finishes was adopted and a limited number of background colours were used to differentiate building levels and introduce a change of perspective in the break-out areas. Extensive exhibition areas accommodate an impressive portfolio of artworks and gifts obtained from different client countries.

WESTPAC BRANCHES WA As one of Westpac's nominated architects, GHD has provided interior design and project management services for a number of Westpac Branch fitouts in Western Australia. GHD has provided consultancy services for a number of branch fitouts based upon Westpac's fitout guidelines and branding materials. The fitouts generally consist of front of house customer services zones housing tellers, interview rooms, ATMS and public areas, and back of house areas work and support areas for staff. GHD have also been involved in auditing and upgrading over 50 branches to provide disabled access upgrades.

GHD, MARY STREET FITOUT BRISBANE The 1,069m2 fitout, located in the heart of the business precinct of the Brisbane CBD, was designed to accommodate 113 staff over two levels, in a mostly open plan environment. Attention was given to GHD s core purpose of clients, especially in the design of the reception/entry space and main meeting rooms that enhance and capture the river views. With this in mind, our brief was to design an office space that would inspire creative design, attract and retain high calibre and talented personnel while still upholding the corporate image of GHD. The planning also allows for a number of hot desks for casual and future staff accommodation. The space offers a range of flexible meeting rooms and team hubs linked to a communal café area to promote interaction between all professional disciplines. The documentation was undertaken in an accelerated 2 week timeframe and a high level of detail was reached within this period. The design team took advantage of the need for a creative environment through the use of colour, 3D relief and graphic design elements.

DEPARTMENT OF IMMIGRATION & CITZENSHIP SYDNEY GHD has provided interior design, project management and building services for the Department of Immigration and Citizenship's at 300 Elizabeth Street in Sydney, Australia. The Department sought to move away from standard government office accommodation to a completely open plan office environment featuring the use of hot-desking and addressing issues of cultural change in the workplace. The resulting design accommodated over 300 people spanning three levels. Flexible meeting rooms, breakout spaces as well as conference and training facilities were provided to allow for multi-functional spaces that would cater to quiet working environments, relaxed café-style atmosphere and secure spaces. GHD delivered total project services from briefing through to contract administration. The successful delivery of this project ensured GHD was engaged for the fitout of a further two floors with in the building.

ADMINISTRATIVE APPEALS TRIBUNAL OFFICES PERTH GHD undertook interior design and documentation for the office fitout of 1,600sqm over 2 floors for the Administrative Appeals Tribunal in Perth. The office was designed to provide a professional and cost effective environment in keeping with the organisation's corporate image. Level 4 accommodates the main public spaces including waiting areas, conference and interview rooms, and recording rooms linked by perimeter circulation. An internal stair provides a link between this public space and the open and enclosed office accommodation on Level 5.

WORKPLACE OMBUDSMAN MELBOURNE GHD is currently engaged by the Workplace Ombudsman to manage and deliver a 2,000 sqm fitout. GHD is providing architecture, interior design and building engineering Services and relocation management. The project involves close consultation with the stakeholders to ensure all their needs are met, adhering to the Department of Employment & Workplace Relations' office accommodation guidelines. The new fitout aims to create a design solution that enhances staff morale and social interaction. The promotion of environmentally sustainable materials and finishes is also a feature of the new fitout. GHD is managing the project to ensure that it is delivered on time and on budget.

UNIVERSITY OF TECHNOLOGY SYDNEY GHD has provided interior design and architectural services to the University of Technology Sydney for a wide range of refurbishment and fitout projects including offices, laboratories and workshops. The University's design criteria generally places importance on using colour to create a sense of fun and excitement, reducing the enclosure of traditional University buildings through opening up walls or use of glazing, and providing cost effective design solutions. Pictured projects include the student kiosk lab, which was formerly an enclosed classroom. This lab now opens onto the atrium to allow for interaction with the adjacent student lounge area and IT support desk.

BOOST JUICE ROLLOUT ADELAIDE The design team was engaged to develop the corporate image of Boost Juice and expand the initial Adelaide store to a national franchise. The visionary design created a space that was playful, highly energetic, combined with the utilitarian need for function. Strategic use of colour, graphics, and text encapsulated the freshness of the Boost Juice brand. Our involvement included the design, documentation, coordination of consultants and project administration for approximately 75 stores. Boost Juice was impressed with the original designs and did not hesitate to further engage the design team to undertake the development of the franchise, as well as their national manual.

TEAZ ADELAIDE The design team was engaged to complete a new concept store with the intent to expand into a national franchise. The innovative, seamless, design featured a recycling strategy that rewarded the patron for the return of used Teaz accessories. This environmental component sets Teaz apart from other food franchises. After the initial marketing analysis conducted with the client, this project involved design, documentation and coordination of design consultants, as well as documentation of the store. The design team successfully collaborated with Nick Nack Graphic Design and the client to complete the flagship store and will continue to expand the Teaz franchise with stores opening interstate.

XO SUPPER CLUB ADELAIDE Located in the heart of the restaurant sector of Hutt Street, the XO Supper Club sought to develop a club atmosphere that was the embodiment of the Fashion Capitals of Europe and position it for Adelaide. The inspiration for the design was the subtle use of distinctive finishes including the use of the signature XO and the creation of a luxurious yet understated open plan environment. This allowed for the clever manipulation of space into zones of relaxation, which were used to anchor the scheme. Our design involvement included the design and documentation of approximately 100m2 floor area. The final design was completed successfully on time and budget. Its success has been acknowledged through patron response, media interest and design awards.

McDONALD'S ADELAIDE The design team was engaged by McDonald s Australia to undertake the design of their Adelaide flagship store at Noarlunga. Our involvement included the design and documentation of approx. 375m2 floor area with a total design budget of $1.2 million. The final design solution required consideration of the future expansion needs of McDonald s. McDonald s was impressed with the work undertaken for the initial design and have since engaged the design team as one of four design firms in Australia to complete a national concept that is now being used throughout their brand portfolio.

FUMO BLU ADELAIDE The image formed by the name Fumo Blu, meaning blue smoke, and the cigar/wine bar concept, inspired the design team to formulate a retro, lounge style atmosphere, oozing funk. The underground space was emphasised by the use of dark rich colours, understated illuminance and a discreet, yet enticing, entry. The space was dissected into three areas allowing individual patrons to choose their desired grouping. Translucent blue moulded café style seating encourages a more casual, transient set, whereas the upholstered booth seating adjacent the bar is for those patrons that are settling in for the evening. Towards the back, tucked away behind a tropical fish aquarium, is a discreet area, ideal for those one-on-one moments. The industrial shell, that could have been seen as a limitation, inspired the design team to utilise existing elements in contrast with the new plush finishes. Ruby red velvet upholstery, paint finishes, dark timber joinery elements and the retro steel lattice with the clean lines of reflective glass panelling. The cohesion of the elements was achieved with the use of wall lighting and the overwhelming haze of blue.
