We have a friend who lives just down the road from here and whenever we d visit we would always comment on just how beautiful the location was, says Karin. So although we had no desire to build a house from scratch when we decided to move just over five years ago, when this plot of land came up for sale it was just too perfect to pass by. The views are quite simply breathtaking, and completely uninterrupted for as far as the eye can see. The location and that view are definitely the USP of Underwood. We wanted to build an environmentally friendly house that would sit well within these glorious surroundings, and that is indeed what we have achieved, but crucially it is also a fabulous family home with a warm, welcoming and friendly feel. We also liked the sustainability of wood, so the house has been constructed using a timber frame, which is reflected throughout the interior although it s definitely not over beamed and the exterior is covered by a beautiful skin of wood cladding. Externally it s hugely characterful, but within the fabric of the building we ve been able to incorporate a wealth of modern technology and the layout has an easy flow that is ideal for modern family living. I love everything about it. The open-plan kitchen, dining and living space and the main sitting room are both south facing and both have sets of French doors that open straight out onto the garden, so there s a lovely connection between inside and out, continues Karin. We have raised beds on the east side and a large expanse of lawn that stretches down to a post-and-rail fence that allows us to enjoy an uninterrupted view. It s a beautiful place to just sit out and listen to the skylarks or the fields of wheat sighing in the wind; an absolute rural idyll. The kitchen is the beating heart of this house, says Karin. We use it for cooking, dining, relaxing and entertaining. It s a lovely big, bright space and everyone seems to naturally gravitate to it. This is a very easy place to live, says Karin. We enjoy all the benefits and beauty of rural living and yet in no time at all I can be in the centre of Newbury, Basingstoke or Reading, or I can hop onto a train into London. It s ideal. We also have a self-contained annex which is joined to the main house by a very attractive glass link, says Karin. Our son has lived in it for a spell, but the possibilities for its use are endless. We d love to buy a property abroad, and we feel that now is the right time to do it, but we ll be very sad to leave this house as it s been a very special place to live, says Karin. In my mind it deserves a family to fill it and enjoy it, but I m sure whoever owns it next will love living here every bit as much as we have.

Outside you will find glorious south facing gardens with fabulous uninterrupted views over surrounding countryside, ample driveway parking for several vehicles and a timber framed barn style garage. Both the main house and the annex have underfloor heating and double glazing throughout. Directions: From Newbury follow the A339 dual carriageway southbound to the Newtown roundabout and turn left in the direction of Basingstoke remaining on the A339. On entering the village of Headley proceed up the hill and turn left into Ashford Hill Road. Follow this road out of Headley as it winds down the hill round the bend and up the other side whereupon along this straight section of the road a cluster of properties can be seen on the right hand side. Turn right into the lane where Underwood can be found on the left hand side.
