In Memory of Bill Henslin Monthly Meeting: Elesner Library (FREE PARKING) Meeting starts @ 7pm Program: BUGS: the good, the bad and the ugly. Presented by LeRoy Brady WWW.ROSES4AZ-MEVRS March, 2013 1

Bill Henslin's passing. Our fellow Rosarian, Bill Henslin, passed away the evening of June 14th. Our thoughts and prayers are with Phyllis, his family and friends. Bill has been an active supporter and doer, efficiently getting things done in the Mesa -East Valley Rose Society, The Rose Garden at Mesa Community College and other Rose Societies here and in the District. Knowing Bill brings to mind the words of the old hymn, written in 1897, by Johnson Oatman, "Count Your Blessings, name them one by one". Bill was a blessing to each and everyone of us as we remember "one by one" the many things he did and the way he touched all of us with his love of Roses and actions supporting The Rose Garden. It was Bills wish, and his family, that in lieu of flowers, contributions be made in support of The Rose Garden at Mesa Community College. The Henslin Family wish to celebrate Bill's life later on this fall, at a time when the Rose Garden is in full beauty with thousands of blooming roses. The roses he loved to photograph. - Article provided by Marylou Coffman No wonder no work got done. Those two spent all their time talking. Phyllis Bill s last time serving on the MEVRS Board March, 2013 2

With our gratitude to all of you To know you is to know people who are kind, considerate, and thoughtful. To know you is to be grateful for the special things you have done during Bill s health issues. We thank you for the many phone calls, emails, cards and memorials in memory of Bill. For being the special people you are. Your thoughtfulness will always be remembered. Phyllis Henslin and family Bill kept everyone s garden tools sharp. Putting new plexi glass and locks in the Rose Garden Kiosks was Bill's last major improvements Bill making signs for the Rose Garden. The weeder Bill made for use in the Rose Garden March, 2013 3

Here is my best photo of Bill. Taken in November 2008 before he really got ill. Bill didn't like to have his picture taken, so I was quite pleased to get him to look at me and smile! Bob OBrien "Soon after moving to Phoenix in 2008, I found my way to the Rose Garden at MCC. Bill was working in the garden that day and was quick to shake my hand and introduce me to "the boss," as he affectionately called his wife, Phyllis. In no time, my wife and I were members of MEVRS. I always enjoyed talking to Bill - even when he would ask me if I knew which end of a shovel to use! I feel fortunate to have known Bill and to have enjoyed a lot of laughs with him. I'll never forget the kindness he showed my family and me. You will be missed, my friend." Steve Pawlowski March, 2013 4

Help raise money for MEVRS. Rose de Forrest, an active member of MEVRS from 2000 to 2005, passed away in July 2012. Her grand-daughter has donated 3 Crewel Embroidery pictures to MEVRS. These are exquisite pieces created with a lot of passion for flowers. They are about 24 x 15 inches in wooden frames. Pictures attached. Would you like one or all of them? Are you a garage sales person? Would you take them and put them on your next garage sale? Please contact Steve Sheard 480 831 2609. March, 2013 5

ROSE CARE CORNER for August, 2013 by Phyllis Henslin, Consulting Rosarian August Rose Care I am sure many of you are disappointed with the way your roses look after our extreme heat in June and July. By making sure they are getting sufficient water, giving them an organic fertilizer at (half rate) every 6 weeks and using your water wand every day if possible, they will bounce back when the temps start to moderate and reward you with beautiful blooms in the fall. This is a good time to walk through your garden and take notes. Take note of which plants are doing well and which are struggling as you may want to replace them with plants that perform better in the heat. Visit the Rose Garden at MCC where there are 9000 roses growing. The Rose Garden is a valuable resource when looking for roses that survive well in our desert heat. With camera in hand, I walked through the Rose Garden often in June and July to view the roses. I am sharing pictures of some that were doing exceptionally well.
