LOW-RESIDENCY CERTIFICATE IN CREATIVE PLACEMAKING September 2018-June 2019

BE THE CHANGE Educate, engage and empower your community through arts and culture Creative placemaking is an exciting new way of engaging arts and culture to improve our communities. This program is a comprehensive and challenging opportunity for those interested in effecting change using creative activities to foster more livable, economically viable, sustainable and equitable communities. Leonardo Vazquez, Director of NHIA Certificate in Creative Placemaking

MAKE EFFECTIVE, TANGIBLE, AND CREATIVE CHANGE IN YOUR COMMUNITY NHIA s Certificate in Creative Placemaking is where theory meets practice. Designed to build a shared knowledge base and ethical framework for creative placemaking, this is an invaluable experience for those working in civic art, urban planning, public policy, community development, and leadership development. This program prepares you to create the necessary network within a community to generate change You will work with top practitioners in the field of creative placemaking and obtain the knowledge and tools to make a positive difference. Through hands-on workshops in the opening residency, a choreographed series of Deep Learning courses and Leadership Coaching sessions, as well as a culminating Capstone Project, you will become a creative placemaker. You will be able to effectively address social, economic and cultural issues using existing resources to enhance what makes a place special. THE CERTIFICATE IN CREATIVE PLACEMAKING HAS FOUR MAIN COMPONENTS RESIDENCIES The opening residency runs August 21 23 at NHIA s Manchester Campus and serves as a solid introduction to creative placemaking while preparing you for the rest of the program. You will learn about the field of creative placemaking by exploring it in practice in the city of Manchester. You ll utilize skills for analyzing communities, gain insights from leading practitioners, and build collaborative leadership skills. The closing residency is an opportunity for you to present your capstone project to other creative placemakers, and get advice from the Certificate Program Director on how to get your recommendations implemented. DEEP LEARNING COURSES You ll take six online Deep Learning courses from September May. Through readings, thoughtful discussions, and occasional assignments curated by an accomplished faculty, you will gain a deep understanding of key issues in creative placemaking and become prepared to address the challenges you ll face. Key topics covered include: community development, local economic development, critical analysis, site planning, and destination marketing and development. LEADERSHIP COACHING Generating ideas is easy. Realizing those ideas is challenging. These Leadership Coaching sessions build on the Deep Learning courses and provide the tools you ll need to turn ideas into reality, especially when the process depends on others. Through five online sessions, you ll learn the key skills that are integral to building productive partnerships and influence. CAPSTONE PROJECT Your Capstone Project is the culmination of everything you ve learned during this program. You ll develop and present a tangible, real-time plan that can be used to make meaningful change in a community. There are several ways you can approach your Capstone Project. Develop a plan from a personal perspective, including a mock plan or detailed proposal for a creative placemaking plan in a specific community Provide analysis of an existing creative placemaking effort in a community, evaluating existing efforts and proposing recommendations for improvements Produce a paper of publishable quality (PPQ) with an emphasis on a particular issue explored in during this program. There will be an opportunity to present your Capstone Project at one of several Creative Placemaking Leadership Summits and/or Creative Placemaking Knowledge Exchanges in 2018.
