In addition to our banquet, we will also be installing the new officers for 2018. We will have lots of door prizes, so make sure you come and bring a friend or two. Lastly, I want to thank everyone who served as an officer, gave a program, provided hospitality or hosted an event at their home. I am appreciative for all you have done. I hope that everyone has a Happy Thanksgiving and a joyful holiday season! DISCLAIMER: The Editors believe the information contained in this newsletter is accurate and up to date. Annual Banquet The annual Huntington Rose Society banquet will begin at 6:30 PM, November 7, 2017 in the Fellowship Hall, Central Christian Church, 1202 Fifth Ave, Huntington, WV. The banquet will be potluck. The Society will provide turkey, cups, plates, silverware, soft drinks and coffee. This is a great time to bring your favorite recipe to share with your fellow rose growers. Following the dinner, President Monica Valentovic will open the floor for additional nominations for officers, followed by the election of officers for 2018. We hope you can plan to attend the banquet. It is the last time we meet as a group in 2017. We can 1

guarantee lots of good food, some excellent door prizes and the fellowship of great people that are interested in having a good time. One of the door prizes will be the centerpiece donated by Spurlock Flowers. Hope you can make it! HRS SLATE OF OFFICERS FOR 2018 The slate of officers is listed below. We will elect and install the officers at our November Banquet. President Gary Rankin 304-697-0321 Vice President Archie Snedegar 304-755-9486 Secretary Linda Snedegar 304-755-9486 Treasurer Monica Valentovic 304-697-0321 Assist. Treasurer Beverly Delidow 304-429-4211 Where to Buy Miniature and Miniflora Roses? Gary O. Rankin and Monica A. Valentovic Last month, Monica shared some locations to buy Large roses. This month we are going to focus on sources for Miniature and Miniflora roses. For Love of Roses Perhaps the one business that has the greatest variety of miniature and miniflora roses for sale on their own roots is For Love of Roses owned and operated by Richard Anthony and his business partner Brenna Bosch. Formerly known as Wells Mid-South Roses, the business was purchased by Richard Anthony in 2012, and the business now offers roses hybridized by a wide variety of hybridizers. A look through their website will reveal a large number of miniature and miniflora roses, novelty and singles as well as new introductions. Truly one-stop shopping! To view the roses offered for sell and to order on-line, you can go to forloveofroses.com. You can order by phone by calling 1-330-360-8510 or 1-609-284-2604. You can also email Richard at rja4cpa@aol.com. Palatine roses is an excellent company in Canada. A small number of miniature roses are available budded on multiflora which allows for better growth in our area for many varieties. Roses are already two years old when you get them and just need to be planted. Palatine sells out quickly but they will ship to your house in November 2017 or March-April 2018. Quite often we order our roses to arrive in the Fall and we plant them in the ground and cover them well with mulch. Planting in the Fall allows the roots to become more established and they take off growing the next spring. However, the risk is that you must winter protect or your new rose bush will struggle next spring. The Palatine Website is www.palatineroses.com. We have never had any problems 2

ordering from this company. The roses arrive healthy with nice green canes. Wisconsin Roses You can also get miniature or minflora roses from Steve Singer at Wisconsin Roses. These roses are sent in the spring as budded mini/miniflora roses on multiflora rootstock. However, unlike the roses from Palatine, these roses come as bare-root maiden roses, and the multiflora rose above the budded eye must be cut off as soon as the multifora canes start to leaf-out. The bud eye will then start to produce a new cane of the desired variety, and by the end of summer the roses should be well underway. Each shipment comes with directions on how to properly handle and grow bareroot maiden rose bushes. The website for Wisconsin Roses is www.wiroses.com and also has directions on how to properly handle these roses. Several varieties are still available for purchase such as Chessie s Favorite, Cooper, Dr. John Dickman, Olivia Rose and Swing Time. K & M Roses A newer rose source is K and M nursery and their website is www.kandmroses.com. K and M is located in Buckatunna, MS as Monica mentioned last month. In addition to a large collection of hybrid teas and other large roses, they also offer a long list of miniature and miniflora roses. Most varieties are on fortuniana rootstock, but they also have some varieties on their own roots. Some roses to consider are Bee s Knees, Fairhope, Joy, Magic Show, Bold Ruler, Foolish Pleasure and Power House. Miniatures Bee s Knees Magic Show Olivia Rose 3

Miniature Rose Joy sold as budded maiden by Wisconsin Roses or own root from For Love of Roses. One of the top miniature roses! Miniflora Roses Gift of Love 2018 ROSE SOCIETY DUES It is time to renew your membership for 2018. Membership dues remain at $8 for individual and $12 for a family membership. The renewal form is included in this newsletter. Send your dues to: Gary Rankin, Treasurer, 109 Cedar Court, Lavalette, WV 25535. The Society is also seeking additional donors to help defray the yearly costs incurred by the Society. The levels of donation are denoted as: Queen, King, Princess and Prince levels. Donations at the Prince ($1-25); Princess ($26-50), King ($51-99) and Queen ($100 or more) levels will be acknowledged in our newsletter. Remember that our rose society is a 501 C-3 non-profit organization and any donations are tax deductible. Bold Ruler Crystal Palace Swing Time 2017 Huntington Rose Society Food Drive This year we will have our seventh annual food drive as a community project. Food banks in our area need our help. We ask everyone who is able to bring 4 or more canned food items, pasta, cereal or other non-perishable items to the BANQUET. For each 4 items you will receive an extra door prize ticket. If you wish to donate 4

cash to purchase food items or wish to provide a check payable to the Huntington Rose Society, then we will give you a ticket for every $4 donated. The society will then donate these items to the Huntington City Mission and Central Christian Church for their Thanksgiving baskets. Betsy Ratcliff A longtime member of our society, Betsy Ratcliff passed away on October 22 nd at St. Mary s Medical Center. Betsy and Gil have sponsored picnics at their home when they lived in Huntington. Gil and Betsy sponsored rose trophies and were patrons of the rose society. They moved about 15 years ago to a farm in Proctorville where they had roses, vegetable gardens and bees. Betsy really enjoyed roses and many other perennials. Our thoughts go out to Gil and his family at this difficult time. If you want to send a card to Gil, his address is 1934 TWP Road 164, Proctorville, OH 45669. Thank you to our 2017 Patrons Queen Beverly Delidow Gary Rankin/Monica Valentovic King Cheryl and Mike Johnson Gil and Betsy Ratcliff Princess Fang Bai and Jiang Liu Phyllis McFadden Bill and Linda Owens Prince Bill and Oleta Dolen John and Diana Fleek Kathryn Moore Sandy White Thank you to our 2018 Patrons Queen Gary Rankin/Monica Valentovic Princess Phyllis McFadden Thank you to our Royal Contributors for 2017 and 2018 The Society would like to express a deep and sincere thank you to our members who have become Rose Patrons of our Society. Thought for the Month: Gardeners will be interested to know that the government says it is the soil that s overworked. Howard Walters, American Rose magazine, January, 2001. 5
