Safety Safety Warning Do not use the instrument for anything else than its intended purpose. Safety aspects of the 864 MTT The housing of the 864 MTT is intrinsically safe, certified by KEMA (Netherlands): II 1 G EEx ia II B T4, KEMA 01ATEX1212 X The environmental conditions for the 864 MTT are: operating pressure : max. 5 bar relative humidity : 0-100 % operating temperature : -20 C to 90 C; standard temperature range (Nylon) -55 C to 135 C; standard temperature range (Stainless steel) -55 C to 200 C; high temperature range (Stainless steel) -55 C to 250 C; very high temperature range (Stainless steel) -200 C to 70 C; very low temperature range (Stainless steel) Safety conventions Warnings, Cautions and Notes have been used throughout this installation guide to bring special matters to the immediate attention of the reader. A Warning concerns danger to the safety of the technician or user; A Caution draws the attention to an action which may damage the equipment; A Note points out a statement deserving more emphasis than the general text, but does not deserve a Warning or Caution. Safety Personal safety The technician must have basic technical skills to be able to safely install the equipment. When the 864 MTT is installed in a hazardous area, the technician must work in accordance with the (local) requirements for electrical equipment in hazardous areas. Warning In hazardous areas it is compulsory to use personal protection and safety gear such as: hard hat, fire-resistive overall, safety shoes, safety glasses and working gloves. Avoid possible generation of static electricity. Use non-sparking tools and explosion-proof testers. Do not rub the surface of the 864 MTT with a cloth to avoid the built-up of electro-static charges. These may cause sparks and explosions in hazardous areas, if a combustible gas mixture is present. Make sure no dangerous quantities of combustible gas mixtures are present in the working area. Never start working before the work permit is signed by all parties. Pay attention to the kind of product in the tank. If any danger for health, wear a gas mask and take all necessary precautions. Page 4 Installation guide 864 MTT
Installation Installation Installation conditions The 864 MTT can be installed either in two ways: in a thermowell directly in the tank (with anchor weight) Installation in a vertical thermowell Minimal, a 1½" thermowell can be used; but we recommend to use a 2" thermowell. The thermowell flange must be provided with a G ½ threaded opening. The thermowell can be provided with holes, or it can be closed. For open thermowells it must be checked, whether the outer sheathing material of the 864 MTT is resistant against the product. In general, we recommend the use of closed thermowells. Closed thermowells can be filled with oil for a better heat transfer between the stored product and the 864 MTT. Normal transformer oil can be applied for this purpose. Note: We do not recommend to use oil filled thermowells in tanks with heated products. Due to the heating at the lower end, the oil will circulate in the well which results in a temperature mismatch. With oil filled thermowells, take care that oil can expand when heated, without creating an over pressure. Use expansion pipe or vent opening under flange (refer to figure 1), or other suitable method. Figure 1 Vent opening and expansion pipe Caution Water ingression must be prevented in the thermowell. When freezing, water becomes ice, which can damage the 864 MTT. Installation guide 864 MTT Page 5
Installation Installing the 864 MTT in a thermowell Refer to figure 2. Before starting the installation of the 864 MTT, use a measuring tape to check the depth of the thermowell. The overall length of the 864 MTT must be within +200 mm (+8") and -100 mm (-4") from the measured depth. Take care that the leads are not damaged or twisted. Slowly unroll the 864 MTT while feeding it into the thermowell. Do not bend the 864 MTT further than it was in its packing. Place a G ½ nut (2) on the MTT extension tube (1) when the flange (3) is not provided with a screw thread. This nut is not included with the 864 MTT. Screw the flange (3) on the 864 MTT and adjust the inside length of the 864 MTT. Apply some acid free grease or Teflon tape at the location of the flange on the 864 MTT extension tube. Secure the flange on top of the thermowell with bolts and nuts. Place lock washer (4) over MTT extension tube and fasten G ½ locknut (5) on flange. Place 864 MTT indication plate (6) over locknut and secure it with a second G ½ nut (7). Figure 2 Installing 864 MTT Page 6 Installation guide 864 MTT
Installation Installation directly in the tank, suspended from roof nozzle This is only suitable with tanks at a low pressure (max. 0.5 bar vapour pressure). It must be checked, whether the outer sheathing material of the 864 MTT is resistant against the stored product. Warning Only install the 864 MTT with Nylon outer sheathing on products which cannot built-up an electro-static charge. The 864 MTT has a lug at the lower end to which an anchor weight can be attached. The installation requires a suitable flange, provided with an G ½ threaded opening (refer to fig. 3). Caution When an anchor weight is attached, the maximum static load is: 23 kg (50 lbs) for Stainless Steel version 13 kg (30 lbs) for Nylon version Refer to figure 2. Attach the anchor weight to the 864 MTT lug. Take care that the leads are not Figure 3 Anchor weights damaged or twisted. Slowly unroll the 864 MTT while lowering it through the roof nozzle. Do not bend the 864 MTT further than it was in its packing. Place a G ½ nut (2) on the MTT extension tube (1) when the flange (3) is not provided with a screw thread. This nut is not included with the 864 MTT. Screw the flange (3) on the 864 MTT and adjust the suspended length of the 864 MTT. Apply some acid free grease or Teflon tape at the location of the flange on the extension tube of the 864 MTT. Secure the flange on top of the roof nozzle with bolts and nuts. Place lock washer (4) over MTT extension tube and fasten G ½ locknut (5) on flange. Place 864 MTT indication plate (6) over locknut and secure it with a second G ½ nut (7). Installation Zone 0 adapter Caution For zone 0 applications only: The 864 MTT has been approved by PTB for zone 0 applications. When the German zone 0 requirements are applicable and the 864 MTT is directly installed in the zone 0 (no closed thermowell), then a zone 0 adapter must be installed on top of the 864 MTT. For Germany only. Refer to figure 4. Place G ½ nut (1) and toothed lock washer (2) on 864 MTT extension tube. Remove carefully the braided plastic insulation from the flying leads, starting within 1 cm from the end of the extension tube. Disassemble the zone 0 adapter. Screw part (3) on the 864 MTT extension tube. Lock with nut (1). Feed the MTT wiring through the rubber (6). Slide rubber in position. Place plastic gland (5). Turn part (7) in place and fix locking screw (4). The 762 VITO Interface will be installed directly on top of the zone 0 adapter (refer to installation guide 762 VITO Interface and 764 / 765 / 766 VITO temperature and/or water bottom probes).
